Western Lake Campground

Naselle, WA 98638, USA

4.0
Went to try out the fishing. Road up was steep but OK for most cars/trucks. Suggest NO motorhomes. Walk in tent spots. I camped in parking area with truck camper. Fishing from kayak is OK. Lake is shallow with limited shore access. It was mainly empty mid week. Boat launch is funky but doable for kayaks (see pics) - Sheldon Khougaz

Western Lake Campground Introduce

Are you looking for a peaceful escape into nature? Do you search for "camping near me" hoping to find a hidden gem where you can unwind and reconnect with the outdoors? Look no further than Western Lake Campground, nestled near the coast in the beautiful state of Washington. This tent-only campground offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a landscape characterized by lush forests and tranquil water bodies. If you're a local user seeking a serene camping experience, Western Lake Campground might just be the perfect destination you've been searching for.

Located north of Naselle, Washington, Western Lake Campground provides a more rustic and intimate camping experience with its five tent-only campsites. This setup caters specifically to those who appreciate the simplicity of tent camping and the quietude that often accompanies it. Imagine setting up your tent near the gentle lapping of the lake, surrounded by the sounds of nature – a true respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The Environment: A Blend of Forest and Water

The environment surrounding Western Lake Campground is a key attraction. Situated near the coast, it benefits from a climate that generally sees temperatures ranging from a mild 40°F in the winter to a comfortable 70°F in the summer. This makes it a pleasant destination for camping across different seasons. The presence of both forests and the lake creates a diverse ecosystem, offering opportunities for nature observation and a generally calming atmosphere. The short trail that loops around the lake invites leisurely strolls, allowing you to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Additionally, a connecting trail to nearby Snag Lake expands your exploration options, providing more scenic views and opportunities for gentle hikes.

Services and Facilities: Back to Basics

Western Lake Campground focuses on a more traditional camping experience, with basic yet essential services. You'll find pit toilets available for campers' convenience. Each of the five tent campsites is equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table, perfect for enjoying campfires under the stars and having outdoor meals. It's important to note that the campground does not offer electricity or a direct water hookup at the campsites, emphasizing a more self-sufficient camping approach. For water, the lake itself is a natural source, though it's always advisable to bring your own drinking water or a reliable water filtration system.

Given its tent-only nature, Western Lake Campground is not recommended for RVs. However, the parking area is generally flat and spacious enough to accommodate cars and smaller camper trailers, from which you can then easily access the walk-in campsites.

Features and Activities: Nature at Your Doorstep

The primary features of Western Lake Campground revolve around its natural setting. The lake itself offers opportunities for fishing, a popular activity among locals. It has even been reported that the lake has been recently stocked with trout, making it an appealing spot for anglers looking for a quiet place to cast their lines. The short walking trail around the lake and the connecting trail to Snag Lake are perfect for easy hikes and nature walks, allowing you to immerse yourself in the surrounding woodland and lakeside scenery.

For those looking to explore beyond the immediate campground, Western Lake Campground's location near the coast of Washington opens up access to other attractions. The Pacific Ocean beaches are within reach, offering opportunities for beachcombing, scenic walks along the shore, and enjoying the coastal environment. Additionally, the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge is nearby, a significant area for wildlife conservation and birdwatching, providing a chance to witness the region's diverse fauna and flora.

Promotional Information and Things to Know

Western Lake Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, as reservations are not currently available. There is a limit of 10 days for camping stays within a 365-day period, allowing more people to enjoy this natural space. It's also important to be aware that a Discover Pass is required to park and camp at Western Lake Campground. You can purchase a day pass or an annual pass online or at various retail locations.

Recent visitors have noted the generally peaceful atmosphere of the campground, with the sounds of frogs and distant waterfalls adding to the tranquility. While some past visitors mentioned minor cleanliness issues, more recent feedback suggests that the pit toilet is usually maintained. The road leading up to the campground is described as steep and somewhat bumpy with loose gravel, so it's advisable to drive with a vehicle that has a decent clearance, although 2WD vehicles have reportedly managed. Interestingly, despite its somewhat remote feel, some visitors have reported surprisingly good Verizon cell service at the campground.

For those interested in exploring more of the area, Western Lake Campground is situated on the way up to Radar Ridge and is also close to the 90,000-acre Yacolt Burn State Forest. This larger area offers extensive working forests managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, with various activities potentially available, although Western Lake itself is more focused on the lakeside and tent camping experience.
