Back Forty Ranch Introduce
For local residents in the Rothbury, Michigan area searching for a "camping near me" experience that combines traditional camping with exciting recreational amenities, Back Forty Ranch, located at 3180 W Wilke Rd, Rothbury, MI 49452, USA, offers a unique and potentially fun-filled getaway. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground stands out for its family-friendly attractions, including a small water park area, multiple pools, and a communal fire pit, while also being welcoming to dogs. However, it's important for local users to be aware of some noted drawbacks, such as a potential issue with water odor in some areas and a safety concern within the cabins.
Exploring the Environment and Unique Features:
Back Forty Ranch appears to be designed with family entertainment in mind. One of its most notable features is a small water park area. This includes a shallow pool area suitable for young children, another pool equipped for volleyball and basketball, and a unique water ride. This water ride involves sitting on an inner tube and sliding down a track that goes through a barn, offering a brief but thrilling experience that was a highlight for one family's children. The campground also provides a shared fire pit area located near the cabins. This setup encourages social interaction among campers, offering a chance to meet and connect with other families, as one reviewer positively experienced. The mention of cabins suggests that Back Forty Ranch offers accommodation options beyond traditional tent or RV camping. While the overall ambiance is described as "relaxing," the presence of water park features indicates a lively and activity-oriented environment, particularly during warmer months. The campground is also noted as being "good for dogs," suggesting a pet-friendly policy that would appeal to local campers who travel with their furry companions.
Services and Amenities Offered:
Based on the customer reviews, the services and amenities at Back Forty Ranch include:
- Water Park Area: Featuring a small kids' pool, a pool for volleyball and basketball, and a unique inner tube water ride through a barn.
- Multiple Pools: Providing various options for swimming and water-based recreation for different age groups and interests.
- Shared Fire Pit Area (Near Cabins): A communal space for campfires, socializing, and enjoying the evening ambiance.
- Cabin Rentals: Offering an alternative to tent or RV camping with cabin accommodations. These cabins appear to have a loft sleeping area.
- Pet-Friendly Environment: Welcoming to dogs, making it a suitable option for pet owners looking for "camping near me."
- Friendly People: Both reviewers mention the friendly nature of the people at the campground, suggesting a welcoming and community-oriented atmosphere.
While not explicitly stated, it can be reasonably assumed that the campground provides essential services such as restroom facilities, and potentially showers. However, the reviews do not offer details on the cleanliness or quality of these basic amenities. Additionally, the process of checking in at a main area with a larger water park (presumably associated with the ranch but located separately) and then traveling to the Back Forty section is mentioned, indicating a multi-area facility. Local users should clarify the specifics of check-in and the relationship between the different areas when booking.
Key Features and Family-Focused Fun:
Back Forty Ranch's key features seem to revolve around providing entertainment and a social atmosphere, particularly for families:
- Unique Water Ride: The inner tube slide through a barn is a standout attraction that provides a memorable and fun experience for all ages.
- Diverse Pool Options: The availability of multiple pools caters to different preferences, from young children to those wanting to play water sports.
- Social Interaction: The shared fire pit area encourages interaction among guests, fostering a sense of community.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: Allows families to bring their dogs along on their camping trip.
- Cabin Accommodations with Lofts: Offers a unique sleeping arrangement that children seem to enjoy.
These features make Back Forty Ranch an attractive "camping near me" option for local families looking for a vacation with built-in entertainment and a social camping experience.
Important Considerations and Potential Drawbacks:
Despite the positive aspects, local users should be aware of the following concerns raised in the reviews:
- Stair Safety in Cabins: One reviewer noted a significant safety issue with the stairs in the cabins, stating they are "pitch black" at night and pose a tripping hazard when going to the bathroom. The recommendation to leave a light on all night highlights the severity of this issue. Families with young children or individuals with mobility concerns should inquire about the lighting situation in the cabins.
- Water Odor: Another reviewer mentioned that "the water smells like rotten egg." This could indicate a sulfur issue in the water supply, which might affect the comfort and enjoyment of using the water for showering or other purposes. Local users sensitive to smells should inquire about the source and prevalence of this issue.
- Distance Between Check-In and Campground: The need to check in at a separate main area with a water park and then drive to the Back Forty section (about half a mile away) might be an inconvenience for some guests.
These potential drawbacks are important for local users to consider when deciding if Back Forty Ranch meets their needs and preferences for a "camping near me" experience.
Limited Promotional Information and Potential for Return Visits:
The reviews do not contain specific promotional offers or discounts. However, the fact that one family is "thinking of doing it again next year" suggests a positive overall experience despite the stair lighting issue. They are even planning to bring additional recreational items, indicating an anticipation of a continued enjoyable time. This intent to return can be seen as an implicit endorsement of the overall experience offered at Back Forty Ranch, particularly for families with children who enjoy the water park features and social aspects of the campground.
Conclusion for Local Campers:
Back Forty Ranch in Rothbury, MI, offers a unique "camping near me" experience with its small water park, multiple pools, and communal fire pit, making it particularly appealing to families with children. The pet-friendly policy and friendly atmosphere are additional positives. However, potential local visitors must be aware of the reported issues with stair safety in the cabins and the odor of the water, as these could significantly impact their comfort and safety. It is recommended that local users inquire about these concerns directly with the campground management before booking a stay. If these issues are addressed or deemed manageable, Back Forty Ranch could provide a memorable and fun-filled local camping getaway.

Back Forty Ranch Reviews
July 2021 - my family had a blast here in the back 40 ranch. The pool area back here has a small kid area. Another pool to play volleyball and basketball. Behind that is this water ride where you sit on an inner tube. Takes maybe 9 seconds to fly down it, through a barn and out you go. My 3 kids did it maybe 20 times in a row. Hardly a wait and that was their favorite part of our week vacation. By the cabins there is a spot to do a shared fire. We got to know 2 other families, and that was awesome. If we had our own, we would have never talked to anyone. The only knock I had was in the cabin, the stairs need a light or something. Its pitch black and if you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, good luck not falling. We left one light on all night. However, my children loved sleeping in that loft. When you check in at the main area with the water park. You leave their and go to the main road. Turn left and maybe 1/2 mile on the left is the back 40. You will see a big sign. Nice people, and we are thinking of doing it again next year. Next year I am bringing my basketball, S'mores kit, and some outdoor games the kids can play.
Jul 26, 2021 · Brian DThis place is good for dogs! Friendly people, relaxing place and safe! But the water smells like rotten egg. I stayed for 3 nights
Feb 18, 2025 · CWe went on a special event weekend and it was really loud. Not from the kids but the adults playing music and doing shots. Mechanical decorations made noise all night and some type of heater or generator kept going on and off all weekend. Didn't get much sleep. Wood is expensive compared to other campgrounds. Breakfast was OK but they were really understaffed. The water park got shut down but whatever the issue was, they fixed it fairly quickly. A good scrub down at the water park would help. Community bars of soap in the locker rooms is a gross idea. I would go back but it isn't my first choice.
Oct 20, 2024 · Suzanne FeoleI really enjoyed the area. Not only are there trail rides, but also the ice cream is amazing. There are also quite a few fun kids attractions, like the park and pool! We really had a fun time there.
Jul 15, 2023 · madison palmerThe Back Forty Village was shut down when we camped. My daughter enjoyed riding the horses and the crew there were amazing in hospitality.Bathrooms need attention as they were dirty and out dated. The indoor mini golf at Double JJ ranks toward the top of my list for fun and excitement. Only issue there is dress light as you feel the heat and humidity from the Waterpark.Really think if marketing was done right, people whom stay the night on the resort would receive discounts for the water park. Also, web page needs to be updated informing guests of what is open vs closed. We don't mind paying for a resort with resort prices if the resort is open!
