Let's explore in detail what makes Back Ridge Shadows, LLC a noteworthy choice for your next local camping adventure.
Breathtaking Mountain Views and Serenity
A recurring highlight in the customer reviews is the incredible scenery and peacefulness offered by Back Ridge Shadows, LLC. One camper who stayed in April 2025 specifically mentioned "the views and the serenity!" This underscores the campground's prime location high in the mountains, providing panoramic vistas and a tranquil environment far removed from the noise and stress of urban life. For local users yearning for a genuine mountain escape and a chance to immerse themselves in natural beauty, this campground appears to be an ideal retreat.
The fact that the RV and tent sites are "actually on the mountains" further emphasizes the unique setting. Campers can expect to be surrounded by the rugged terrain and lush forests of the Appalachian Mountains, offering a truly immersive outdoor experience. Imagine waking up to stunning mountain sunrises and enjoying the peaceful quiet of the mountain evenings.
Friendly and Engaging Host
The hospitality at Back Ridge Shadows, LLC also receives high praise. Eber, the host, is described as "great" and "friendly." One reviewer recounted spending an hour chatting with him, indicating a personal and welcoming approach to hosting guests. This kind of friendly interaction can significantly enhance the camping experience, making visitors feel more welcome and connected to the location. For local users who appreciate a personal touch and enjoy interacting with their hosts, Eber seems to be a significant asset to the campground.
Accommodation Options for RVs and Tents
Back Ridge Shadows, LLC caters to both RV and tent campers. One reviewer with a 33' travel trailer reported fitting "just fine" in site 5, which offered a "full hookup." This is excellent news for RV owners seeking "camping near me" with the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. The availability of full hookups (likely including water, electricity, and sewer) makes it a convenient option for longer RV trips and those who prefer the comforts of home while on the road.
For tent campers, a "water spigot is available," providing a convenient source of water for drinking and other needs. Additionally, "small restrooms" are available for tent campers, offering a basic but essential amenity. While the specifics of these restrooms (e.g., flush toilets vs. vault toilets) are not detailed, their availability is a definite plus for tent campers who prefer not to rely solely on wilderness facilities.
Proximity to Natural Attractions
The location of Back Ridge Shadows, LLC offers excellent access to some of the region's most significant natural attractions. It is described as being "very close to Spruce Knob overlook and Spruce Knob Lake." Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. Spruce Knob Lake provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and enjoying a serene mountain lake environment. The campground's proximity to these destinations makes it an ideal basecamp for local users wanting to explore the Monongahela National Forest and the Spruce Knob Recreation Area.
The Monongahela National Forest itself offers vast expanses of wilderness, with numerous hiking trails, scenic drives, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Staying at Back Ridge Shadows, LLC provides easy access to these natural wonders, allowing campers to immerse themselves in the beauty of the West Virginia highlands.
Important Considerations for Your Stay
While the campground offers many positives, there are a few practical considerations mentioned in the reviews that local users should be aware of:
- Narrow Mountain Road: Accessing the campground involves navigating a "narrow road up/down the mountain." However, one reviewer noted that "the folks on the narrow road up/down the mountain were patient to make room for us," suggesting that while the road might be tight, local drivers are generally accommodating. RVers, in particular, should be prepared for this type of road and exercise caution while driving.
- Weak Cell Phone Service: A significant point to note is that "this entire area has very weak cell phone service." Therefore, if you rely heavily on cellular communication or internet access, you should be prepared for limited connectivity. Campers who enjoy listening to music should ensure it is downloaded on their phones before arriving.
- Potential Crowding in Tent Area: One reviewer cautioned that "if the tent camping area is fully booked, I can see it being pretty crowded." They recommended asking the host about the occupancy levels, especially if you prefer a more secluded tent camping experience.
- Firewood and Ice Availability: Firewood is available for purchase at the campground, which is a convenient amenity. For ice, the D&K Dairy Bar is mentioned as a nearby option, and if it's closed, the Sunoco station in Circleville also carries it. This provides helpful local information for essential supplies.

Back Ridge Shadows, LLC Reviews
April 19-16th 2025: the views and the serenity! Eber is a great, friendly host- He and I spent about an hour chatting one evening. If you are looking for an RV or tent site that's actually on the mountains, contact these folks. We brought our 33' travel trailer up the mountain and stayed in site 5 with full hookup. The folks on the narrow road up/down the mountain were patient to make room for us and we had a wonderful time exploring the Monongahela National Forest.
Apr 19, 2025 · Barnes & CompanyThe host was great and very responsive to our questions via text. Firewood is available for purchase. Water spigot is available for tent campers. Small restrooms available for tent campers as well. This entire area has very weak cell phone service, so if you want to listen to music, make sure you have it downloaded on your phone before you go. Very close to Spruce knob overlook and spruce knob lake. If you need ice, D&K diary bar is not too far away. If they are closed, the Sunoco station in Circleville also has it. One thing I will add, though, if the tent camping area is fully booked, I can see it being pretty crowded. Maybe ask the host how busy it is and take that into consideration.
Apr 16, 2025 · Wesley SloanWhen summer's heat is a misery, go to Back Ridge Shadows! It was 100 degrees in the valley on the day we arrived, but it was a pleasant, somewhat breezy 85 degrees at Back Ridge Shadows, due to the 4,000 foot elevation of this campground. As I write this review, most of Sawmill Run Road, the shortest access road from highway 28, is being paved. Eber, the proprietor, is attentive and concerned that his residents have a pleasant stay. Our campsite was mostly shaded and exposed to the full sun for only about two hours per day. It was very quiet and peaceful at Back Ridge Shadows. There is very little traffic on the road past the campground, and the sounds of wildlife in the woods were quite noticeable. It is a small, quiet and highly secluded campground that is extremely satisfactory for those who want to experience the sounds and presence of nature.
Jul 23, 2024 · Richard ThomasSpent a weekend in the Fall at Back Ridge Shadows. The owner of the campground was extremely helpful, and accommodating. Everything was clean and well kept. Excellent overall experience!
Nov 06, 2024 · Anthony ShowersHad a wonderful 3 night stay tent camping here in early October. The owners were so attentive and helpful and checked in every evening (but not obtrusive). Easy access to electric and water spigot. The pit toilets were as pleasant as pit toilets can be (toilet paper was provided which is very nice). Great big picnic table was near our site and fire pit that you could move around were great. Very peaceful and the leaves were beginning to change. Would definitely camp here again if in the area.
