Camp Pleasant is such a nice place. You get far away from the trailhead that it isnt too noisy but you arent killing yourself getting there. A couple of nice spots are right off the trail for probably about half a mile after hitting camp pleasant, but there are also a couple nice campsites on the "island" there too. Definitely worth checking out. - Rob Campbell

Camp Pleasant Introduce

For local adventurers in Washington State seeking a more secluded and nature-immersed 'camping near me' experience, Camp Pleasant, located near Hoodsport, WA 98548, USA, offers a unique backcountry escape. Based on the available user reviews, Camp Pleasant provides a tranquil setting that balances accessibility with a sense of remoteness, making it an appealing destination for those looking to venture slightly off the beaten path and enjoy a more natural camping environment.

One of the key features of Camp Pleasant is its location relative to the trailhead. A reviewer notes that the campground is situated "far away from the trailhead that it isn't too noisy but you aren't killing yourself getting there." This suggests that reaching Camp Pleasant involves a manageable hike, providing a sense of being deeper in nature without requiring an overly strenuous trek. This balance of accessibility and seclusion can be particularly attractive to campers of varying fitness levels who desire a more peaceful and less crowded camping experience compared to drive-up campgrounds.

The campground itself offers a variety of camping spots, catering to different preferences. The review mentions "a couple of nice spots are right off the trail for probably about half a mile after hitting camp pleasant." These sites offer convenience and relatively easy access after the initial hike. Additionally, there are "also a couple nice campsites on the 'island' there too." This intriguing detail suggests a unique geographical feature within the campground – an "island," likely formed by a stream or other water body, offering a more secluded and potentially scenic camping experience. Camping on an island can provide a heightened sense of privacy and immersion in the natural surroundings.

Another reviewer describes Camp Pleasant as a "sweet little spot" and mentions the availability of "some really nice sites here," further reinforcing the positive aspects of the camping locations within the area. The variety of campsite locations, both near the trail and on the "island," provides campers with options to choose a setting that best suits their needs and preferences, whether they prioritize easy access or greater seclusion.

However, the reviews also provide some important considerations for potential visitors. One camper noted that there are "not many good options for hanging food," specifically mentioning "one Big Leaf Maple as you come into the site." In backcountry camping, properly hanging food is crucial for protecting it from wildlife. The limited options for this at Camp Pleasant might require campers to be more creative or bring specific equipment to ensure their food is safely stored. This is a practical consideration for those planning to bring their own food supplies.

Another significant point raised in a review is the condition of the "privy," which was described as "the worst back country privy I have seen." While backcountry facilities are often basic, this strong negative assessment suggests that the toilet situation at Camp Pleasant might be less than ideal. Potential visitors should be prepared for this and perhaps carry their own sanitation supplies as a precaution.

Despite the concerns about food hanging options and the privy, the overall sentiment towards Camp Pleasant remains positive, with reviewers highlighting the nice campsites and the pleasant hiking access. One reviewer also mentioned "a really nice site about 10 mins up the trail" from the main Camp Pleasant area, indicating the potential for further exploration and discovery of even more secluded and appealing camping spots nearby.

Considering the platform category 'camping near me', Camp Pleasant offers a distinct type of experience for local users:

  • Backcountry Setting: Enjoy a more remote and natural camping experience accessible via a hike.
  • Manageable Hike: The trail to the campground is described as not overly strenuous.
  • Variety of Campsites: Options include sites near the trail and more secluded spots on an "island."
  • Tranquil Environment: Located far enough from the trailhead to minimize noise.
  • Potential for Further Exploration: A nice campsite reported to be a short hike beyond the main area.

It's important to note that the reviews do not provide information on specific amenities beyond the privy, such as water sources (though the "island" suggests proximity to water), fire pits (though often present in backcountry sites, it's not explicitly mentioned), or permit/fee requirements. Local users interested in camping at Camp Pleasant should consult relevant local authorities, such as the Olympic National Forest or other managing agencies in the Hoodsport area, to obtain information on permits, regulations, water availability, and any other essential details for backcountry camping in this region.

The positive aspects highlighted by the reviewers – the pleasant hike in, the tranquil setting away from noise, and the unique island campsites – suggest that Camp Pleasant is a worthwhile destination for those seeking a more adventurous and nature-focused 'camping near me' experience. However, potential visitors should also be aware of the limitations regarding food hanging and the reported poor condition of the privy and plan accordingly. By preparing for these aspects and embracing the backcountry environment, campers can likely enjoy the "nice" and "sweet" little spot that is Camp Pleasant.

In conclusion, Camp Pleasant near Hoodsport, WA, offers a backcountry camping experience characterized by a manageable hike to the site, a tranquil environment, and unique "island" camping opportunities. While there are considerations regarding food storage and the privy, the overall positive feedback suggests a rewarding experience for those seeking a more secluded and natural 'camping near me' option in the Washington wilderness. Local users are encouraged to gather additional information from relevant authorities to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip to Camp Pleasant.
