Sportsman’s Campground Introduce
For local users in the Janesville, Minnesota, area and those seeking "camping near me," Sportsman’s Campground, located at 40050 30th St, Janesville, MN 56048, USA, is an option that warrants careful consideration based on recent customer reviews. While the name might evoke images of a well-equipped outdoor retreat, feedback suggests significant shortcomings that potential visitors should be aware of before making a reservation. The campground can be contacted at (507) 234-5440 or mobile at +1 507-234-5440.
The environment surrounding Sportsman’s Campground, based on one reviewer's experience, includes the presence of a nearby pig farm, which emitted a "strong smell" that was described as "quite overwhelming." This is a critical environmental factor that could significantly impact the comfort and enjoyment of any stay at the campground. Odor issues from nearby agricultural operations can detract from the natural camping experience and are important for prospective campers to consider, especially those sensitive to such smells.
In terms of features and services, the reviews highlight several areas of concern. One of the primary disappointments for a reviewer hoping for an alternative to a campground near Maddison Lake was the complete "no lake access" at Sportsman’s Campground. For those seeking a lakeside camping experience as part of their "camping near me" search, this lack of access is a significant drawback.
Parking also appears to be a major limitation, with one reviewer noting "extremely limited parking." This could pose challenges for campers with multiple vehicles or larger setups, potentially leading to inconvenience and frustration upon arrival and during their stay.
The maintenance and upkeep of the campground facilities seem to be a significant issue, according to the feedback. The bathrooms and pool were described as "not well-maintained," raising concerns about cleanliness and functionality. Similarly, the kids' playground and basketball court were reported to be "in need of some attention," suggesting that recreational amenities might not be in optimal condition for use.
A long-time loyal camper reported a "significant decline in quality" under new ownership. This reviewer mentioned that the small campground now "lacks essential amenities," specifically pointing out "adequate drainage." The lack of proper drainage resulted in campsites becoming "flooded and unusable for a few days" even after slightly heavy rain, potentially leading to damage fees for uprooted grass. This suggests that the usability of campsites can be severely impacted by weather conditions due to infrastructure issues.
Furthermore, this long-term camper noted the cessation of activities that were previously offered, such as "movies, bingo, DJ party, and other activities every weekend." The disappearance of these social and recreational offerings could diminish the overall camping experience, especially for those seeking a more engaging campground atmosphere.
Adding to the negative feedback, the long-term camper also reported that "the staff's attitude has become unaccommodating and inhospitable." Poor staff interaction can significantly detract from a guest's experience, making them feel unwelcome and unsupported during their stay.
Based on the overwhelmingly negative reviews, it is challenging to infer positive services or features. However, we can attempt to list what might typically be expected from a campground, while noting the reported deficiencies:
- Campsites: Presumably available for tents and RVs, but the drainage issues raise concerns about their usability after rain.
- Restrooms and Showers: Reported as "not well-maintained."
- Pool: Also reported as "not well-maintained." Its operational status and cleanliness are questionable.
- Kids' Playground: "Seemed to be in need of some attention."
- Basketball Court: Also "seemed to be in need of some attention."
- Parking: "Extremely limited."
- Potential Hookups: Not specifically mentioned, but likely available at some RV sites. The quality and functionality of these hookups are unknown.
- Waste Disposal: Presumably available, but one reviewer noted large items near trash cans, suggesting potential issues with site cleanliness or management.
Given the strong negative feedback regarding the overall quality and maintenance of Sportsman’s Campground, it is highly unlikely that there are any current promotional offers that would outweigh the reported issues. Local users considering this campground for their "camping near me" search should be extremely cautious and perhaps seek alternative options in the Janesville or surrounding areas.
It is important for local users to be aware of the significant concerns raised by recent visitors to Sportsman’s Campground. The lack of lake access, severe parking limitations, poorly maintained facilities (bathrooms, pool, playground, basketball court), issues with drainage leading to flooded campsites, the cessation of previously offered activities, and a potentially unwelcoming staff attitude all point to a campground that may not provide a satisfactory camping experience. The strong odor from a nearby pig farm is an additional environmental factor that could be a major deterrent for many.
Before considering Sportsman’s Campground, local users are strongly advised to seek more current information, possibly from other online review platforms or by directly contacting the campground to inquire about the specific issues raised in the recent feedback. It would be prudent to ask about any recent improvements or planned renovations to address the maintenance concerns and whether the odor from the pig farm is a persistent issue. However, based solely on the provided reviews, Sportsman’s Campground appears to fall significantly short of expectations for a pleasant and comfortable "camping near me" experience.
In conclusion, while Sportsman’s Campground in Janesville, MN, might be geographically convenient for some local users, the overwhelming negative feedback regarding the lack of lake access, extremely limited parking, poorly maintained facilities, the absence of previously offered amenities and activities, a potentially unwelcoming staff, and a strong odor from a nearby pig farm paint a concerning picture. Local users are urged to proceed with extreme caution and thoroughly investigate the current conditions before considering a stay at this campground.

Sportsman’s Campground Reviews
I had high hopes for this campground as an alternative to the one near Maddison Lake, but I was very disappointed. Unfortunately, there was no lake access, extremely limited parking, and the bathrooms and pool were not well-maintained. The kids' playground and basketball court seemed to be in need of some attention as well. And finally, the strong smell from the nearby pig farm was quite overwhelming 🤢🤢🤢. Overall, I would recommend addressing these issues to improve the overall experience for visitors."
Oct 07, 2024 · James RotertThis campground has significantly declined in quality under new ownership. We've been loyal campers here for years, but the recent changes have been disappointing. Although small, the campground lacks essential amenities. (adequate drainage - meaning even slightly heavy rain leaves the campsites flooded and unusable for a few days if you don't want a damage fee for uprooted grass. What used to be movies, bingo, DJ party, and other activities every weekend quickly stopped. Unfortunately, the staff's attitude has become unaccommodating and inhospitable. It's disheartening to witness a once-excellent campground deteriorate so rapidly.
Oct 06, 2024 · Maddie SchneiderUsed to be a fun place but now just trashy since the new owners. We’ve been camping here for a couple years and with the new owners things went downhill very quickly.Tiny campground with very little amenities.Staff is extremely rude and unwelcoming. Sad to see what was a great campground turn awful so quickly.
Oct 06, 2024 · Sarah FergusonReply to the ownerYou (the owner) helped pull our camper out of a completely unusable site. You simply had to lay dirt and rocks after the floodingDo you control allowing your friends to use our site so they “can be closer their friends?” ILLEGAL!!!The quality of this campground has markedly declined since its change in ownership. As long-time campers, we have observed several disappointing modifications. The campground's limited size is compounded by a lack of basic amenities, such as sufficient drainage, which renders campsites unusable following moderate rain and risks incurring damage fees for grass disruption if you need to move your camper for any reason during this. The abrupt stop of weekend activities, formerly including movies, bingo, and DJ parties, has also detracted from the experience. Sadly, the staff's demeanor has become uninviting and uncooperative, souring the campground's from its once joy filled.
Oct 06, 2024 · Natalie ChristiansonGreat little family run campground! When our Original reservation at land of memories was canceled due to flooding, this little campground fit us in to their group site with just two of us. The swimming pool was a very nice and had a lifeguard during the day. The bathrooms and showers were clean anytime that we entered them. The front desk staff was very helpful and kind. I would definitely recommend this campground if you are in the area.
