Situated within the scenic Afton State Park, these backpacking sites provide a gateway to the park's natural beauty, characterized by rolling terrain, wooded areas, and proximity to the St. Croix River.
The environment surrounding the Afton State Park Backpacking Campsites is a key draw for local users seeking "camping near me" with a focus on hiking and wilderness immersion. The park itself boasts diverse landscapes, offering opportunities for scenic hikes and wildlife viewing. The campsites are conveniently located approximately a one-mile hike from the parking area, making them particularly appealing for those new to backpacking who desire a relatively short trek with their gear. This accessibility also benefits experienced backpackers looking for a quick and convenient overnight or weekend escape into nature.
Several notable features enhance the backpacking experience at Afton State Park. According to visitor feedback, a wood pile is located nearby, offering a one-price-for-unlimited-wood system, although campers should be prepared to saw their own firewood. This provision allows for campfires, a quintessential part of the camping experience, enabling cooking and providing warmth and ambiance during the evenings. Additionally, the presence of two vault toilets and a reliable water source within a couple of minutes' walk from any of the campsites ensures basic comfort and convenience for backpackers, reducing the need to carry large amounts of water.
The layout of the campsites is another positive aspect highlighted by users. Most sites are reported to be fairly well spread out, offering a degree of privacy that enhances the feeling of being immersed in the wilderness. While some sites may be visible from the trail if one knows where to look, the overall sense is one of seclusion and tranquility. This spacing contributes to a more enjoyable and personal connection with the natural surroundings, a primary motivation for those seeking "camping near me" for a backpacking adventure.
Wildlife encounters are also a significant feature of camping at Afton State Park Backpacking Campsites. Numerous deer frequent the area and may even approach campsites, providing memorable and potentially close-up wildlife viewing opportunities. However, campers should also be aware of other wildlife, as one reviewer recounted an encounter with a "brazen raccoon" known for its stealthy behavior and persistence in seeking food. It is strongly advised not to feed any wildlife to ensure their safety and maintain the natural balance of the ecosystem.
While the overall experience is generally positive, some campers have noted a few drawbacks. One reviewer mentioned that the toilet facilities lack ventilation and can have an unpleasant odor. Additionally, the firewood is provided in slabs, requiring campers to undertake a significant amount of sawing to prepare it for burning. These are practical considerations that local users should be aware of when planning their trip.
Another environmental factor to consider is potential noise from boats on the St. Croix River, particularly affecting the eastern campsites. While the eastern sites are described as nice, the proximity to the river may introduce some level of noise pollution, which might be a concern for those seeking absolute peace and quiet. Campers sensitive to such noise may prefer to inquire about the location of specific campsites when making reservations.
One specific campsite, Site 12, offers a unique feature: poles for hanging up a hammock. This is a notable amenity for hammock enthusiasts who appreciate the comfort and relaxation of sleeping suspended above the ground. Knowing about such specific site features can help local users choose a campsite that best suits their preferences and backpacking style.

With a relatively short hike to the campsites, essential amenities like water and toilets, and the potential for wildlife encounters, it's an appealing option for both beginners and experienced backpackers. Afton State Park Backpacking Campsites Reviews
Only about a mile hike in, this is perfect for anybody wanting to try backpacking for the first time. It's also really great for experienced backpackers too. The wood pile is close by (one price for unlimited wood, but you do have to saw it yourself). There's also two vault toilets and a water source, all within a couple minutes walk from any of the campsites. Most sites are fairly well spread out and somewhat private (some sites you can see from the trail, but only if you really know where to look). Also there are tons of deer that will sometimes walk right up to your campsite! Site 12 also has poles to hang up a hammock
Apr 11, 2023 · Crystal ReeseHiked the 1.4 miles in with gear, and set up for my first solo camping trip. Came across THE most brazen raccoon I have ever met. This dude would walk in silent as death. I’d turn around he was 6 feet away. Did a midnight hike (which was nice) back to my car just to stash the food. Do not feed the trash pandas!!Oootherwise:Toilet has no ventilation and reeks. Firewood is in slabs so you gotta do a lot of sawing. Water well works well. Eastern campsites are nice but there’s boat noise from the St Croix.
