For local residents in Oregon seeking a convenient and engaging "camping near me" experience, A Loop Campground within Champoeg State Historic Area, located at 8239 Champoeg Rd NE, St Paul, OR 97137, USA, offers an excellent option. Situated within a historically significant state park, this campground provides a blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and well-maintained facilities, as highlighted by enthusiastic customer reviews. For inquiries and reservations, you can contact them at (800) 452-5687 or +1 800-452-5687.
One of the standout features of A Loop Campground, as mentioned by multiple reviewers, is its appealing environment and convenient location. One visitor noted its proximity to Portland while still offering a "peaceful" atmosphere. This makes it an ideal getaway for those looking to escape the city without a long drive. The campground's setting within Champoeg State Historic Area ensures access to the park's natural beauty, which likely includes scenic landscapes, mature trees, and potentially riverfront access along the Willamette River.
The campground is particularly praised for its family-friendly amenities. The presence of a "very fun" playground is a significant draw for families with children, providing a dedicated space for kids to play and burn off energy. The fact that one reviewer specifically stayed in "A-loop twice by the playground" and found it "great for families and not too loud at night" suggests that the campground is well-organized to accommodate families while maintaining a peaceful environment during sleeping hours.
Cleanliness and maintenance of the facilities are also positively noted. Reviewers specifically mentioned that "The restrooms were pretty clean" and "The bathrooms are clean," indicating a commitment to hygiene and guest comfort. Furthermore, the sites are described as "well maintained," suggesting that the campground is diligently cared for, ensuring a pleasant and organized camping experience for visitors.
Recreational opportunities abound at A Loop Campground, particularly for those who enjoy cycling. Visitors rave about the "bike trails," with one specifically mentioning "the trail to the museum" as a highlight. Champoeg State Historic Area offers an extensive network of paved and unpaved trails suitable for various skill levels, allowing campers to explore the park's historical sites and natural landscapes on two wheels. One reviewer even embarked on a "long ride to the Butteville Store," highlighting the potential for longer excursions from the campground.
However, a word of caution is offered regarding the bike trail to the Butteville Store, as it "ends on such a busy road before you maneuver down to the store." This is an important consideration for families with "little kids" and suggests that while the destination is worthwhile (with "top-notch" ice cream and service), the final stretch of the journey requires extra vigilance. This demonstrates an honest and helpful perspective shared by a fellow camper.
For pet owners, A Loop Campground is described as "very dog-friendly." This is a significant advantage for those who like to travel with their canine companions. Dog-friendly campgrounds often provide designated areas for pet relief and may have specific rules to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for all visitors, both with and without pets. This welcoming attitude towards dogs adds to the campground's appeal for a broad range of campers.
Beyond the immediate amenities of the campground itself, its location within Champoeg State Historic Area offers unique opportunities to explore Oregon's history. The park is the site of the first provisional government of Oregon and features a visitor center, museum, and historic buildings that provide insights into the region's past. The proximity of A Loop Campground to these historical attractions allows campers to combine their outdoor adventure with educational and cultural experiences.
While the provided reviews do not mention specific services like laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, or a camp store, the presence of a "water pump" is noted by one reviewer, suggesting access to fresh water within the campground. For detailed information about all available services and amenities, contacting the campground directly using the provided phone numbers is recommended. They can provide information about campsite types (e.g., tent sites, RV sites with hookups), reservation policies, fees, and any specific rules or regulations.
As there is no promotional information included in the reviews, local users should inquire about any seasonal discounts, special offers for Oregon residents, or programs related to state park camping when they contact A Loop Campground. Checking the Oregon State Parks website might also provide additional details about fees and reservation procedures for Champoeg State Historic Area campgrounds.
In conclusion, A Loop Campground at Champoeg State Historic Area offers a well-rounded "camping near me" experience for local residents. Its proximity to Portland, peaceful atmosphere, family-friendly amenities like a playground, clean and well-maintained facilities, dog-friendly policy, and access to scenic bike trails and historical attractions make it a highly recommended destination. While caution is advised regarding a specific section of the bike trail, the overall positive feedback underscores the appeal of this campground for a variety of campers seeking a local getaway with a blend of recreation and history.

A Loop Campground, Champoeg State Historic Area Reviews
We had an awesome experience there. The restrooms were pretty clean, and the playground was very fun. There was also a water pump. That was pretty fun. Very cool there. Very dog-friendly. I highly recommend here.
Aug 06, 2024 · Cindy Xu ZhangWe love this campground! It is so close to Portland but is so peaceful. We have stayed in A-loop twice by the playground and it is great for families and not too loud at night. The bathrooms are clean and the sites are well maintained. We love the bike trails, especially the trail to the museum. We did the long ride to the Butteville Store and were surprised that it ends on such a busy road before you maneuver down to the store! Be warned if you have little kids. But the ice cream and service there are top notch!
May 26, 2022 · Annie HumeNice group area. Awesome building area with electricity, sink, wood stove, and two bathrooms. Very close to showers and the natural playground. Several of the power outlets are toast. That was disappointing. We did smoke 20 lbs of turkey breast and deep fried 30 lbs turkey. Great place for a get together.
Dec 14, 2022 · Bryan ReynoldsThe spot we have (A25) is hard to back into. The angle would work better if the roadway were one-way the other direction! Also, the electrical outlets in the box are worn out so the don't grip the plugs very well.
Oct 04, 2023 · Brad LloydIt is a very nice park with calm hiking or bicycle rides, nice views, different landscapes.
