Bentonsport Campground Introduce
For local residents in Iowa searching for "camping near me," Bentonsport Campground, located at 22098 Hawk Dr, Keosauqua, IA 52565, USA, offers a unique camping experience in the historic and rural setting of Van Buren County. You can reach them for inquiries at (319) 293-3589 or their mobile number +1 319-293-3589.
Based on feedback from recent visitors, Bentonsport Campground is situated on the picturesque Des Moines River, providing a "beautiful site for camping" with scenic river views. The campground is described as being within the "historic, rural Van Buren County," suggesting an environment rich in history and natural beauty, potentially offering a peaceful and less crowded camping experience.
The campground offers both electric and tent sites, catering to different camping preferences and equipment. The availability of electric sites is a significant convenience for RV owners and those who rely on electricity for their camping needs. Tent sites provide a more traditional camping experience for those looking to immerse themselves fully in nature.
However, it is important to note the limitations in amenities at Bentonsport Campground. According to one reviewer, there are "no showers and only pit toilet facilities." This is a crucial piece of information for potential campers who value these amenities. Those planning to stay at Bentonsport Campground should be prepared for a more rustic experience in terms of hygiene facilities. One resourceful camper mentioned using a cooking pot and a camp spigot for a makeshift shower, highlighting the need for self-sufficiency in this regard.
Despite the lack of showers, the beautiful riverside location and the proximity to the charming village of Bentonsport appear to be significant draws. One reviewer who was bicycle touring stayed overnight and found the location to be ideal. They mentioned riding a short distance to Bentonsport, where a sandwich shop is open on weekends, providing a convenient option for meals and refreshments. The reviewer also enjoyed the evening by the river, taking photos and appreciating the scenery. The friendly atmosphere of Bentonsport village was also noted as a positive aspect, with the reviewer expressing a desire to camp there again someday.
Another camper also "loved camping here!!" and echoed the sentiment about the "beautiful views of the river." This positive feedback reinforces the appeal of the campground's natural setting. Interestingly, this reviewer mentioned "nice showers too," which directly contradicts the previous reviewer's statement about the absence of showers. This discrepancy suggests a potential change in amenities over time or a difference in the specific camping area or type of site experienced by each reviewer. Potential campers should seek clarification from the campground management regarding the availability of showers.
This second reviewer also pointed out a couple of downsides. They mentioned issues with flies, which can be common in riverside locations, especially during certain times of the year. Additionally, their campsite did not have a grate on the fire pit, requiring them to purchase a grill. This suggests that while fire pits are provided, campers might need to bring or purchase their own grates for cooking over the fire, and should be prepared for potential insect issues.
The fact that this second reviewer still plans to return despite these minor inconveniences speaks to the overall positive experience they had at Bentonsport Campground, likely due to the beautiful location and potentially the presence of showers (if the amenity information has been updated or varies by site). Their intention to return can be seen as a positive endorsement.
Based on the combined feedback, Bentonsport Campground offers a scenic camping experience along the Des Moines River in a historic and rural setting. It provides electric and tent sites, catering to different camping needs. While one review indicated the absence of showers and only pit toilets, another mentioned "nice showers," suggesting a need for clarification on this amenity. Campers should be prepared for potential insect issues and may need to provide their own grate for the fire pit. The proximity to the friendly village of Bentonsport, with at least one weekend dining option, adds to the appeal.
For local users searching for "camping near me" who appreciate natural beauty, a riverside location, and a historic setting, Bentonsport Campground in Van Buren County could be a worthwhile option. The availability of electric sites is a plus for some, while tent campers can enjoy a more traditional experience. However, it is crucial to confirm the current status of shower facilities with the campground management. Campers should also be prepared for potential insects and the possibility of needing a fire pit grate.
To obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information about the amenities, including the availability of showers, and to inquire about any specific site features, local users are strongly encouraged to contact Bentonsport Campground directly at (319) 293-3589 or +1 319-293-3589. They can also inquire about any specific guidelines regarding fire pits and potential insect concerns during different seasons. The positive feedback regarding the beautiful location and friendly nearby village suggests a potentially enjoyable "camping near me" experience, provided that the amenity situation meets the camper's needs.

Bentonsport Campground Reviews
Bentonsport County Campground is in historic, rural Van Buren County. I stayed there for the night while bicycle touring one summer. The campground is on the Des Moines River, and is a beautiful site for camping. The county campground has electric and tent sites, but there are no showers and only pit toilet facilities.I arrived in the afternoon, set up camp, "showered" with my cooking pot at a camp spigot, and rode my bike a short way to Bentonsport, where there is a sandwich shop open on weekends. After a sandwich and ice cream, I enjoyed the evening on the river, snapping a few photos. It rained during the night, and the next morning I transported my stuff to a gazebo in town in order to dry out my tent before packing.Bentonsport is a friendly little village, and I imagine I'll camp there again someday.
May 12, 2018 · Tom KeplerWe loved camping here!! Beautiful views of the river and nice showers too. Only downside was the flies and our campsite didn't have a grate on our fire pit so we had to go buy a grill. We plan to come back soon!
Jul 05, 2021 · Becky CarlsonQuiet and clean. Right next to the Des Moines river!
Feb 09, 2023 · Kirk MagillWe pulled in on a Saturday without a reservation. Website said there are generally site’s available and there were several. The host had a sign out “off duty” and there were no instructions on how to proceed. It was a beautiful location but sketchy. The hosts motorhome was littered with junk. Scary place. We left and made our way over to the state park and it is lovely.
Jul 20, 2024 · Sandra ZeliadtThe riverbank was very pretty, the campground was quiet and clean, and geodes are super common around the area.
