Basin Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a camping experience immersed in nature within the "camping near me" category, Basin Campground, located on Basin Rd in Chatham, New Hampshire, presents an opportunity for a tranquil retreat. Situated in the scenic landscapes of New Hampshire, this campground offers a generally well-maintained environment centered around a pond, providing a natural setting for outdoor enthusiasts.
Based on recent customer feedback, the campground itself and the area surrounding the pond have been noted as being "very well maintained." This suggests that visitors can typically expect a clean and orderly environment, enhancing the appeal of a natural getaway. The presence of a pond offers a potential focal point for recreation, with one reviewer mentioning swimming as an activity. However, it is crucial to take note of the specific caution provided: "if you want to swim beware of leeches." This natural aspect of the pond environment is important for potential swimmers to consider for their comfort and safety.
A significant feature of Basin Campground, as experienced by at least one recent visitor, is the limited cell phone reception. In their words, "I wasn't expecting to loose cell reception but it was a nice respite from technology for the weekend." This lack of connectivity can be viewed in two ways. For those who need to stay connected for work or personal reasons, it might be a disadvantage. However, for individuals or families seeking a true escape from the digital world and an opportunity to fully immerse themselves in nature, the limited cell service can be a welcome feature, promoting relaxation and a break from technological distractions.
Regarding the essential services and facilities at Basin Campground, the customer reviews offer a somewhat contrasting perspective. On the positive side, one reviewer explicitly mentioned that "luckily the porta potties were very clean." This indicates that while the permanent bathroom facilities may be facing issues, the campground is providing and maintaining clean alternative sanitation options for its guests. The cleanliness of portable restrooms is often a significant factor in overall camper satisfaction, especially when permanent facilities are not up to par.
Conversely, the reviews also highlight significant concerns regarding the permanent bathroom facilities at Basin Campground. One long-time visitor stated that "The campground bathrooms have become unusable/very dirty," and further noted that "most recently, they shutdown the campground due to the bathrooms due to plumbing issues." These are serious concerns that potential local users searching for "camping near me" should be aware of. The unhygienic conditions and plumbing problems have evidently impacted the usability of the permanent restrooms and even led to a temporary closure, suggesting a potentially ongoing issue that may affect the camping experience.
The same long-time visitor also mentioned missing the "old camp hosts" and expressed hope that the "new hosts can become more organized to restore this place to how Carol and Roy used to manage it." This comment suggests a change in management and potentially a decline in certain aspects of the campground's operation or maintenance since the previous hosts were in charge. It implies that past visitors may have had a more positive experience, particularly regarding the management and potentially the upkeep of facilities like the bathrooms. The hope for the new hosts to improve the organization and restore the campground to its former standards indicates a potential for future improvement but also highlights current shortcomings.
Despite the issues with the permanent bathrooms, the positive feedback regarding the maintenance of the campground grounds and the pond area suggests that the natural environment of Basin Campground remains a key draw. The well-kept surroundings contribute to a pleasant outdoor atmosphere for activities beyond just using the restroom facilities. The pond, even with the leech advisory, still offers a natural element for potential enjoyment, whether it's for scenic viewing or other forms of recreation besides swimming.
The provided reviews do not offer specific details about other amenities that are typically found at campgrounds. These might include the availability of individual campsites suitable for tents and recreational vehicles (RVs), the presence of fire rings or picnic tables at each site, access to potable water sources, and waste disposal facilities. Local users considering Basin Campground should inquire directly about these essential amenities when contacting the campground, as this information is not available in the provided feedback.
Similarly, there is no promotional information or special offers mentioned in the customer reviews. For local users interested in booking a stay at Basin Campground, it is highly recommended to contact them directly using the provided phone numbers: (603) 447-5448 or mobile +1 603-447-5448. Calling ahead will allow you to get the most current information on campsite availability, pricing, the current status of the bathroom facilities (and any alternative arrangements), and any specific rules or regulations for campers. It would also be a good opportunity to inquire about any ongoing efforts to address the concerns raised in the reviews regarding the bathrooms and overall management.
In conclusion, Basin Campground in Chatham, NH, offers a natural camping experience in a generally well-maintained setting with a pond. The limited cell service can be a draw for those seeking a digital detox. However, potential local users searching for "camping near me" should be aware of the significant concerns raised in recent reviews regarding the cleanliness and functionality of the permanent bathroom facilities. While clean porta potties are available as an alternative, the issues with the main bathrooms are a factor to consider. It is strongly recommended to contact the campground directly for the most up-to-date information on the status of all facilities and to make an informed decision based on your individual needs and expectations for a camping experience. Despite the challenges with the bathrooms, the natural beauty of the location may still appeal to some seeking a rustic retreat in the New Hampshire outdoors.

Basin Campground Reviews
Spent almost 3 days here. The campground is very well maintained as well as the area around the pond, if you want to swim beware of leeches. I wasn't expecting to loose cell reception but it was a nice respite from technology for the weekend. The bathrooms definitely need work but luckily the porta potties were very clean.
Aug 05, 2024 · Mike MacBrienI used to love coming here, and miss the old camp hosts. The campground bathrooms have become unusable/very dirty and most recently, they shutdown the campground due to the bathrooms due to plumbing issues. I hope the new hosts can become more organized to restore this place to how Carol and Roy used to manage it.
Sep 26, 2024 · Sarah TinkhamHad an alright two nights here camping from Sunday-Tues. Campsites are clean, and well-spaced. Restrooms are a few porta-potties. The pond is walkable and gorgeous in a beautiful little bowl of mountains that always seems to catch a cloud. Amazing star-gazing, and I bet there's some great fishing to be had. However, there's very little presence of anyone "running" the campsite. Our site was reserved online, and was clearly marked out for us, but we did not interact with any staff, and ended up grabbing the last bundle of firewood which wasn't re-stocked on Monday.Second night had a large group of college-aged kids partying and singing loudly till around 9:30-10-ish (well after sundown), and I'm not sure if they were told to quiet down, or did it themselves. Also had what I assume was a Chatham local do a drive through in his sedan, racing around the loop with high-beams on and blasting on his horn. Only happened once around 9pm on a Monday night, but was kind of exasperating, and I'm glad no one got hurt.No swingsets or anything like that for kids, but that's alright for a campground like this. Our 4-year old found plenty of rocks to climb and jump off of, and was able to run around without us feeling like he was bothering others.
Aug 27, 2024 · Ian CarlsenWe had gone to this campground for many years before Covid. We stopped by the other day in our car, July 2024, and were amazed how this campground has gone downhill. We understand that the wonderful longtime hosts retired a few years ago. The campsites are getting overgrow. The bathrooms are deplorable with one bathroom completely closed down and most of the beautiful slate tiles all torn up. They have replaced them with porta-potties. The public picnic area is a mess with overgrown trees and un-mowed grass. The boat launch has a large metal piece sticking up right where you back your trailer in. The Forest Service should be embarrassed with how this campground appears now. We won’t be going here in the future.
Jul 16, 2024 · JAC ColeRooms are campsites which are very clean. The restroom is clean. Very nice folks taking care of the grounds. I was glad to know that there are people who can help you out if your car won't start!
