Wildwood Campground Introduce
For local users searching for 'camping near me' in the Ellsworth, Illinois area, Wildwood Campground, located at 28773 E 900 North Rd, Ellsworth, IL 61737, USA, presents a location with a mix of reported positive and negative attributes. You can reach them at (309) 724-8342 or +1 309-724-8342 for inquiries. Based on the available customer reviews, Wildwood Campground is described as dog-friendly and quiet, with friendly people. However, significant concerns have been raised regarding the condition of the restrooms and showers, as well as serious issues with the electrical system.
Environment and Location:
The address places Wildwood Campground in a rural area near Ellsworth, Illinois, which is located in McLean County. This suggests a setting characterized by the typical landscapes of central Illinois, likely including open fields, some wooded areas, and a generally quiet environment away from major urban centers. The review noting that the campground is "really quiet" supports this expectation of a peaceful setting, which can be a significant draw for campers looking to escape noise and enjoy a more natural ambiance.
The dog-friendly aspect mentioned in one review indicates that the campground welcomes pets, which is a crucial factor for many camping enthusiasts who travel with their canine companions. This suggests that there might be designated areas for pets or general policies in place to accommodate them, although specific details are not provided.
The presence of a "small play area" suggests that the campground caters to families with young children, offering a dedicated space for kids to play. However, the size being described as "small" implies that the play area might be limited in scope.
Further information about the specific natural features of the campground, such as the presence of trees, lakes, or trails, is not available in the provided reviews. Local users might need to seek additional details from other sources or potentially visit the campground to assess the environment firsthand.
Services and Amenities:
The reviews provide limited and somewhat conflicting information about the services and amenities at Wildwood Campground. One reviewer mentions that the "restrooms and showers need major update," indicating that these facilities are present but are in poor condition and require significant renovation. This is a critical factor for many campers, as clean and functional restrooms and showers are often considered essential amenities.
On a more positive note, the campground is reported to be "dog friendly" and includes a "small play area," suggesting that it offers some basic amenities catering to specific needs, such as those traveling with pets or young children.
However, the most concerning feedback revolves around the electrical system. One reviewer strongly advises against risking their camper due to "completely junk" electricity. They report that most sites are equipped with 20 amp service but have 30 amp plugs, and there is no 50 amp service available. Alarmingly, the reviewer states that they experienced multiple electrical meter burnouts at their sites and witnessed a third one burning while present. They go so far as to suggest that the entire place is not up to code and should be reported. These are serious allegations that raise significant safety concerns for potential campers, particularly those with RVs or campers requiring reliable electrical connections.
The positive comment that "everyone seems friendly" suggests a welcoming social atmosphere among the campers and potentially the staff. While this is a valuable aspect of the camping experience, it may not outweigh significant issues with essential facilities like restrooms, showers, and, most critically, the electrical system.
Based on the available reviews, Wildwood Campground appears to offer the following services and amenities, with significant caveats:
- Restrooms (in need of major update).
- Showers (in need of major update).
- Dog-friendly policies.
- Small play area.
- Electricity at campsites (primarily 20 amp with 30 amp plugs, reported to be unreliable and potentially unsafe).
Information regarding other common campground amenities such as water hookups, sewer hookups, fire pits, picnic tables, trash disposal, or recreational facilities is not provided in the reviews.
Features and Considerations:
The primary feature of Wildwood Campground appears to be its quiet environment, which is appreciated by at least one reviewer. This could be a significant draw for those seeking a peaceful and relaxing camping experience away from busier locations.
The dog-friendly policy is another notable feature, making it a viable option for pet owners in the Ellsworth area looking for a local camping spot where their dogs are welcome.
However, the serious concerns raised about the electrical system are a major consideration that potential campers must take into account. The reported issues of incorrect amperage, faulty meters, and potential code violations pose a risk to campers' equipment and safety. Until these issues are addressed and resolved, using the electrical hookups at Wildwood Campground may not be advisable.
The need for major updates to the restrooms and showers is another significant drawback. Poorly maintained facilities can detract from the overall camping experience and may be a deterrent for campers who prioritize hygiene and comfort.
The friendly atmosphere reported by one reviewer is a positive aspect, suggesting a welcoming community within the campground. However, this positive social element may not compensate for the potentially unsafe and inadequate infrastructure.
Local users considering Wildwood Campground should weigh the appeal of a quiet, dog-friendly environment against the significant concerns regarding the electrical system and the condition of the restrooms and showers. It would be prudent to seek more recent information or clarification from the campground management regarding these issues before making a reservation.
Promotional Information and Local Context:
Given the serious negative feedback regarding the electrical system and the outdated facilities, promoting Wildwood Campground to local users requires a cautious approach. Any promotional efforts should be honest and transparent about the current state of the campground while highlighting its positive aspects.
Potential positive points to emphasize could include:
- Quiet Location: Market the campground as a peaceful retreat for those seeking tranquility.
- Dog-Friendly Environment: Attract pet owners by highlighting the welcoming policies for dogs.
- Friendly Community: Mention the reported friendly atmosphere among campers.
- Small Play Area: Appeal to families with young children by noting the presence of a play area.
However, it would be unethical and irresponsible to promote the electrical hookups without explicitly addressing the reported issues. If the management has taken steps to rectify these problems, promotional materials should clearly state the improvements made and any relevant certifications or inspections.
Similarly, if renovations to the restrooms and showers are planned or underway, this should be communicated to potential visitors to manage expectations and show that the campground is addressing the need for updates.
Given the negative reviews, it might be wise for the campground to focus on attracting local campers who are primarily interested in the quiet environment and dog-friendly policies and who may be less reliant on the electrical hookups or willing to use the existing facilities with the understanding that they are in need of updates.
Local users in the Ellsworth area searching for 'camping near me' should be aware of the mixed feedback regarding Wildwood Campground. While the quiet atmosphere and dog-friendly policies may be appealing, the reported significant issues with the electrical system and the need for updates to the restrooms and showers are serious concerns that should be carefully considered. It is recommended to contact the campground directly to inquire about the current status of these issues and to read more recent reviews before making a decision to stay at Wildwood Campground.

Wildwood Campground Reviews
Restrooms and showers need major update. Dog friendly, and small play area. Everyone seems friendly.
May 31, 2023 · Jaynie ComptonWouldn't waste my time, or risk my camper again. The electricity is completely junk. First most of the sites are 20 amps with 30 amp plugs no 50 amp service. I had two sites and burned up both meters, a third one burnt while i was there. Someone needs to report them the whole place isnt up to code.On the other side of things it is really quiet, and most of the people are really nice.

Jun 06, 2020 · Frank HermansenTucked away and private, it's a nice park. Mostly regulars that are extremely neighborly and helpful if you have any problems. When we stayed it was $15 a night. 30 amp service (not sure about 50 amp), and water. Not a lot to do, but relax. Great place to park for a few nights and meet people. Many have group campfires, and you can just grab a chair, and join in!We pulled in last weekend, and I had a problem with my power distribution box. Within 15 minutes of asking someone for help, I had 4-6 people looking at it, and giving me advice how to repair it. Very friendly bunch. Happy to share advice and new ideas with other RV'ers.Great Verizon and AT&T service. Not really good Sprint. 3-4 local digital channels received, but we were there for the conversations, not the TV.My only neg comments, After it rains, the ground gets a little soggy, and the guest spaces are on grass. The dump station is free, but difficult for larger RV's to get to as it's way in the back. There is a very nice dump station at Love's a few miles away for only $5. Outside of that, I highly recommend this little getaway.
Jun 05, 2014 · Lewis ShepherdGross. Tent camping area was amid the acorns and mud. Picnic tables are in disrepair. We tent camped and there was one fire pit for all the tent camp sites, we were the only one there however and I can see why. Playground was dangerous and covered with spider webs, equipment falling apart. Bathroom was so rusty and disgusting I wouldn't even use it. And I have been in some pretty rustic places this is the worst. Get a tetanus shot if you plan to camp here
