For local users seeking a picturesque and tranquil "camping near me" experience, Applegate Lake in Southern Oregon offers a stunning natural retreat. Situated near Jacksonville, this location provides a beautiful lake for swimming, breathtaking mountain views, and an abundance of trees, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere perfect for a getaway.
Located at 15111 Upper Applegate Rd, Jacksonville, OR 97530, USA, Applegate Lake is easily accessible for local residents. According to visitor feedback, the lake itself is a major highlight, offering a refreshing and enjoyable swimming experience. One reviewer who spent six nights at the location specifically mentioned the lake as "great to swim in to cool off!" Another visitor noted that the "temperature of the water was perfect not too cold," making it ideal for leisurely swims and family fun. The rising water levels compared to the previous year, as mentioned in a review, suggest a healthy and vibrant lake environment for water activities.
The natural environment surrounding Applegate Lake is consistently praised for its beauty and tranquility. Surrounded by mountains and an abundance of trees, the campground offers a truly immersive experience in nature. The air is clean, and the nights are quiet, providing a welcome escape from the noise and stress of daily life. For those who appreciate celestial wonders, one camper enthusiastically noted that "my goodness are the stars something to see" at night, indicating exceptional stargazing opportunities due to the remote location and clear skies.
Applegate Lake caters to those seeking a more rustic and nature-focused camping experience. It's important to note, as one reviewer pointed out, that if you are looking for "powered hook-ups and good cell coverage, this isn't the best place for you." This suggests that the campground prioritizes a more natural and undisturbed environment over extensive modern amenities. However, for those who value "a quiet remote getaway with a great lake, beautiful skies, and clean air," Applegate Lake comes highly recommended.
Convenience is also offered through an on-site camp store, which is appreciated by visitors for providing easy access to snacks and potentially other essential items. This can be particularly useful for campers who prefer not to venture far for basic necessities during their stay.
Adding a unique and somewhat quirky element to the Applegate Lake experience is its proximity to a local attraction: a Bigfoot trap. According to one reviewer, it's a short (approximately 30-minute) hike from the campground to this unusual site. While the existence of Bigfoot remains a mystery, the presence of the trap offers an interesting and perhaps humorous side excursion for adventurous campers looking for something out of the ordinary to explore.

Applegate Lake Reviews
What a beautiful place in southern Oregon! I spent 6 nights here in between paragliding flights. The lake is great to swim in to cool off! The camp store is convenient for snacks. From the campground it is a short (30 min?) hike to a Bigfoot trap...no joke. It's quiet at night and my goodness are the stars something to see. If you are looking for powered hook-ups and good cell coverage, this isn't the best place for you. If you want a quiet remote getaway with a great lake, beautiful skies, and clean air, I can recommend this place.
Aug 11, 2024 · TJ StattVery beautiful and peaceful surrounded by mountains with abundance of trees. The temperature of the water was perfect not to cold and the lake has risen since last year. You can rent equipment to enjoy the water even more and you can camp around the lake as well. Definitely my daughter's favorite place to swim.
Jun 25, 2023 · Danielle MurphyWhat a beautiful lake and outdoor experience overall! Idyllic mountain lake paddle boarding and kayaking without the crowds. The campground hosts and general store folk were very hospitable, and full of local info.
Aug 15, 2024 · Nick GilbertWe took a late evening cruise on the lake on our SUPs. There were light winds which died down rather quickly. There were maybe two other vessels on the lake. It was an awesome time in a beautiful area!
