Upper Falls Backcountry Campground

S Mountain Park, Connelly Springs, NC 28612, USA

5.0
If arriving after hours, pick up a tag from visitor center and sign in. Parking is about a mile from the visitor center. There are two trails to get to the campsite (high shoals loop). We took the trail to the left as it follows the waterfall up. There are more stairs but the views are better. The trail is relatively flat before and after the climb up the stairs. The campground has two pit toilets and a creek for water access. There is also a picnic table and fire ring at each site. About 5 sites in total. I recommend the hike to chestnut knob while visiting - views shown in pictures above. - Sahil Deschenes

The environment surrounding Upper Falls Backcountry Campground is characterized by the rugged and scenic terrain of South Mountains State Park. As the name suggests, the campground is located near Upper Falls, implying proximity to waterfalls and potentially steep, mountainous terrain. One reviewer detailed a hike of approximately 7+ miles to the campsite via the High Shoals Loop trail, encountering a waterfall along the way. They noted that taking the left trail offered better views, albeit with more stairs, as it followed the waterfall upwards. This suggests that the journey to the campground itself is an integral part of the experience, offering opportunities for scenic views and immersion in the natural landscape. The presence of Jacob Fork creek, mentioned as a water crossing on one of the trails, indicates access to fresh water sources, a key feature for backcountry camping. While wildlife sightings may vary, the abundance of birdsong reported by one hiker highlights the rich biodiversity of the area. The overall environment is one of natural beauty, offering peace and solitude away from more developed areas.

As a backcountry campground, the services and features at Upper Falls are intentionally more basic, focusing on essential needs while minimizing impact on the natural environment. Reviews indicate the presence of two pit toilets (privies) at the campground, with one reviewer noting the potential availability of toilet paper and hand sanitizer. For water access, campers rely on the creek, emphasizing the need for water purification methods. Each of the approximately five to six campsites is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, providing basic infrastructure for cooking and enjoying meals. One significant feature mentioned is the presence of a bear locker, essential for safely storing food and scented items in bear country. The distance between campsites is noted as being good, contributing to a quiet and private camping experience. Registration is required prior to arrival, and for those arriving after hours, a tag needs to be picked up from the visitor center. Parking is located about a mile from the visitor center, from where campers hike in to the campground.

A primary feature of Upper Falls Backcountry Campground is its accessibility via hiking trails, offering a true backcountry experience. The High Shoals Loop trail is one route, with a choice between a left trail that follows the waterfall (more stairs, better views) and a right trail (potentially less scenic). Another option, referred to as the "back path" or the route following the sign to Upper Falls Campground, was described by one reviewer as a "horribly long and steep slog uphill" and not recommended. This highlights the importance of choosing the right trail based on fitness level and preference for scenery versus ease of ascent. The distance of the hike in is approximately 1 to 1.5 miles. A key feature is the proximity to natural attractions, including Upper Falls and the potential for hiking to Chestnut Knob for panoramic views, as recommended by one visitor. The limited number of campsites (around 5 or 6) contributes to the secluded and quiet atmosphere, making it ideal for those seeking solitude in nature. The requirement for pre-registration and check-in at the visitor center ensures that the park management is aware of who is in the backcountry, contributing to safety.
