Campo Alto Campground

Cerro Noroeste Rd, Maricopa, CA 93252, USA

4.0
Cool campground with some great views. When we went 7/7-7/10 many of the sites were closed due to hazardous trees (which is why the closures seem a little random). When we saw the camp hosts a couple days in they mentioned they had just been notified the Friday of 4th of July weekend that the sites would have to be closed. Sites are very big a spread out. Our last night we were the only people in our part of the campground. There’s only two bathrooms and they are spread far from each other but pretty clean. No water, no bear boxes, so be prepared for that—though we didn’t see any bears and the general store is about a 15 minute drive away. For whatever reason google maps makes it seem like it will take 50 minutes to get there, but it’s much shorter. Some of the road is pretty rough as you get deeper into the campground. Best views are if you walk through the group sites—really spectacular sunset watching there. Weather really varied for us. First night was very cold and quite windy and I wish I had thought ahead to bring a heavier jacket. Wind calmed the next day and the rest of our time there it wasn’t really present in the evening. Day time temps were nice—sweatshirts in the morning, but then easily could be in tanks and shorts during the day—never too warm. We stayed at site 16. - Taylor Harrison

Campo Alto Campground Introduce

For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking a camping experience with breathtaking vistas and a tranquil ambiance, Campo Alto Campground, located off Cerro Noroeste Rd in Maricopa, CA 93252, USA, offers a compelling option within the 'Camping Near Me' category. Situated at a higher elevation, this campground is renowned for its "great views" and particularly "spectacular sunset watching," especially when viewed from the group campsites. While the natural beauty and serene environment are significant draws, potential visitors should be aware of the limited amenities and certain conditions reported by recent campers to ensure a well-prepared and enjoyable stay.

The environment of Campo Alto Campground is characterized by its elevated location, providing expansive views of the surrounding landscape. The campsites are noted for being "very big and spread out," offering a sense of privacy and ample space for setting up camp. The presence of "lots of shade" at most campsites is a significant advantage, particularly during the warmer summer months, although bringing a canopy for midday sun is still recommended. The weather at Campo Alto can be quite variable, even within a short period. Campers should be prepared for cold and windy nights, even in July, and be ready to layer clothing. Daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, often requiring sweatshirts in the morning but transitioning to comfortable tank top and shorts weather by midday. The surrounding area is home to various wildlife, including woodpeckers, squirrels, and butterflies, adding to the natural charm. While bears were not sighted by one reviewer, the absence of bear boxes necessitates proper food storage to ensure safety.

In terms of services and features, Campo Alto Campground offers a relatively rustic experience. A key point to note is the lack of water available at the campground, so visitors must bring their entire supply for drinking, cooking, and other needs. Similarly, there are no bear boxes provided for secure food storage. The campground has only two pit toilets, which are described as "pretty clean" but are "spread far from each other," so campsite selection might consider proximity to these facilities. Trash disposal is not explicitly mentioned, implying a pack-it-in, pack-it-out policy, which is common in more remote campgrounds. Each campsite likely includes basic amenities such as a fire pit and picnic table, although this is not explicitly stated in the provided reviews but is a common feature of established campgrounds.

A unique aspect of Campo Alto Campground is its popularity among bikers and motorcyclists, with several being observed by a recent visitor. This suggests that the surrounding roads and possibly nearby trails are appealing for these activities. However, for those primarily interested in hiking, the reviews indicate that there aren't many dedicated hiking trails directly within the campground. The drive to the campground itself can be "intense" if encountering other vehicles due to narrow roads, although the area is generally not heavily populated, so this might not be a frequent issue. Google Maps may also provide an inaccurate and longer estimated travel time, so local knowledge of the area might be beneficial for planning the journey.

Recent circumstances have also impacted the availability of campsites. During a visit in early July, many sites were closed due to hazardous trees, with the camp hosts reportedly receiving notification of these closures unexpectedly on the Friday of the Fourth of July weekend. This highlights the importance of checking for any current closures or alerts before planning a trip to Campo Alto Campground, especially during peak seasons. The randomness of the closures mentioned suggests that it might be best to inquire directly with the managing authority about site availability.

For local users searching the 'Camping Near Me' platform, Campo Alto Campground offers a compelling option for those who prioritize scenic beauty, a quiet atmosphere, and spacious campsites. The spectacular sunset views, particularly from the group sites (which are worth a walk through), are a significant draw. The dog-friendly nature of the campground is also a plus for pet owners, although caution should be taken regarding old pine needles off the paths that could be harmful to paws, suggesting bringing dog shoes for exploration. The silence of the campground is both a benefit (for those seeking serenity) and a potential drawback (for loud groups, as noise carries easily).

The phone number provided, (805) 434-1996 and +1 805-434-1996, can be used to inquire about current campsite availability, any recent closures, and specific regulations or recommendations for visiting the campground, especially regarding water and food storage. The address, Cerro Noroeste Rd, Maricopa, CA 93252, USA, provides the general location for navigation. Local users should be aware that the road can become rougher as you get deeper into the campground, so vehicles with good clearance are recommended.

In conclusion, Campo Alto Campground offers local users a unique camping experience characterized by stunning views, spacious and often shaded campsites, and a generally quiet environment. It is particularly well-suited for those who appreciate natural beauty, tranquility, and activities like biking or motorcycle riding. However, potential visitors must be prepared for the limited amenities, including no water and no bear boxes, and the potential for variable weather conditions. Checking for campsite closures and being mindful of the narrow access roads are also important considerations. For local campers seeking a serene getaway with spectacular scenery, Campo Alto Campground is a noteworthy option within the 'Camping Near Me' category, provided they come prepared for a more rustic camping experience.
