Three spots for the horseless, and each of these spaces are generous and not far from a vaulted toilet. Great spots for tent campers, car campers, van or truck campers and people with short trailers. Reservations required. We were there in October 2024 and there was just one other site taken, a father and adult son in a long trailer, there to elk hunt. There's two vaulted toilets in the horse area and one in the day use area, both clean and well stocked when we were there. No water, unfortunately (when we were there, the pump was broken). There's a lovely short hiking only trail next to the creek. Otherwise, hiking is limited, since most of the trails seem to be for horses only. If trees aren't being harvested, the forest road up into the hills is nice and has nice views near the top. With the campsite almost empty, it was gloriously quiet. During elk season, wear a very bright hat or vest. Only reason I'm not giving it four stars is because of the lack of a lot of hiking trails. - Jayne Cravens

Northrup Creek Horse Camp Introduce

Are you a local user in search of a distinctive "camping near me" experience near Clatskanie, Oregon? Consider Northrup Creek Horse Camp, located at 87644 Northrup Creek Rd, Clatskanie, OR 97016, USA. While the name suggests a focus on equestrian camping, reviews from other campers indicate that this site offers a peaceful and accommodating environment for various types of campers, including those without horses.

The environment of Northrup Creek Horse Camp is described as "nice and secluded," suggesting a quieter and more private camping experience compared to larger, more bustling campgrounds. One reviewer mentioned a "cute little creek," indicating the presence of a water feature that adds to the natural charm of the area. The surrounding area of Clatskanie, Oregon, is known for its forested landscapes, so you can likely expect a setting immersed in nature. For local users seeking a tranquil escape into the woods, Northrup Creek Horse Camp appears to offer a serene environment.

In terms of services and features, the reviews provide some helpful insights. For those without horses, there are "three spots for the horseless," and these are noted to be "generous" in size and conveniently located near a vaulted toilet. This makes the campground suitable for tent campers, car campers, van or truck campers, and those with short trailers. Reservations are required, which is important to note when planning your visit. During October 2024, one reviewer observed that the campground was mostly empty, contributing to a "gloriously quiet" atmosphere. There are two vaulted toilets in the horse area and one in the day-use area, and these were reported as "clean and well stocked" during that time. However, it's important to note that water was not available during that particular visit due to a broken pump. It would be wise to inquire about the current water situation when making a reservation.

The features of Northrup Creek Horse Camp cater significantly to equestrian users, with most of the trails seemingly designed for horses. However, for hikers, there is a "lovely short hiking only trail next to the creek." While extensive hiking opportunities might be limited within the campground itself, one reviewer mentioned that if logging activities are not underway, the forest road leading up into the hills offers nice views near the top. This suggests that there might be some additional opportunities for exploration beyond the immediate campground area, depending on current conditions.

One unique aspect mentioned in a review is that the campground is "definitely haunted." While this is a subjective and perhaps playful observation, it adds an interesting, if unusual, element to the campground's character. For local users who enjoy a bit of mystery or the ambiance of a secluded, possibly historic location, this could be an intriguing detail.

Promotional information isn't explicitly stated, but the positive aspects highlighted in the reviews serve as reasons to consider Northrup Creek Horse Camp. The generous, well-located sites for non-equestrian campers, the clean and stocked vaulted toilets, the potential for a quiet and secluded experience, and the presence of a creek and a short hiking trail all contribute to its appeal. The fact that reservations are required could be seen as a way to manage the number of visitors and maintain the peaceful atmosphere.

For local users searching for "camping near me" that offers a more off-the-beaten-path experience, Northrup Creek Horse Camp presents a compelling option. It caters well to tent, car, van, and short trailer campers looking for a quiet and secluded spot. While primarily geared towards horse camping with its extensive horse trails, it still provides comfortable and convenient amenities for those without horses, including designated sites and clean facilities. The presence of a creek and a short hiking trail offers some opportunities for nature enjoyment. However, potential visitors should be aware of the possibility of limited water availability and the focus on equestrian trails for more extensive exploration.

To plan your visit, remember that reservations are required. It would be prudent to contact the managing authority (likely the Bureau of Land Management or Oregon Parks and Recreation, given the nature of such sites) to inquire about the current status of water availability and any specific guidelines or recommendations for campers. Despite the limited hiking within the immediate campground and the past issue with the water pump, the overall positive feedback regarding the cleanliness, quietness, and suitability for various camping styles makes Northrup Creek Horse Camp a worthy consideration for your next local camping trip.
