Washburn Equestrian Area Introduce
Looking for a unique "camping near me" experience in the Thonotosassa, Florida area? Consider the Washburn Equestrian Area, located at 14071 County Rd 579, Thonotosassa, FL 33592, USA. You can reach them at (352) 796-7211 ext. 4470 or +1 352-796-7211 ext. 4470 for inquiries and reservations. While primarily designed for equestrian activities, this area also offers camping opportunities and boasts a network of trails that appeal to hikers as well. Based on the available customer reviews, Washburn Equestrian Area provides a pleasant environment with some considerations for potential visitors.
The environment of Washburn Equestrian Area is characterized by its extensive network of trails, which are a significant draw for both horseback riders and hikers. The reviews mention "lots of trails," suggesting ample opportunities for exploring the natural surroundings. While the specific types of terrain or scenery are not detailed, the presence of an "equestrian area" implies open spaces, wooded paths suitable for horses, and potentially natural Florida landscapes. One reviewer notes that the area is "always pleasant," indicating an enjoyable outdoor setting. However, another reviewer mentions "a lot of road noise from the traffic that never stops," which could impact the tranquility of some campsites depending on their proximity to the road (County Rd 579). Despite this, the overall impression is of a natural area conducive to outdoor activities.
The services and features at Washburn Equestrian Area are somewhat unique, particularly regarding camping. One of the most notable aspects is that camping is described as "free," although this comes with certain conditions. The reviewer who mentioned the free camping also noted the presence of a portable toilet ("portable Jon") that is reportedly kept clean. However, they also pointed out the lack of "non portable water good enough to wash a dog in," suggesting that potable water or water suitable for washing may be limited or unavailable at the campsites. This is a crucial consideration for campers planning to stay overnight or for extended periods. It's important to note that, according to one review, reservations are required for camping, so it operates on a system that needs prior arrangement rather than being a first-come, first-served setup.
A key feature of Washburn Equestrian Area is its primary purpose as an equestrian facility, offering trails suitable for horseback riding. However, a significant point highlighted in the reviews is that "you don't have to have a horse" to enjoy the area. This makes it accessible to a broader range of outdoor enthusiasts, including hikers and those simply looking for a natural setting to camp in. The presence of clean portable toilets, despite the lack of readily available water for washing, indicates a basic level of provided facilities. The easy access mentioned by one reviewer is also a practical advantage for visitors.
Currently, the provided reviews do not contain any specific promotional information for Washburn Equestrian Area. The mention of "free" camping could be considered a significant benefit, but it's essential to understand any associated conditions or limitations, such as the lack of potable water or restrictions on the duration of stay. Local users interested in any further details about camping fees (if any apply beyond the "free" aspect), potential amenities for campers (beyond the portable toilet), or any specific rules and regulations for using the area would need to contact the phone number provided for more information.
For local users in the Thonotosassa area searching for "camping near me" that offers a different kind of outdoor experience, Washburn Equestrian Area presents an intriguing option. The combination of extensive trails for hiking and horseback riding in a pleasant environment is a major draw. The possibility of free camping (with the caveat of limited water and reliance on portable toilets) could be attractive to budget-conscious campers. However, the reported road noise might be a concern for those seeking complete tranquility. The requirement for reservations is also an important factor to keep in mind. The fact that you don't need a horse to enjoy the trails and the area broadens its appeal beyond just equestrian users.
In conclusion, Washburn Equestrian Area offers a unique "camping near me" opportunity in Thonotosassa, FL, primarily characterized by its pleasant trail system suitable for both horses and hikers. The availability of free camping is a significant feature, though potential visitors should be aware of the limited water situation and the reliance on portable toilets. The need to make reservations is also a key piece of information for planning a visit. While road noise might be a consideration for some, the overall accessibility and the availability of trails make Washburn Equestrian Area a worthwhile option for local outdoor enthusiasts, even those without horses, looking for a different kind of camping experience.

Nov 29, 2021 · J RYou have to reserve to camp.Always pleasant, lots of trails. You don't have to have a horse.
Jan 11, 2025 · Eve LentiI just stayed here the past 2 nights, and it was really nice. They pumped out the porta John yesterday, but it wasn't terrible before, so it's being maintained well. There is a bit of noise from the road, but otherwise it's quiet and peaceful. It looks like a few of the fire rings have walked away, which is unfortunate, but I counted 3. The one closest to the water doesn't have a grate on it, so keep that in mind. Definitely a great place to camp.Honestly, all of the SWFWMD sites I've stayed at have been nice. Don't expect amenities, pack it in pack it out.
Mar 23, 2023 · Vash AddamsOur family loves to come here for the day and get away. Thick Forrest trees canopy walk ways; shading you as you hike along the trails. We have seen a few people with their horses and there is enough room for all walks of life here.
