Last year my wife and I checked the campground out and were disappointed that it was out of sight of the lake. This year, scrub trees have been removed, so the lake is visible from the lower campground. We’re looking forward to camping there. It’s August, and my wife and I are camping here in our new “tall” teardrop trailer. The electric sites here off RV sewer row have 50-foot cement pads, electric access, and water. The sites are clean, and the plots nicely mown. The camp hosts were polite and helpful. The restroom/showers are pretty new, although there are only two showers and two toilet stalls in each gender restroom, two for the women and one urinal and sit down for the men. It might get busy come weekends. The tent area is completely separate from the electric sites, with great grass and flat areas for tents. There are shade trees with a couple with great shade. Water has recently been brought in, at least a couple of spigots. A fairly large minus is that there are no restrooms in this area, at this time, so its somewhat of a hike if nature is calling!Van Buren County made a good effort to make this park an easy camping experience, and I’ve seen quite a few county parks in SE Iowa because of my bicycle camping. If you want local primitive camping, hit the campgrounds in Shimek Forest. Sugema is more civilized, and there’s nothing wrong with that. - Tom Kepler

Lake Sugema Campgrounds Introduce

For local residents in the Keosauqua, Iowa area seeking a convenient and comfortable "camping near me" experience, Lake Sugema Campgrounds, located at 19640 Jersey Ave, Keosauqua, IA 52565, USA, presents an appealing option with recent upgrades and distinct camping areas. The environment of Lake Sugema Campgrounds has seen improvements, most notably the removal of scrub trees that now allows for lake views from the lower campground. This enhancement addresses a previous concern and now offers campers the scenic beauty of Lake Sugema. The campground is described as more "civilized" compared to the primitive camping available in nearby Shimek Forest, suggesting a focus on providing amenities and a more structured camping experience. The grounds appear to be well-maintained, with "clean" electric sites and "nicely mown" plots, contributing to an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable camping environment.

In terms of services and features, Lake Sugema Campgrounds offers distinct areas catering to different camping preferences. For RV campers, the electric sites located off RV sewer row boast significant upgrades, including "50-foot cement pads," electric access, and water hookups. These sites appear spacious and well-equipped to accommodate larger RVs, providing a solid and level base. The recent installation of water at each site is a notable improvement, adding to the convenience for RV users. For those preferring tent camping, Lake Sugema Campgrounds provides a "completely separate" tent area characterized by "great grass and flat areas" ideal for pitching tents. The presence of "shade trees," with some offering "great shade," enhances the tent camping experience, providing relief from the sun. Water spigots have also been recently added to the tent area, increasing convenience for tent campers. However, a significant drawback for the tent area is the current lack of restrooms, requiring a "somewhat of a hike" to reach the main facilities.

The campground features a "pretty new" restroom and shower facility. However, it's important to note that the capacity might be limited, with only two showers and two toilet stalls in each gender restroom (two for women, one urinal and one sit-down toilet for men). This could potentially lead to congestion during peak times, particularly on weekends. Despite the limited number of facilities, their newness suggests they are likely clean and well-maintained. The camp hosts are described as "polite and helpful," indicating a positive and supportive staff presence that can enhance the overall camping experience for visitors.

While the provided information doesn't explicitly mention promotional offers, the recent upgrades to the RV sites (pads and water hookups) and the addition of water spigots to the tent area can be seen as improvements that enhance the value and appeal of Lake Sugema Campgrounds for local users. The improved lake views from the lower campground also add to the attractiveness of the location. Van Buren County's efforts to make the park an "easy camping experience," as noted by one reviewer familiar with other county parks in Southeast Iowa, suggest a commitment to providing a user-friendly and well-maintained facility. For local residents seeking a more "civilized" camping option compared to primitive camping in nearby areas like Shimek Forest, Lake Sugema Campgrounds offers a balance of natural beauty and modern conveniences.

In conclusion, Lake Sugema Campgrounds presents a welcoming "camping near me" option in the Keosauqua, Iowa area. Located at 19640 Jersey Ave, it offers upgraded RV sites with 50-foot cement pads and water hookups, as well as a separate tent area with flat grassy sites and shade trees, now with added water spigots. The recent removal of trees has improved lake views from the lower campground. While the restroom and shower facilities are new, their limited capacity might be a consideration during busy periods. The camp hosts are reported to be polite and helpful. For local campers seeking a well-maintained and accessible campground with lake views and modern amenities, Lake Sugema Campgrounds provides a "civilized" and enjoyable camping experience.
