Camp Wilkerson Park Introduce
For local residents in the Rainier, Oregon area searching for "camping near me," Camp Wilkerson Park, located at 65866 Apiary Rd, Rainier, OR 97048, USA, and reachable at (503) 556-3536 or +1 503-556-3536, presents a camping and recreational area with a particular emphasis on equestrian activities. Reviews from visitors offer contrasting perspectives, highlighting both its positive attributes and some limitations that potential campers should consider.
One enthusiastic reviewer describes Camp Wilkerson Park as a "phenomenal place," recalling a positive experience from five years prior and noting that a recent visit (on or after April 1, 2025) showed that the park has maintained its beauty, cleanliness, and maintenance standards. This reviewer also specifically mentions an updated kids' area, indicating the presence of a playground, which is a significant feature for families camping with children. Additional amenities noted include BBQ areas, fire pits, and some covered spaces, suggesting facilities for outdoor cooking and gathering. The park also welcomes RVs, making it accessible to a broader range of camping preferences. This review paints a picture of a well-kept and versatile campground that could be a "hidden gem" for local users.
However, another review offers a different perspective, emphasizing that Camp Wilkerson Park is "mainly for horses and horse camping." This reviewer points out that there are "not a lot of trails for hiking" and describes the surrounding area as having been logged, resulting in small trees and a lack of "real attractions or good views." The review summarizes the park as offering "minimal trails through logged forest" and suggests that its setup is primarily oriented towards horse campers and limited trail riding. This perspective indicates that while camping is available, the overall environment and recreational opportunities may be more tailored to equestrian users than to those primarily interested in hiking or scenic views.
Considering the platform category of "camping near me," local users should take both of these reviews into account to determine if Camp Wilkerson Park aligns with their specific camping needs and interests. If you are an equestrian enthusiast looking for a campground with facilities for horses and access to trails (even if limited), this park may be a good option. The positive review regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and amenities like the playground and BBQ areas also suggests a comfortable stay.
The environment of Camp Wilkerson Park appears to be characterized by a previously logged forest, which might mean younger tree growth and potentially less dense canopy compared to old-growth forests. This could impact the amount of shade available at campsites and the overall scenic appeal for those seeking expansive natural vistas. However, the first reviewer still found the beauty of the park to be "amazing," suggesting that even with the logged areas, the park still retains a pleasant natural ambiance. The presence of a playground indicates that the park is family-friendly, at least in terms of amenities.
The services and features of Camp Wilkerson Park, based on the reviews, include:
- Campsites: Welcoming to RVs and presumably also accommodating tent campers (though not explicitly stated).
- Playground: Recently updated, making it a family-friendly destination.
- BBQ Areas: Providing facilities for outdoor cooking.
- Fire Pits: Allowing for campfires (subject to local regulations).
- Covered Areas: Offering shelter from the elements.
- Equestrian Facilities: Primarily geared towards horse camping and trail riding (extent of facilities not detailed).
- Limited Hiking Trails: Not a primary focus, with trails described as "minimal" and through a logged forest.
- Cleanliness and Maintenance: Positively noted by one reviewer.
The contrasting views on the trails and surrounding environment are important for local users to consider based on their primary camping activities. If hiking is a priority, Camp Wilkerson Park may not be the best choice according to one reviewer. However, if you are interested in a clean, well-maintained campground with amenities like a playground and are open to a setting within a logged area, or if you are an equestrian camper, it could be a suitable option.
There is no specific promotional information mentioned in the provided reviews. Local users interested in learning about camping fees, reservation procedures, or any special offers should contact Camp Wilkerson Park directly at the provided phone number. It would also be advisable to inquire about the extent of the equestrian facilities and trails if that is a primary interest.
In conclusion, Camp Wilkerson Park in Rainier, OR, offers a "camping near me" experience with a dual focus: general camping amenities and facilities for horse camping. Key takeaways for local users include:
- Positive Aspects: Reported beauty, cleanliness, good maintenance, updated playground, BBQ areas, fire pits, covered spaces, and RV welcome.
- Equestrian Focus: Primarily set up for horse campers and trail riding.
- Limited Hiking: Minimal trails available, located within a logged forest.
- Environment: Situated in a previously logged area, which may impact scenic views and trail experiences for hikers.
- Family-Friendly: The updated playground makes it appealing for families with children.
Local campers should weigh these points against their preferences. If you are an equestrian camper or a family looking for a clean campground with a playground and basic amenities in the Rainier area, Camp Wilkerson Park may be worth considering. However, if hiking and scenic natural landscapes are your top priorities, you might want to explore other options for "camping near me." Contacting the park directly at (503) 556-3536 will provide the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding availability, fees, and the specifics of their facilities and trails.

Apr 07, 2025 · PUMA LeeMainly for horses and horse camping. Not a lot of trails for hiking. Area has been logged trees are small and no real attractions or good views of the surrounding area. To summarize minimal trails through logged forest. Setup is mainly for horse campers and a little trail riding.
May 29, 2023 · J ChambersCamp Wilkerson is one of my most beloved places in Oregon. It's small, but grand in the sense of trails and outdoor exploring.I have never been here for camps and neither have my kids, but I've stayed in the cabins numerous times and have made day trips several times a year. It's well maintained. Has bathrooms that are clean and comfortable. The newest built (remodeled?) bathrooms near the horse camps have showers as well.Besides the great cabins and trails, there is wildlife that can be seen as well (take a look at those prints!). We've never seen any cougars around, but know they're out there seeing you before you can sense them. Trails are abound that can also lead outside the actual property of Wilkerson, that end up just being an extended adventure. There are log roads near as well that can be walked up and down that connect to the property. So getting around on foot is not an issue at all.My 6 year old loves the place and our dog ventures with us. He gets excited just getting near the place.
Feb 24, 2021 · Bryan MCamp Wilkerson Park is a peaceful retreat that allows you to disconnect and recharge. With no internet, it's a great place to unwind and enjoy nature. The trails, including horse trails, are fantastic, and the park provides bathrooms and showers for convenience. Highly recommended for a tranquil getaway.
May 25, 2023 · Paola Restrepo TafurCamp Wilkerson is such a treasure. It is close enough to town to get supplies but far enough away to feel like you are truly getting a break from everything. I will warn you that you won't have cell reception out there. But we all need a break from that occasionally. They have reasonably priced cabins, three-sided Adirondacks, and plenty of open tent spaces.
