Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground Introduce
For local users in Michigan seeking a "camping near me" experience that combines natural beauty with a rustic, more adventurous feel, Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground, located in Grayling, MI 49738, USA, offers a unique opportunity along the scenic Au Sable River. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground provides breathtaking river views, opportunities for wildlife observation, and access to fishing and trails. However, potential visitors should be aware of a reported access challenge and the nature of the camping facilities.
The environment of Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground is clearly a major highlight for those who have experienced it. Situated along the renowned Au Sable River, the campground offers what one reviewer described as "absolutely beautiful!" The views from the docks and landing are noted as "breath taking," suggesting a picturesque setting that is ideal for nature lovers. The possibility of spotting wildlife crossing the river or along the trails adds to the allure of this location, promising an immersive experience in the natural world. The campground is also described as "huge" and "mostly shaded," indicating ample space and a comfortable environment even during warmer months. For local users seeking a "camping near me" spot with significant natural appeal, Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground appears to be a strong contender.
The services and features of Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground lean towards a more rustic camping experience. One crucial piece of information is that while camping is available at the river, access requires walking to the river with all your camping gear, food, and other necessities. This indicates that this is not a campground where you can park directly at your campsite along the river. This walk-in camping experience caters to those who are comfortable with carrying their equipment and prefer a more secluded and primitive setting. The campground does provide basic amenities, including out-houses for restroom facilities and wells for water. These features align with a more traditional and less developed camping style.
Recreational activities at and around Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground seem to focus on enjoying the natural environment. Fishing is described as popular, although it is strictly "catch n release." This is important for anglers to note. The presence of trails suggests opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding area. The campground is also explicitly mentioned as "dog friendly," which is a significant plus for campers who like to bring their canine companions along on their "camping near me" adventures. The name "Canoe Camp Ground" strongly implies that it is a popular spot for those canoeing or kayaking on the Au Sable River, offering a convenient place to camp along their river journey.
One important piece of information to consider, highlighted by a recent reviewer, is a potential access issue. This guest reported trying to access the campground based on directions from a DNR (Department of Natural Resources) map but discovered the "road" to be gated off and overgrown. This resulted in them having to find a different State Forest campground. This is a significant practical consideration for potential visitors. It is strongly recommended that local users verify the current access situation and directions with the campground management or the DNR before attempting to travel to Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground. This could save considerable time and frustration.
In terms of maintenance, one reviewer noted that DNR personnel mostly check on the campground on Sundays, unless they are busy, in which case it might be every couple of days or so. This provides a general idea of the level of oversight and when to potentially expect to see maintenance staff. The reviewer also highlighted that there is "lots of wildlife an nature to enjoy!" reinforcing the campground's appeal for those seeking a natural and potentially wildlife-rich "camping near me" experience.
Given the rustic nature of Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground, it is unlikely to offer extensive services or amenities beyond the basics mentioned (out-houses and wells). Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient, bringing all necessary camping equipment, food, and water purification if they prefer not to rely solely on the well water. The focus here is clearly on the natural environment and the opportunities for activities like canoeing, hiking, and fishing.
Currently, there is no information available regarding any promotional offers or special rates for Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground. As it appears to be a DNR-managed campground, any fees or booking procedures would likely be in line with state park or forest campground policies. Local users interested in camping here should consult the Michigan DNR website or contact them directly for information on reservations, fees, and any potential discounts for state residents or for specific times of the year.
In conclusion, Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground offers a potentially beautiful and rustic "camping near me" experience along the Au Sable River in Grayling, MI. With its breathtaking river views, opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing (catch and release), and hiking, it appeals to those who enjoy a more natural and adventurous camping style. The walk-in camping requirement to the river campsites and the basic amenities (out-houses and wells) reflect this rustic approach. However, potential visitors must be aware of a reported access issue via the road indicated on a DNR map and should verify the current access situation before planning their trip. For local users prepared for a more primitive camping experience in a stunning natural setting, Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground could be a rewarding choice, provided they confirm the accessibility and come prepared for the conditions.

Au Sable Canoe Camp Ground Reviews
Tried to access from road which DNR map shows you directions , to discover its gated off and overgrown "road" to camp ground. Ended up at a different StF camp.

Fishing there is popular but it's catch n release. Can go camping at the river but you have to walk, along with you're camping gear, food, ect. down to the river. Has out-houses, an wells for water. Dog friendly. Huge spot, an mostly shaded. DNR maintenances mostly check on Sundays, unless if they're busy then it's every couple of days or so. Lots of wildlife an nature to enjoy!
Feb 10, 2019 · Maggie GasserLanded here while kayaking this weekend. Be advised: all signage says NO CAMPING; seems like an oxymoron (Canoe Camp...but no camping allowed). Nevertheless, a pleasant place to stop, with water and an outhouse.
