Let's explore in detail what makes Bells Island Campground a potentially ideal choice for your next local camping adventure.
A Beautiful Waterfront Environment on the Intercoastal Waterway
One of the most significant draws of Bells Island Campground is its stunning location on the water, specifically along the Intercoastal Waterway. This offers a unique camping environment with potential for breathtaking water views, opportunities for boating and other water-related activities (though specifics aren't detailed), and a generally serene and picturesque setting. For local users who are drawn to waterfront camping and the tranquility of being near the water, Bells Island Campground presents an attractive prospect. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of the water and enjoying the scenic beauty of the Intercoastal Waterway right from your campsite.
The mention of the "beautiful area" in one of the reviews further emphasizes the appealing natural surroundings of the campground. Currituck County is known for its coastal beauty, including the Currituck Sound and the Outer Banks nearby. Campers at Bells Island Campground can likely expect to be immersed in this scenic environment, with opportunities for exploring the local natural landscape beyond the campground itself.
Exceptional Hospitality: Going Above and Beyond
The reviews for Bells Island Campground overwhelmingly highlight the exceptional kindness and hospitality of the staff, particularly Sandy and another unnamed individual. One reviewer who was traveling the Intercoastal Waterway on a sailboat gave Sandy a glowing five-star rating specifically for her hospitality. Despite the reviewer ultimately not staying due to timing, Sandy went out of her way to communicate with them via telephone and text about the campground and even came out to the dock to wave as they passed. This level of care and attentiveness speaks volumes about the welcoming nature of the campground management.
Another reviewer recounted arriving late in the dark, having never been to the campground before. Upon calling, the owner arranged for a tenant to meet them, who was described as "incredibly kind." This tenant ensured the reviewer was safely parked and set up, and even walked them to the bathrooms and showers to ensure they felt safe navigating a new place in the dark. This extraordinary gesture of kindness highlights a deep commitment to guest comfort and safety, making Bells Island Campground a potentially reassuring choice for solo travelers or those arriving at unconventional hours.
Basic but Clean and Warm Facilities
While the hospitality receives high praise, one reviewer described the showers and bathrooms as "basic but clean and warm." This provides important information about the campground's facilities. Local users should expect functional and well-maintained amenities without perhaps the added luxuries of more resort-style campgrounds. Cleanliness is a crucial factor for any camper, and the positive mention of the cleanliness of the basic facilities at Bells Island Campground is reassuring. The added note of the showers being warm suggests a comfortable experience even with basic amenities.
Waterfront Access and Potential Activities
Being located on the Intercoastal Waterway opens up potential for various water-related activities. While the reviews don't explicitly detail what is offered at the campground itself, the location suggests possibilities such as:
- Boating: Access for small boats or kayaks might be available, allowing campers to explore the waterway. The first review mentions a sailboat passing by, indicating the waterway is navigable.
- Fishing: Waterfront locations often provide opportunities for fishing, either directly from the shore or from a boat. Local regulations regarding fishing in the Intercoastal Waterway would apply.
- Wildlife Viewing: Coastal waterways are often rich in wildlife, offering opportunities for birdwatching and observing other marine or estuarine creatures.
- Scenic Views: Campers can likely enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the water, adding to the overall ambiance of their stay.
Local users interested in specific waterfront activities should inquire directly with the campground about access and any associated facilities or regulations.

Bells Island Campground Reviews
I am writing to give Sandy at Bells Island campground 5 stars for her hospitality. My husband and I traveled the Intercoastal Waterway on a small sailboat. Sandy went out of her way to telephone and text with me about their beautiful campground on the water. We ended up not staying at Bells Island on account of timing, but she came out to the dock and we waved as we passed!
Mar 26, 2025 · Janet WagnerBeautiful area and the kindest people. I arrived later than I hoped and in the dark and had never been there. I called once I turned onto the road and he had the tenant meet me, she was so incredibly kind and made sure I was parked, set up, and even walked me to the bathrooms and showers to make sure I felt safe arriving in a strange place in the dark. Truly the kindest gesture, also just so beautiful there, showers and bathroom basic but clean and warm :)
Oct 27, 2024 · Rosie LewinskiA campground hidden, way back, from the main road. If you blink you can easily miss the road to turn on to. The park does not have paved or asphalt roads but ill maintained gravel. And both bathroom houses were closed for use. The lots are small but have the necessary camper hook up and the view is beautiful however the price is too high, in my opinion, for the few amenities that this place boasts. It's more of an overpriced tiny cottage house campground. The upkeep for the property is subpar in my opinion. A one way in and out gravel road with holes to avoid. Disheveled/ dilapidated wooden structure on the property makes it look cheap. A small pier to fish off of was the only positive about this camping ground aside from the view. Even the view was blocked by some tiny homes that lacked up keep. They also charge you for having guests that may visit you while you're here; at $2 a head, how ridiculous.
Mar 28, 2024 · Kaleidoscopic RetrospectThis place is such a gem!!! Clean bathrooms, excellent water front campsites and the host is just the most wonderful man!! He came to say hello and welcome with his darling dog Diva (cutest teacup chihuahua). This is the perfect, off the beaten path spot to stay for the night or three! If you come here, you’ll be happily surprised by the kind neighbors, amazing water views and cool breeze. Please don’t drive through this area and miss this place. 10/10 recommend!!!!
Sep 27, 2023 · Lauren BraggThis was a great campground. Loved the tent spots, right on the water. Bill the gentleman who ran it was Awesome!! He felt bad because mother nature tried to run us off, but we rode it out. He brought us a refund and a home cooked meal. It was amazing. I would give it a higher rating if I could.
