My family had a great experience at big bear state forest campground. There were 2 separate campgrounds. The first one was mostly campers and rvs. We were looking for a bit more privacy, and a spot on the water to pull up our small boat. We found an amazing site next to the boat launch. We had an approximate 250 foot walk from our site to the water where we had our boat tied off. The water was pretty clean with a beach area. The beach is currently under water because of the high water levels, but that was fine with us. We were able to anchor the boat and walk to the beach. Big bear is an all sports lake, which we like because it is nice to take a fast boat ride to cool off. There is a convenience store/ gas station a short drive away with everything you need. Plenty of locals have firewood for sale as well. We brought our own water, which I would suggest because there was no running water on our side, just a couple of outhouses. Overall we had a great time and will definitely be back! - Perry Cummings

Big Bear Point State Forest Campground Introduce

Are you searching for "camping near me" in the Johannesburg, Michigan area, looking for a more rustic and nature-oriented experience? Big Bear Point State Forest Campground, located at 6011 William H Kelly Rd, offers just that. Based on visitor feedback, this campground provides a unique opportunity to camp in a state forest setting with access to Big Bear Lake. It appears to cater to those seeking a quieter, more private camping experience, particularly those interested in lake activities.

Environment and Location: Big Bear Point State Forest Campground is situated on Big Bear Lake, an all-sports lake, in a state forest environment. Reviews indicate that the campground has at least two distinct areas. One section is described as being mostly for campers and RVs, suggesting more developed sites. The other area, where one reviewer stayed, offered more privacy and direct access to the water, including a spot to pull up a small boat near the boat launch. This suggests that the environment varies within the campground, offering options for different preferences. The presence of Big Bear Lake, an all-sports lake, is a significant environmental feature, allowing for activities like fast boat rides, which one reviewer enjoyed. While the natural beauty of the state forest is implied, the direct access to the lake seems to be a primary draw. It's also noted that a convenience store/gas station is a short drive away, providing access to essential supplies, and that local firewood is readily available for purchase.

Services and Amenities: The services and amenities at Big Bear Point State Forest Campground appear to lean towards a more rustic camping experience, at least in the area described by one reviewer. They mentioned that there was no running water on their side of the campground, with only a couple of outhouses available. This suggests that campers should be prepared to bring their own water, as the reviewer recommended. The presence of a boat launch is a key amenity for those looking to enjoy Big Bear Lake with their boats. While one section of the campground caters to campers and RVs, the specific hook-up details for these sites are not provided in the reviews. The availability of a nearby convenience store/gas station and local firewood vendors adds to the practical aspects of camping here. The second review simply describes the location as a "nice quiet rustic spot to camp," reinforcing the idea of a more basic and nature-focused camping experience.

Features and Atmosphere: A primary feature of Big Bear Point State Forest Campground is its access to Big Bear Lake, including the availability of a boat launch. The lake being an all-sports lake opens up opportunities for a variety of water activities. For those seeking privacy, at least one section of the campground seems to offer more secluded sites, some with direct waterfront access. The atmosphere, as described, is "quiet rustic," suggesting a more natural and less developed camping environment compared to some private campgrounds. The separation into different camping areas (one for RVs/campers, another with more private, waterfront sites) caters to different camping styles. The ability to tie off a small boat near a campsite and the proximity to a beach area (even if currently underwater due to high water levels) are also notable features for lake enthusiasts.

Points to Consider: Potential campers should be aware that at least some parts of Big Bear Point State Forest Campground offer a more rustic experience with no running water and only outhouse facilities. Therefore, self-sufficiency in terms of water and other amenities might be necessary depending on the chosen campsite. The high water levels affecting the beach area at the time of the review are also something to keep in mind, although the reviewer found this manageable. The campground seems to offer a range from more developed RV/camper sites to more secluded, potentially less amenity-rich waterfront spots. If you are looking for a highly developed campground with full facilities at every site, parts of Big Bear Point State Forest Campground might not meet your needs. However, if you value privacy, waterfront access, and a quieter, more rustic setting, it could be ideal.

Promotional Information: For local users searching for "camping near me" who appreciate the beauty of Michigan's state forests and the allure of lake activities, Big Bear Point State Forest Campground offers a unique opportunity. Imagine waking up to the tranquility of the forest and having direct access to Big Bear Lake for boating, swimming, and other water sports. The availability of a boat launch makes it particularly appealing for those with boats. If you prefer a camping experience with more privacy and a closer connection to nature, consider the waterfront sites. While some areas are more rustic with limited amenities like running water, the overall experience of being in a state forest with lake access is a significant draw. For those with RVs or campers, there is also a designated area. We recommend that you contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which typically manages state forest campgrounds, to inquire about specific site availability, amenities at different sections of the campground, and any current regulations or alerts (such as water levels).
