#2 Honeymoon Flat Campground 5/16 -5/18 Introduce
Honeymoon Flat Campground, located at 9946 Twin Lakes Rd, Bridgeport, CA 93517, USA, is a highly-regarded destination for campers seeking a tranquil and clean mountain retreat in the Eastern Sierra. For those searching on platforms like 'Camping Near Me' for a serene and uncrowded experience, Honeymoon Flat offers a peaceful haven with excellent access to nature's beauty and recreational activities.
Honeymoon Flat Campground is nestled at an elevation of approximately 7,000 to 7,100 feet, within the stunning Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The campground is situated alongside Robinson Creek, a picturesque waterway that provides the soothing sound of "constant burbling" and excellent fishing opportunities. The natural setting is characterized by a mix of tall Jeffrey and lodgepole pines, along with aspens. The west side (lower loop) of the campground is partially shaded by these trees, while the east loop is more open, with fewer pines but dotted with sagebrush, grasses, and vibrant summer wildflowers.
The location is considered ideal for its balance of accessibility and immersion in nature. It is approximately 8 miles west of the charming town of Bridgeport via Twin Lakes Road. While the road is paved, it leads to a secluded environment that feels far removed from urban hustle. This proximity to Bridgeport means campers can easily access supplies and other services if needed, being just 8 miles away. Additionally, the Twin Lakes area, a hub for boating, fishing, and hiking, is only about 2 miles from the campground, offering convenient access to a wide array of outdoor activities.
Visitors consistently praise the beauty of the area, especially in the fall when the aspen trees transform the landscape into a riot of bright yellow, creating a truly "gorgeous" and "spellbinding" sight. The presence of deer "hanging out near our tent" adds to the immersive wildlife experience, emphasizing the natural integrity of the campground.
The typical operational season for Honeymoon Flat Campground runs from around late April or mid-May through October. During these months, the weather is generally favorable for camping, with warm days and cool evenings. Visitors should be prepared for varying mountain weather, as conditions can change rapidly.
Honeymoon Flat Campground, which is managed by Westrek and is part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, provides essential amenities to ensure a comfortable and safe camping experience. Reviews consistently highlight the cleanliness and peacefulness of the site:
- Campsites: The campground offers a limited number of sites, typically around 20 to 28, which contributes to its uncrowded and peaceful atmosphere. It is divided into two loops: a lower (south) loop (sites 1-13) and an upper (north) loop (sites 14-28). Sites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, with a maximum RV length generally up to 45 feet, although some sources state 25 sites with 45 ft max RV length. Some sites are "tent-only walk-in" while others are "standard nonelectric." Each campsite includes a "fairly spread out" "even, gravel square area for tents," a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and a crucial bear-proof food storage locker (bear box). These bear boxes are "nice" and "provided" for storing "all our food and scented items there," which is essential given the presence of bears in the area.
- Restrooms: The campground provides vault toilets, which are consistently described as "really clean and well stocked" by visitors. While not flush toilets, their cleanliness and maintenance are a significant positive feature.
- Potable Water: Drinking water is available at the campground, accessible via spigots, which is a convenient amenity for campers.
- Camp Host: A standout feature, as noted by multiple reviews, is the "sweet and very knowledgeable" and "very friendly" camp host. They are praised for keeping the campsite clean and for providing helpful recommendations about the area, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
- No Hookups: Honeymoon Flat Campground is a non-electric campground, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups for RVs or trailers. Campers need to be self-sufficient regarding these utilities.
- No Cell Service/Wi-Fi: Similar to many remote Sierra campgrounds, cell service is generally unavailable or extremely limited at Honeymoon Flat. There is also no Wi-Fi directly at the campground. This encourages a genuine disconnection from technology and a focus on nature.
- Campfire Permits: As with all national forest campgrounds in California, a free California Camp Fire Permit is required for any open flame (campfire, barbecue, or portable stove).
The very name "Honeymoon Flat" evokes a sense of charm and tranquility, and the reviews confirm this experience. It's a place where visitors have "such a great time," finding it "very peaceful" and planning "definitely plan on coming back." Its limited spaces are a key promotional point, ensuring it "doesn't get over crowded," which is a significant advantage for those seeking solitude.
Fishing: The campground's location directly on Robinson Creek makes it a prime spot for trout fishing. The creek is known for "good rainbow trout fishing" and is easily accessible from both loops of the campground. Additionally, Upper and Lower Twin Lakes are just 2 miles away, offering excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow and brown trout, and Kokanee salmon, as well as boating, canoeing, and kayaking.
Hiking and Wildlife Viewing: The surrounding Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest offers numerous hiking trails, including the popular Robinson Creek Trail, providing access to the "rugged and scenic Hoover Wilderness Area." This allows for exploration of alpine landscapes and breathtaking views. The frequent presence of deer "hanging out near our tent" and the awareness of bears (hence the bear boxes) underscore the immersive wildlife experience that campers can enjoy responsibly.
Disconnect and Recharge: The lack of cell service promotes a true escape from daily distractions, allowing campers to fully "disconnect" and "recharge" amidst nature. This "white noise" of the creek and the quiet environment contribute to a "great night of sleep" and a deeply relaxing stay.
Cleanliness and Welcoming Atmosphere: The consistent praise for the cleanliness of the campsites and restrooms, combined with the friendly and knowledgeable camp host, creates a very welcoming and comfortable environment, even in a primitive setting. This attention to detail significantly enhances the overall camping experience.
Honeymoon Flat Campground is a truly cherished spot for those who seek a genuine, peaceful, and clean camping experience in the heart of the Eastern Sierra. Its combination of beautiful natural surroundings, direct access to excellent fishing and hiking, essential amenities, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for individuals, couples, and families looking for a memorable outdoor adventure. For anyone searching 'Camping Near Me' who values serenity and natural beauty, Honeymoon Flat Campground promises a rewarding escape.

Had such a great time at Honeymoon Flat (lower loop). The host was so sweet and very knowledgeable of the area. The campsite was clean and very peaceful. The restrooms are also really clean and well stocked. Definitely plan on coming back. It's a peaceful camp site with limited spaces so it doesn't get over crowded. We had a few deer hanging out near our tent which was cool. There's bears in the area so the provided bear box was nice. We stored all our food and scented items there.
Aug 24, 2024 · Chelsea IosuaThis is a really nice campground although not a lot of sites. The camp spots are fairly spread out and some of them have a great view. Vault toilets, fire rings, and bear boxes are provided. There is an even, gravel square are for tents. The campground host is very friendly!
Jun 27, 2022 · Suzanne MiladinEach campsite was clean and large. Flat parking for RVs/vans and a platform for a tent. Lower Honeymoon Flat was right off the road but not too noisy. I believe it had 5 sites, and one was a double site with two parking spaces. Water spigot and put toilets. $20 a night. Quick access to Twin Lakes! Open for the beginning half of October.
Oct 11, 2020 · Casey VinkeSuch a beautiful campground. Perfect for stargazing as well. Fresh well drinkable water. The creek was so peaceful and full of water and the camp host is super nice. Highly recommend. We stayed here as we visited yosemite.
May 31, 2022 · Farida AlamiLower Honeymoon Flats has a creek that runs directly behind it. Every camping spot there is only steps away from the creek. The bathrooms were maintained very well. And the each site had plenty of room and shade. Except for sites 12 and 13, these two had NO shade.
