WINDY PASS CABIN

Portal Creek Road and Windy Pass Trail, Bozeman, MT 59718, USA

5.0
Windy Pass Cabin is a neat forest cabin amongst the meadows of Windy Pass. A 2.5 mile hike from Upper Portal Trailhead, this cabin kept me and my dad dry over a rainy night. Because of the rain, I can’t attest to the views (I hear they are stunning), but keeping warm to a wood fire while listening to the rain was a charming experience. The cabin is fairly large, with one large room and a loft. The main room contains a wood stove, a cabinet with cookware (pots, skillet, plates, silverware, etc.), a table with four chairs and a set of bunks. The loft is accessed by a ladder and has two cots overlooking the main room. The outhouse is due west by a few hundred feet behind some trees (exit the porch and go straight). There is no woodpile, so expect to spend a good amount of time refilling the wood bin. Good saws and a slightly dull splitter are provided. - Ryan Schaefer

WINDY PASS CABIN presents a different kind of "camping near me" – one that involves a bit of a journey to reach a secluded haven. Located 2.5 miles from the Upper Portal Trailhead, this cabin offers a backcountry escape for those willing to hike in. The Bozeman area of Montana is renowned for its stunning mountain scenery, vast forests, and opportunities for hiking and other outdoor adventures. Staying at WINDY PASS CABIN provides a chance to deeply connect with this environment, offering a more private and rustic experience compared to traditional campgrounds.

Environment and Location:

WINDY PASS CABIN is nestled "amongst the meadows of Windy Pass," suggesting a picturesque setting surrounded by open fields in a mountain environment. The fact that it's a 2.5-mile hike from the Upper Portal Trailhead emphasizes its remote location within the forest. One reviewer mentioned the potential for "stunning" views, although their visit was during a rainy night, preventing them from fully experiencing them. The elevation of Windy Pass likely contributes to cooler temperatures and a distinct mountain ecosystem.

The surrounding environment would likely feature forests, possibly with hiking trails extending beyond the cabin. The meadows suggest open areas that could offer wildlife viewing opportunities. The remoteness implies a quieter and more secluded experience, away from the noise and crowds of more accessible campgrounds. The journey to the cabin itself, a 2.5-mile hike, becomes an integral part of the experience, offering a sense of accomplishment upon arrival and immersion in the natural surroundings.

The mention of Portal Creek Road and Windy Pass Trail indicates the general area and the access route. Potential visitors should be prepared for hiking, possibly on varied terrain, to reach the cabin. The specific elevation gain and trail conditions would be important factors to consider when planning a trip.
