Gnat Creek Campground

Astoria, OR 97103, USA

4.0
beautiful spot for camping.. all the sites are a very short walk to the creek and a quick mile and a half to gnat creek fish hatchery. In the three nights we stayed only one on the camper for a night. it is right off the highway and you can hear the trucks and traffic sometimes. this also leads to a few random people stopping to use the restroom.. all hours of the day and night. but the campground is awesome and I will be back. - FeSTeR thehippie

Based on available customer reviews, Gnat Creek Campground provides a beautiful environment centered around the creek and offers interesting geological features, although potential visitors should be aware of its proximity to the highway.

The environment of Gnat Creek Campground is frequently praised by visitors as a "beautiful spot for camping." A significant feature is the easy access to Gnat Creek, with all campsites reportedly being a "very short walk" to its banks. This proximity likely offers opportunities for creek-side relaxation and enjoyment of the natural water flow. Additionally, the campground is located a short distance, approximately one and a half miles, from the Gnat Creek Fish Hatchery, which could be an appealing attraction for those interested in fishing or learning about local fish populations. One reviewer also highlighted the fascinating natural reforestation process observable in the area, where old stumps and fallen trees are becoming hosts for new plant life, showcasing the resilience of nature. Geologically, the area is described as significant, marking the westernmost extent of the Columbia River Basalt Group flows, transitioning to metamorphic sedimentary rocks formed through the accretion of exotic terranes. This geological diversity has resulted in the presence of "cool rocks everywhere," deposited through glacial retreat and the aforementioned geological processes, offering an intriguing landscape for nature enthusiasts and rockhounds alike. However, it's important to note that the area is described as "very wet," which can lead to muddy conditions at times, a factor potential campers should consider, especially during wetter seasons.

While specific details regarding the services offered at Gnat Creek Campground are not exhaustively listed in the provided information, we can infer some likely amenities based on typical campground offerings and the comments from reviewers. Standard services often found at campgrounds include:

  • Individual campsites suitable for tents and potentially RVs or campers (though one review mentions only one camper during a three-night stay, suggesting a possible emphasis on tent camping or limited RV availability).
  • Access to restroom facilities. One reviewer noted that the campground's location right off the highway unfortunately leads to "a few random people stopping to use the restroom.. all hours of the day and night," which is a point of consideration regarding privacy and campground security.
  • Potable water sources for drinking and basic hygiene.
  • Fire pits or designated areas for campfires.
  • Picnic tables at individual campsites.
  • Waste disposal facilities.

Given the proximity to Gnat Creek Fish Hatchery, it is plausible that the campground caters to anglers, potentially offering information or facilities related to fishing in the area. However, this is speculative and would need confirmation. The phone numbers provided, (503) 325-5451 and +1 503-325-5451, can be used to directly inquire about the full range of services and amenities available at Gnat Creek Campground.

The features of Gnat Creek Campground extend beyond the basic services and contribute to the overall camping experience. The "very short walk to the creek" from all campsites is a significant feature, offering easy access to the water for recreational activities or simply enjoying the natural ambiance. The proximity to the Gnat Creek Fish Hatchery (1.5 miles away) is another notable feature, providing an opportunity for visitors to engage with local wildlife and potentially learn about fish conservation efforts. The geological significance of the area, with the visible natural reforestation and the presence of diverse rock types due to the convergence of different geological formations and glacial activity, offers a unique educational and exploratory aspect to the campground. For nature lovers and those interested in earth science, this could be a particularly appealing feature. However, a notable drawback mentioned by a reviewer is that the campground is situated "right off the highway," which results in audible "trucks and traffic sometimes." This noise could be a factor for campers seeking a completely secluded and quiet natural experience. Despite this, the reviewer still found the campground "awesome" and expressed intent to return, suggesting that the positive aspects outweigh this negative for many visitors.
