CRAGS CAMPGROUND Introduce
Crags Campground, located in Bridgeport, CA 93517, is a popular and often praised destination for campers seeking a serene and less crowded experience in the stunning Eastern Sierra. For those searching on platforms like 'Camping Near Me,' Crags Campground presents an excellent choice for a genuine mountain escape, offering a blend of rugged natural beauty and convenient access to local attractions.
Crags Campground is nestled at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, offering a high-altitude camping experience with breathtaking views of the rugged Sawtooth Ridge, with peaks towering over 10,500 feet. The campground itself is characterized by a mix of mature Jeffrey pines, which provide partial shade, and areas with more open space and sagebrush. This provides a balance, allowing campers to choose between shaded or sunnier spots, depending on their preference.
The campground's location is particularly appealing due to its close proximity to both Robinson Creek and the Twin Lakes (Upper and Lower Twin Lakes). Robinson Creek runs along the campground, providing the soothing sound of flowing water and direct access for fishing. Lower Twin Lake is a short walk away (a minute drive from a nearby store by the lake, implying a very short walk), offering beautiful mirrored landscapes, especially in the fall when the aspen trees turn a vibrant yellow, creating a truly picturesque scene.
Access to Crags Campground is via Twin Lakes Road, about 10 miles from the town of Bridgeport. This road leads to the Twin Lakes area, a renowned hub for outdoor activities. Despite its popularity, Crags is noted for being less crowded than some other campgrounds in the vicinity, even on holiday weekends, making it an ideal spot for those who "hate crowds." The peaceful atmosphere allows campers to feel "not on top of your camp neighbor," ensuring a sense of privacy and tranquility.
The operational season typically runs from late spring through early fall, depending on weather and snow conditions. Summers offer pleasant temperatures for outdoor activities, while the fall brings spectacular foliage that attracts photographers and nature enthusiasts. The rugged mountain environment means temperatures can vary, with cool nights even in summer, so being prepared for changing conditions is essential.
Crags Campground provides essential amenities designed to support a comfortable and authentic camping experience in the wilderness. It is generally considered a primitive campground, with a focus on appreciating nature, but offers more than just basic sites:
- Campsites: Crags Campground is one of the larger campgrounds in the area, featuring approximately 22 to 27 sites spread across two loops: Sawtooth Loop and Matterhorn Loop. The Sawtooth Loop contains reservable sites, while the Matterhorn Loop typically operates on a "first-come, first-served" basis. There's a mix of standard sites, tent-only walk-in sites, and even some double or triple sites that can accommodate multiple vehicles and up to 12 people (e.g., Sawtooth campsite #26). Each site generally includes a paved parking spur, a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and a bear-proof food storage locker (bear box). This spacing between lots is often appreciated by campers.
- Restrooms: The campground offers flush toilets, which are a significant amenity for a national forest campground and are often praised for being clean and well-maintained.
- Potable Water: Potable (drinking) water is available at several spigots located throughout the campground, a crucial convenience for campers.
- No Hookups: It's important to note that RV sites at Crags Campground do not have hookups (water, sewer, or electricity). While RVs and trailers can be accommodated (some sites up to 35 feet, double sites up to two 40-foot RVs), campers must be self-sufficient regarding power and waste.
- Showers: There are no showers directly at Crags Campground. However, coin showers are available nearby, typically within a 4-minute drive at a facility like Twin Lakes Resort or Annett's Mono Village.
- Camp Host: Reviews consistently highlight the presence of a "great camp host" who is helpful and contributes to the positive atmosphere of the campground.
- No Cell Service: Similar to many remote Sierra campgrounds, Crags Campground has little to no cell reception. This is often viewed as a positive feature by those looking to disconnect, though a small bar of service might appear "every once in a blue moon." Free Wi-Fi is available at nearby resorts for urgent connectivity needs.
- Firewood: While not always guaranteed, firewood may sometimes be available for purchase from the camp host. Campers should also obtain a California Camp Fire Permit for any fire or stove use.
Crags Campground appeals to those who truly want to immerse themselves in the mountain environment without feeling overwhelmed by crowds. The consistent availability of first-come, first-served spots, even on busy holiday weekends like Memorial Day, makes it a reliable choice for spontaneous trips.
Fishing: With Robinson Creek running alongside the campground and Lower Twin Lake just a short walk away, Crags is an excellent destination for anglers. Both the creek and the lake are known for trout fishing, making it a "super chill" spot to cast a line, even if "luck" can vary as noted by one customer.
Hiking: The campground's location provides excellent access to a variety of hiking trails. The surrounding rugged mountains invite exploration, with opportunities for day hikes or longer treks into the nearby wilderness areas. The proximity to the Twin Lakes also opens up options for lakeside strolls or more strenuous climbs into the higher elevations.
Wildlife Viewing: The natural environment means encounters with local wildlife, such as deer and bears, are possible. Campers are reminded to use the provided bear boxes for food storage to ensure safety and prevent attracting animals.
Proximity to Local Amenities: While offering a primitive feel, Crags Campground benefits from its relative closeness to amenities. The "Twin Lakes Resort" is just a short drive away, offering a general store that is praised for being well-stocked with "boats and a great general store," providing convenient access to supplies, bait, tackle, and even dining options.
In essence, Crags Campground is ideal for campers seeking a quiet, uncrowded mountain escape. It's a place to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. The combination of beautiful scenery, accessible fishing and hiking, essential amenities (like flush toilets and potable water), and a friendly camp host make it a highly recommended spot for a memorable Eastern Sierra camping experience. Its appeal lies in its ability to offer a genuine wilderness feel without being entirely off-grid, making it a compelling option for those searching 'Camping Near Me' in the Bridgeport area.

CRAGS CAMPGROUND Reviews
If you're looking to camp in the mountains on a holiday weekend and you hate crowds, then this is the spot. Super chill, no cell reception, great camp host, and you're not on top of your camp neighbor. They even had first come first serve spots still open on memorial day weekend. I definitely will be back In the future.
May 29, 2024 · Carl FarrisBeautiful RV campsite below rugged mountains and Lower Twin Lakes. Less trees than the campsite next to the river, but No bugs. RV sites have no hookups, no shower's at the site, however coin shower's are 4 minutes away. Twin Lakes Resort has boats and a great general store nearby. Water was only 7' below normal, fishing only. Upper lake was full.
Jun 17, 2021 · Michael HeilOne of 6 USFS campgrounds at the Twin Lakes area. Although Crags doesn't have a lot of shade, the camp spots have bigger separation than the other campgrounds so more quiet and peaceful than the other campgrounds. Open area also allows for good satellite TV reception. Two toilets serve campground; one contains pit toilets, the other are flush toilets. Campground very close (1-2 minute drive) to Twin Lakes Resort Store/Office/Marina which has free wifi. AT&T cell service works in campground; Verizon does not work.
Aug 06, 2022 · Britt WilsonGreat campground, well maintained and managed. I didn't have exact dollar amount when I checked-in so I over paid, the next day the camp host brought me my over payment. Honesty, you don't see a lot of that these days.
Sep 26, 2023 · David LanhardtLeast buggy of Twin Lake campsites; good access to creek & lanes. Spacious sites, little shade but great stargazing. Tidy & kind/attentive camp hosts. A winner!
