Camp Storey Introduce
For local residents seeking a tranquil and picturesque "camping near me" experience, Camp Storey, located on Girl Scout Ln in Jessieville, AR 71949, offers a unique opportunity. Situated on the shores of Lake Ouachita, this campground, reachable at (501) 767-8187 or +1 501-767-8187, is described by visitors as "very nice and secluded" and "very peaceful," embodying the essence of a traditional camping getaway.
The environment surrounding Camp Storey is a significant draw. Nestled on Lake Ouachita, the area is characterized by a large cove with calm waters, making it an ideal spot for various water activities. According to a visitor, the cove is "plenty big enough for fishing and skiing," catering to both leisurely anglers and water sports enthusiasts. The fact that the campground is "wrapped around" in this cove suggests a sense of enclosure and privacy, contributing to the secluded and peaceful atmosphere highlighted in the reviews.
Lake Ouachita itself is renowned for its clear waters and scenic beauty, surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. This proximity offers campers at Camp Storey the chance to immerse themselves in nature, enjoy the lake views, and potentially explore the surrounding wilderness. The calm waters of the cove would be particularly appealing for families with children or those who prefer gentler conditions for boating and swimming (though one review mentions it was always too cold for swimming during past Girl Scout visits, indicating water temperatures might vary seasonally).
One reviewer who visited family members camping at Camp Storey noted its secluded and peaceful nature, aligning with the expectations of a traditional camping experience. This suggests that the campground prioritizes a natural and undisturbed environment, away from the noise and crowds of more developed areas. This aspect would be particularly attractive to those seeking a genuine escape into nature.
Interestingly, one review reminisces about past experiences at Camp Storey as a Girl Scout camp, mentioning it closed down 21 years prior to the reviewer's current age of 45 (as of the time of the review). This historical context adds a layer of nostalgia and suggests that the location has a long-standing connection to outdoor activities and youth development. While the camp may have transitioned to a more general campground, its history as a Girl Scout camp likely instilled a focus on nature appreciation and outdoor skills.
The mention of a "not very long boat trip to get to either Mountain Harbor or Crystal Springs by water" is a significant feature for those interested in exploring the broader Lake Ouachita area. Mountain Harbor and Crystal Springs are known for their marinas, resorts, and additional amenities, suggesting that while Camp Storey offers a secluded setting, it's also within relatively easy access to more developed recreational hubs on the lake. This provides a balance between peaceful retreat and access to more services and activities if desired.
While specific services and features of the current Camp Storey as a campground are not detailed in the provided reviews, we can infer some possibilities based on its location and the nature of camping in general:
- Water Access: Given its location on Lake Ouachita, direct access to the lake for boating, fishing, and potentially swimming (depending on seasonal conditions) is a primary feature. The calm cove is particularly advantageous.

Camp Storey Reviews
Visited my parents who were camping there. Very nice and secluded. Very peaceful and how one would expect to camp. The area on Lake Ouachita is wrapped around in a very large cove and has calm waters, but is plenty big enough for fishing and skiing. It's not a very long boat trip to get to either Mountain Harbor or Crystal Springs by water.
Jul 20, 2020 · Derek JohnsonI was thinking about all the fun times I had in Girl Scouts at Camp Storey growing up. I was thinking about it today since we moved to Hot Springs Village Saline County. I was sad to see it closed down 21 years ago at that! I’m 45 so I was 15 and under going to Camp. I quit GS my 10th grade year. I really wish my daughter could join but will be awhile because of covid. It was so nice to see the pics posted it bought back memories we never got to swim it was always too cold for some reason. But I remember sneaking rolls from dinner because we were always so hungry and and snacks were banned because of varmits. It was so nice 👍 fun times.
