Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon

I remember going here when I was about 4 years old. There was a meandering little creek, man-made, of course. It was lined with cement, but it was slick. And you could slide down it, sort of. It was more like a scoot and float. The water came down from a water holding tank that was about 4 feet deep and the older kids were in there. There was no way in because the walls were too high to climb over for a four year old. That was 1966, folks. I can see that where the big kids pool was, there is now a finished pool or swimming pond - Andrew G

Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon Introduce

Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon, located at 4700 Crown Valley Rd, Acton, CA 93510, USA, is a substantial RV and camping resort renowned for its extensive facilities and capacity. You can contact them directly at (661) 269-1740 or +1 661-269-1740. As part of the Thousand Trails network, this resort caters primarily to RV enthusiasts but also offers tent sites and cabin rentals, making it a versatile option for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" in Southern California. The campground offers a blend of rustic charm and resort-style amenities, providing a comprehensive outdoor experience for families and individuals alike.

Environment: High Desert Charm with Mountain Views

Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon is nestled in the high desert foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, offering a unique blend of arid landscape and scenic mountain vistas. The environment is characterized by large open spaces, some areas with towering Cottonwood, Italian Stone Pine, Palm, and Elm trees providing shade, while other sections may be more exposed. The campground itself is vast, capable of holding a large number of guests and sites, giving a sense of spaciousness, though some areas may feel more crowded during peak seasons. Visitors often appreciate the quiet solitude and magnificent views and sunsets available from various sites, especially those backing up to a mountain view cliff in the higher parts of the park.

The area experiences a distinct high desert climate, with warm days and cool nights, and generally low humidity. While it can be very dry, the climate is often described as outstanding for outdoor activities. The natural surroundings lend themselves to observing local wildlife, and warnings about coyotes, mountain lions, hawks, owls, and rattlesnakes are sometimes present, reminding visitors of the wild nature of the area. A notable feature of the environment is the train track running beside the campground, used by both Metrolink and freight trains, which can be a source of noise, particularly in sections A, B, and K. This location also puts you in the heart of "movie ranch" country, where filming is a regular occurrence, adding an interesting local flavor.

Services and Amenities: Resort-Style Comforts and Practical Facilities

Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon is equipped with an impressive array of services and amenities designed to enhance the camping experience. The resort boasts multiple swimming pools, including a large family pool and a separate adult pool and spa, with the family pool often touted as "the largest in the west" and recently refurbished and open. These pools are central to recreational activities, surrounded by extensive picnic areas for relaxation and gathering. There are also hot tubs for guest use, though guests under 18 are not allowed in the hot tub.

For convenience, the campground offers laundry facilities, clean restrooms with showers (some heated for cold days), and a sanitary dump station for RVs. While Wi-Fi is available, it is primarily in public areas like the lodges and may not be reliable throughout the entire park; guests often report spotty cell service, though Starlink works well in certain spots. The park also provides LP gas (metered) for purchase. On-site, there's a Country Store or grocery/convenience store for essential supplies. For extended stays, the water at the campground is noted to be very hard, so a water softener is highly recommended for RVs.

Site availability and types vary. The park has a large number of sites (over 850), including those with full hookups (electric, water, sewer) and varying amp services (30/50 amp), although some older sections have reportedly faced electrical issues. The park has been undergoing upgrades and renovations, with a "New" area that is better maintained and tends to attract 50-amp RVs. Sites can be uneven and are typically dirt, gravel, or sand, with varying levels of shade. Unlike some campgrounds, Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon has moved to an allocation system for sites, meaning campers are assigned a spot rather than choosing their own, which can sometimes be a point of frustration for guests seeking specific locations or views.

Features and Activities: Abundance of Recreation for All Ages

Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon provides a wide range of features and activities to keep campers entertained. For sports enthusiasts, there are basketball courts, volleyball courts, tennis/pickleball courts, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, and mini-golf. An arcade/game room is available for indoor entertainment, appealing particularly to younger visitors. For outdoor exploration, there are hiking/biking trails and opportunities for mountain biking. The "meandering little creek" from the past, though now a finished pool or swimming pond, still evokes a sense of childhood fun and aquatic enjoyment.

The resort emphasizes family-friendly activities, with several playgrounds scattered throughout the property. The large family lodge often hosts various activities. The surrounding natural beauty offers opportunities for enjoying the landscape, unique views, and sunsets. For those interested in local attractions, Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, known for its distinctive rock formations and as a filming location for many TV shows and movies (including Star Trek), is a must-visit and is only about 25 minutes away. The area also boasts local Mexican restaurants, an Ace Hardware, and grocery stores in nearby Palmdale, about 25 minutes away, which offers major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Trader Joe's.

The resort is pet-friendly in RV sites and select cottages, welcoming dogs and cats for an additional fee per pet, per night. Standard pet policies apply, including registration, leash requirements, and cleanup responsibilities. Service animals are permitted in all areas without restrictions or fees.

Promotional Information and Membership Benefits

Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon is part of the larger Thousand Trails membership network, which offers a unique camping model. Members pay an annual fee for access to numerous campgrounds across various regions with no nightly fees, representing significant cost savings for frequent campers. Different membership tiers offer varying benefits, such as longer stay limits (up to 21 consecutive nights), extended advance reservation windows (from 60 to 180+ days), and "Park-to-Park" access, allowing travel between resorts without mandatory time out. Non-members can typically book stays at a nightly rate, which can be around $50 USD, but the membership is a key draw for many visitors.

For those without an RV, Thousand Trails also offers a "Cabin Pass" for glamping in unique rental accommodations, and specific rental units at Soledad Canyon, including cottages with full kitchens and private bathrooms, are available. Some of these rental units are also pet-friendly. The resort frequently offers promotional deals on memberships, such as discounts on the annual Camping Pass. Prospective members can schedule virtual consultations with membership specialists to explore the various options and benefits.

Despite some historical challenges related to site maintenance and electrical systems, recent reviews indicate ongoing improvements and efforts by Thousand Trails to upgrade the campground. Visitors are advised to check current conditions and reviews, especially regarding site availability (as it is now allocated rather than self-selected) and any ongoing renovation projects. The sheer size and array of amenities at Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon make it a popular destination for those seeking a comprehensive, family-oriented outdoor experience, particularly for RV travelers looking for a home base in Southern California.
