Shinny Creek Backcountry Campground

Connelly Springs, NC 28612, USA

4.0
A near-glamping experience for a backcountry camp site. Nice creek side sites with fire rings, picnic tables, a food box, and trash cans. Site 4 is the most secluded but there were a number of potential widow makers that made me hesitant to hammock camp there. Sites 1 and 2 didn’t have great tree spacing as well as dead trees but would be doable. Site 3 was perfect. Beautiful spot. A little more foot traffic than you might expect since it’s so close to the parking area. - Alex Howard

The environment of Shinny Creek Backcountry Campground is characterized by its creekside location within the natural beauty of South Mountains State Park. Reviewers consistently mention the proximity of the campsites to Shinny Creek, suggesting a tranquil setting with the soothing sounds of flowing water. The presence of trees provides shade and contributes to the overall natural ambiance. One reviewer described the experience as "near-glamping for a backcountry camp site," indicating a pleasant blend of wilderness and comfort. While some campsites might have specific environmental considerations, such as potential "widow makers" (dead trees posing a falling hazard) at site 4, or less ideal tree spacing at sites 1 and 2 for hammock camping, the overall setting is described as beautiful, particularly site 3. The relatively short 1.5-mile hike to the campground makes it accessible for families with younger children, as noted by a reviewer who took their 8 and 10-year-old daughters backpacking. Despite its proximity to the parking area, once a short distance is covered on the trail, the campground offers a sense of seclusion away from the crowds, allowing campers to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.

Shinny Creek Backcountry Campground offers a range of services and features that enhance the backcountry camping experience. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, a picnic table, a food box (presumably for bear safety), and trash cans, which is a significant convenience for a backcountry site. The presence of an outhouse (privy) that was described as "not too bad" provides a basic but essential sanitation facility. One appreciated feature mentioned by a reviewer was the unexpected provision of kiln-dried wood at the site, although it's noted that this might not always be the case. The creek itself serves as a water source, though campers should be prepared to treat or filter water for drinking. The availability of designated campsites with these amenities contributes to a more organized and comfortable backcountry experience compared to dispersed camping. The fact that rangers were accommodating to campers arriving on a busy Sunday, allowing them to bypass entrance lines and providing reserved parking, indicates a level of service orientation.

A key feature of Shinny Creek Backcountry Campground is its accessibility via a 1.5-mile hiking trail, making it a reachable backcountry destination for a wider range of campers, including families. The trail is described as uphill but scenic and manageable for young children. The reward upon reaching the campground is the creekside setting of the individual sites. Site 4 is repeatedly mentioned as the most secluded and desirable, although some potential hazards related to dead trees were noted. Sites 1 and 2 might have less ideal tree spacing for certain types of camping setups. Site 3 was highlighted as "perfect." The good distance between the sites contributes to the quiet and private atmosphere that many backcountry campers seek. The availability of a food box at each site underscores the importance of bear safety in the area. The combination of a relatively easy access hike and well-equipped campsites makes Shinny Creek a unique "near-glamping" option within a backcountry setting.
