The Environment: Exploring the Broken Bow Area
Broken Bow is known for its scenic beauty and opportunities for outdoor activities. Guests at Squirrels Refuge can expect to be situated within this broader environment, offering potential access to nearby attractions and natural landscapes. One review notes that there is "lots to do in the area," suggesting that the location provides access to regional points of interest. However, another review mentions a "new commercial area across the street," which impacted the enjoyment of the front porch, indicating that the immediate surroundings of the cabin might include commercial development. The back porch was noted as being nice, suggesting that some parts of the property offer a more pleasant outdoor experience.
Services and Amenities: Guest Experiences
Based on the provided customer reviews, the services and amenities at Squirrels Refuge have received mixed feedback:
- Air Conditioning: One guest mentioned that the "A/C was a bit noisy but everything worked," indicating the presence of air conditioning, though it might not operate quietly.
- Outdoor Spaces: The cabin features both a front and a back porch. The front porch's usability was affected by a nearby commercial area, while the back porch was considered nice.
- Cleanliness and Maintenance: Multiple reviews raise concerns about the cleanliness and maintenance of the cabin. Issues mentioned include significant mold in the bathroom (around the drain and on a wall, with potential rotting), a sinking bathroom floor, stained indoor rugs, and outdoor furniture covered in dirty linens.
One guest reported calling management about the mold issue and found them "not concerned," with the only offer being a refund and later, to "come over and spray bleach on everything," which the guest noted is not an effective solution for mold removal.
Features: Aspects of Squirrels Refuge
The features of Squirrels Refuge that can be gleaned from the reviews include:
- Multiple porches (front and back), offering outdoor seating areas.

However, the negative reviews highlight significant issues that potential guests should be aware of, such as potential mold problems, structural concerns (sinking floor), and cleanliness issues (stained rugs, dirty linens on outdoor furniture). The proximity to a main road and a row of storage containers was also mentioned as detracting from the "cozy cabin" feel.

Squirrels Refuge Reviews
We enjoyed our stay in the Squirrels Refuge cabin. Lots to do in the area. The A/C was a bit noisy but every thing worked.New commercial area across the street kept us away from the front porch but the back porch was nice.
Aug 20, 2021 · Ken HilvingThis place was the worst case of false advertising I’ve ever experienced. My goal with negative reviews is to be honest and hopefully the owners will take better responsibility, and that people who might stay here would be warned. When we arrived it seemed ok. Just ok at best. But then I went on the bathroom - so much mold. Around the drain, the left wall near the floor is rotting, and the bathroom floor is sinking in. In general the bathroom needs many repairs, as well as the entire cabin. (I live in a rustic mountain town year round and nobody would pay the money it costs to stay here for such poor quality). Mold toxicity is real and I have a family member who has had lifelong problems because of it.When we called to inquire if management was aware of this problem, they could not have been less concerned. They offered a refund, but apart from that, the customer “service” if you could call it that, was appalling. The outdoor furniture was covered in dirty linens, indoor rug had stains, the “cozy cabin” is next to a main road and a row of storage containers. I could go on and on. As a God loving woman I believe we have a responsibility to rake care of our things and take care of others and to do so honestly. I hope the people who run this place will honor peoples hard-earned money, trust, and health, and get this place fixed. BTW - washing things and spraying bleach does NOT get rid of mold so be aware of that. That’s all they offered, to come over and spray bleach on everything. This was just awful.
