This island haven, accessible by boat, provides a more secluded and intimate connection with nature, making it an ideal choice for individuals, families, and small groups seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The environment of Betty's Island is characterized by its natural beauty and peaceful ambiance. As an island on a large lake, it boasts stunning waterfront views and opportunities for direct interaction with the pristine waters of Smith Mountain Lake. The shoreline invites exploration, and the gentle lapping of waves creates a soothing soundtrack to your camping experience. The island itself is adorned with mature trees, many of which are perfect for hanging hammocks, allowing you to relax and sway gently in the breeze while enjoying the surrounding scenery. The presence of these trees also offers natural shade, providing a comfortable environment even during warmer months.
Based on feedback from fellow campers, Betty's Island features several desirable flat spots that are well-suited for setting up tents. This is a significant advantage, ensuring a more comfortable and stable camping experience compared to uneven terrain. The island's natural layout encourages a sense of privacy and allows campers to choose their ideal spot, whether it's nestled amongst the trees or closer to the water's edge. The emphasis on preserving the island's natural state is evident in the request to keep it clean and the restriction against cutting shrubs and trees for firewood, highlighting the importance of responsible camping practices.
In terms of services and features, Betty's Island offers a more primitive camping experience, focusing on the essentials and the natural surroundings. One notable feature mentioned by visitors is the presence of a good fire pit. This communal area serves as a focal point for cooking, warmth, and gathering in the evenings, fostering a sense of camaraderie among campers. However, it's crucial to note that campers are responsible for bringing their own firewood or charcoal, as utilizing the island's natural vegetation is prohibited. This underscores the need for preparedness and self-sufficiency when planning a trip to Betty's Island.
The primary appeal of Betty's Island lies in its natural features and the opportunities they afford for recreation and relaxation. For those who enjoy boating, kayaking, or paddleboarding, the lake offers ample space for exploration and adventure. The island serves as a perfect basecamp for a day spent on the water, allowing you to return to a tranquil setting in the evening. The reviews also highlight the enjoyment of packing a lunch and enjoying a meal with the beautiful lake views as your backdrop, further emphasizing the island's potential for peaceful daytime excursions.
While Betty's Island offers a unique and rewarding camping experience, it's important for potential visitors to be aware that it likely does not offer the developed amenities found at traditional campgrounds. There may not be designated restrooms, running water, or electrical hookups. Therefore, campers should be prepared for a more rustic and self-sufficient experience, bringing all necessary supplies, including water, food, cooking equipment, and waste disposal bags. Betty's Island Reviews
Love this island, quite a few nice flat spots for tents. Let's do our best to keep it clean. We took off 5 bags of trash and only one was ours. There is one good fire pit, and that's all that's needed. Plenty of good trees to hang hammocks from. Make sure to bring firewood or charcoal as cutting shrubs and trees on the island is not allowed. One of many amazing islands on Smith Mountain Lake
Jun 01, 2021 · Trail HeadsGreat place to relax and take a nice dip on the lake of Smith Mountain and have lunch if you pack it.
Jul 26, 2021 · Denise SimmonsBeautiful 😍 loved camping here. Primitive but open space enough for few families.
Apr 15, 2023 · Casey DarterThe fact someone's earlier review talks about letting dogs run loose, myself and quite a few others will stay far away. I don't want dog fights, vet bills, and dog poop everywhere ruining our trip! Extremely irresponsible as pet owners to let your dogs run loose.
Apr 10, 2024 · Crystal RoopeLooking for a place to let your dogs run loose? This is it. We had such a fun afternoon hanging out with the family there!
