For inquiries or further information, you can reach them at (919) 560-4358 or +1 919-560-4358.
As a featured option in the category of "camping near me," Spruce Pine Campground caters to those seeking a convenient and affordable outdoor adventure. While it offers a more rustic experience compared to some larger campgrounds, its natural beauty and proximity to local attractions make it a worthwhile destination. Based on real customer feedback and publicly available information, let's delve into what Spruce Pine Campground has to offer.
Environment and Ambiance:
Spruce Pine Campground is described as a small and intimate setting, featuring six pull-through sites alongside a dedicated group camping area. The landscape boasts natural trails, including one that gracefully follows a stream adorned with several small waterfalls, offering picturesque opportunities for leisurely walks and nature observation. The presence of Spruce Pine Lodge on the property adds to the overall charm of the location. For families, a playground equipped with four swings is conveniently situated between the campground and the lodge, providing a space for children to enjoy.
A significant highlight of Spruce Pine Campground's location is its proximity to Lake Michie, which is just a short distance down the hill. For those interested in water activities, a quick trip across the highway bridge will lead you to a boat ramp and small boat rentals. Please note that public access to Lake Michie is seasonal, typically available from Friday to Monday between March 8th and November 11th.
Services and Amenities:
It's important for potential visitors to be aware that the individual campsites at Spruce Pine Campground offer basic amenities. Currently, the campground provides two vault toilets and a single water spigot for all campers. There is no on-site waste dump, with the nearest facility located at Falls Lake State Park. This suggests that campers should come prepared for a more self-sufficient camping experience regarding waste disposal.
For the group camping area, a review mentions a water connection available on the right before entering the site, which might be a valuable piece of information for larger groups planning an extended stay. The group site also features a wide open space suitable for various activities, level parking areas, designated level tent areas, a communal fire pit, and a secondary fire ring complemented by a small amphitheater located just north of the field. This makes the group campsite ideal for gatherings, events, or simply larger families wanting to camp together.
Regarding the toilet facilities in the group camping area, feedback indicates that the pit toilets were noted as being in need of repair. However, it was also mentioned that the city had placed a trash bag in the can prior to a reserved visit, suggesting some level of maintenance. It's advisable for groups using this area to come prepared with extra toilet paper, as these are non-flushable toilets.
Notably, Spruce Pine Campground operates without on-site attendants. This means that while you'll enjoy a more private and independent camping experience, it's crucial to adhere to the campground rules and be prepared for self-management. In the event of any overlap with other campers in a site, the city advises visitors to resolve the situation amongst themselves, which highlights the importance of clear communication and pre-planning.
Features and Activities:
The natural trails are a significant feature of Spruce Pine Campground, offering opportunities for hiking and exploring the local flora and fauna. The stream with its small waterfalls adds a touch of scenic beauty to these trails, making them perfect for nature walks. The proximity to Lake Michie expands the recreational possibilities, allowing for boating and potentially fishing during the open season.
The group campsite's small amphitheater suggests a unique feature that could be utilized for gatherings, storytelling, or simply enjoying the outdoors in a communal setting. The playground further enhances the campground's appeal to families with young children.
Promotional Information and Booking:
Spruce Pine Campground offers very affordable camping rates, especially for local residents. As of February 2019, the cost was $10 per night for Durham County residents and $12 per night for non-county residents. Given the value offered by its location and natural surroundings, these prices make it an attractive option for budget-conscious campers.
It is crucial to plan ahead if you wish to camp at Spruce Pine Campground, as reservations must be made at least 10 days in advance. For those looking to book the group campsite, it's recommended to make web reservations even further in advance, particularly during the popular spring and fall seasons (about a month ahead) and the summer months (potentially a few months ahead) to secure your preferred dates.
Summary for Local Users ("Camping Near Me"):
For those in the Durham area searching for "camping near me," Spruce Pine Campground presents a budget-friendly and naturally appealing option. Its small size ensures a quieter and more intimate camping experience. You can enjoy hiking along trails with small waterfalls, and during the season, take advantage of the nearby Lake Michie for boating. Families will appreciate the playground. While the amenities are basic (vault toilets, one water spigot, no on-site waste dump), the low cost and scenic location make it a worthwhile choice, especially for those comfortable with a more rustic camping style. Remember to book your site at least 10 days in advance, and even earlier for the group area, especially during peak seasons. Come and experience the natural charm of Spruce Pine Campground!

Feb 08, 2019 · Mark HaskellGROUP CAMPGROUND REVIEWTake note of the water connection on the right before entering the site. It's the only one we could find.A wide open space for your group, level parking, level tent areas, a fire pit and secondary fire ring with amphitheatre just north of the field.Pit toilets are in need of repair a decade overdue, but the city did place a trash bag in the can prior to our reserved overnight.I'd recommend a web reservation a month ahead in the spring and fall, a few months in the summer. No ranger, so if someone is in the space, the city asks you to work that out...🤔 We didn't have any issues in late fall.Overall for the very low price and location, this site is amazing. Again, pit toilets, not flushable. Bring your back up TP for a group.

Aug 15, 2017 · Nobody SpecialThe sites are small and will support one 6 man tent or maybe two one man tent. All tents must be on the pad. Sites are very close together.
Oct 08, 2018 · Maurice CauleyThis is an amazing place for a group camp out with a variety of different different campsites they are great for just going camping for the weekend with your family.
