The first-come, first-served policy is a significant service aspect, allowing for more flexibility in planning trips, especially for those who prefer not to make reservations or decide to camp on short notice. While specific amenities such as restrooms, showers, or hookups are not detailed, the overall positive sentiment and the description of "nice sites" imply that the essential services are adequate for a comfortable camping experience. The mention of "a couple of sites for large RVs" indicates that the campground can accommodate larger vehicles, making it an option for RV travelers as well as tent campers. However, it would be advisable to contact the campground directly for specific details on RV site amenities and size limitations.

The first-come, first-served policy provides flexibility for spontaneous camping trips. Its location "midway between the Twin Cities and Duluth" is a notable feature for those traveling between these two major Minnesota areas, offering a convenient and pleasant stopover. The beauty of the campground itself, repeatedly mentioned in the reviews, suggests a natural setting that enhances the camping experience. The ability to accommodate large RVs on at least some sites expands its appeal to a wider range of campers.

This strategic location makes it accessible for local residents in the surrounding areas as well as travelers. While one reviewer noted that "depending on conditions sometimes there's a lot of freeway noise," this seems to be the only potential drawback mentioned in otherwise positive reviews. The reviewer also suggests that if it weren't for this occasional noise, the campground might be even more popular. However, they still found it to be a "great spot," especially given the low occupancy during a typically busy holiday weekend (Labor Day), which they found to be "kind of nice." This suggests that even with potential proximity to a freeway, the beauty and spaciousness of the sites can still provide a worthwhile camping experience.
In conclusion, for local residents searching for "camping near me" in Willow River, MN, Willow River Campground appears to be an excellent choice. Its beautiful environment, large and private campsites, fair price, and flexible first-come, first-served policy are significant advantages. Its convenient location between the Twin Cities and Duluth also makes it easily accessible. While there is a mention of potential freeway noise under certain conditions, the overall positive feedback suggests that the beauty and quality of the campground outweigh this potential drawback for many visitors. If you are looking for an affordable and scenic camping option with spacious sites in the Willow River area, contacting Willow River Campground directly for any current pricing or additional information would be a worthwhile step in planning your next local camping adventure.

Willow River Campground Reviews
Felt like it's underrated. Beautiful campground with nice sites. The price is fair. And it's first come first serve.
Sep 16, 2024 · Clinton AkerReally beautiful campground with large private sites. Depending on conditions sometimes there's a lot of freeway noise. If it weren't for this I think the campground would be more popular. We are here on the Friday of Labor Day weekend and hardly anybody here which is kind of nice. Definitely a great spot Midway between the Twin Cities and Duluth if you need to pull off and camp. There are a couple of sites for large RVs. $17 a night to camp is pretty nice.
Sep 04, 2021 · Pam AStayed here on a Friday night in July on the way up to Duluth. Not super busy. Well spaced campsites in mostly pine forest. The reservoir is not super large, kayaked and paddle boarded. Only downside is that it is very close to I-35 and there is road noise most of the night, but it is a plus if you need somewhere close and convenient while traveling. Other than that, would be a 5-star.
Feb 09, 2017 · Grant SchoenOwners refused to give me a significant refund $1650) after I got tired of their abusive behavior to me. I did nothing to warrant it and they treated my guests in the same way. Campground offers really nothing and they had no real business..I found out why. They will try to con you out of money and now I have to take them to court . Do not trust them.
Oct 12, 2024 · Sharon DavernOn Friday Night Sep 15, 2023 my grandson and I arrived at sundown and found the gates shut and chained with a sign saying closed. Sign on highway in town of Willow River does not indicate closure. Had to drive in a mile to the entrance to find gates locked. Little detail available online. Some sources say nothing, some say temporarily closed, another says permanently closed. Can anyone shed further light on status of this self-service, no-frills campground which we've otherwise enjoyed in recent years?
