The environment at Carney Lake State Forest Campground is characterized by its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. As one camper described their experience, "This was great camping right on the lake... It was so peaceful and beautiful." The campground's location within a state forest suggests a setting surrounded by woodlands and the pristine waters of Carney Lake. The fact that half of the campsites are directly on the lake offers campers the unique opportunity to enjoy waterfront views and easy access for activities such as fishing, swimming, or simply relaxing by the water's edge. The experience of solitude, as noted by a visitor who camped on a Thursday night in October and found it deserted, further emphasizes the potential for a quiet and secluded getaway, especially during the off-peak season.
The services at Carney Lake State Forest Campground are described as "rustic," which typically implies a more natural and less developed camping experience compared to private RV parks or resorts. Rustic campgrounds often provide essential amenities such as vault toilets, potable water sources (which may be hand-pumped), and designated campsites with fire rings and picnic tables. The review mentioning "large campsites" suggests that campers have ample space to set up their tents or smaller camping units comfortably. While the reviews do not explicitly detail all available services, the mention of lakeside access and a "nice picnic area right next to the campground" indicates basic recreational facilities are present for visitors to enjoy the outdoors.
A key feature of Carney Lake State Forest Campground is its direct access to Carney Lake. The availability of "half of the sites... right on the lake" is a significant draw for water enthusiasts and those who appreciate scenic waterfront camping. The large campsite sizes also contribute to a comfortable and less crowded camping experience. The presence of a "nice picnic area right next to the campground" offers an additional space for outdoor dining and relaxation, separate from individual campsites. The rustic nature of the campground suggests a focus on the natural environment and a more traditional camping experience, likely appealing to those who prefer a less commercialized setting.

It is advisable to check the official DNR website or contact the campground directly to understand the available facilities and any specific guidelines for camping in a state forest campground.
The experience of solitude reported by one visitor during the off-season might be attractive to those seeking a quiet escape. However, it's important to note that conditions and occupancy levels can vary significantly depending on the time of year. Summer months and weekends are likely to be more popular. Therefore, local users planning a visit should consider the timing of their trip and whether reservations are recommended or required, especially during peak seasons.

Carney Lake State Forest Campground Reviews
I was heading home, downstate and needed a place to stay for the night. This was great camping right on the lake. I was there on a Thursday night in October and no one else was camping. It was so peaceful and beautiful. Kind of wish I could have stayed longer.
Oct 18, 2024 · Jennifer MasonVery nice rustic campground. Large campsites. Half of the sites are right on the lake. There is also A nice picnic area right next to the campground.
May 09, 2022 · Cole NeeleyThe five miles of dirt road to get in is best suited for a higher clearance SUV or pickup truck, but we made it in and out several times in small cars without any issue over our long weekend stay. This campground is actually quite well maintained considering how remote it is. Bathrooms were clean and had toilet paper stocked, though I never saw a DNR employee during my stay.About two thirds of the sites were occupied on Labor Day weekend when we stayed.Among our group of campers, we found T-Mobile had the best cell coverage here. Calls and web browsing both worked fine. Verizon and AT&T could complete calls but data was effectively unusable.
Sep 02, 2024 · Greg KruegerThe campground was beautiful and we had a great time, downside for our trip the woman's bathroom was absolutely awful, I would've hoped that before a bigger weekend like memorial weekend they would've been emptied. We ended up using the men's restroom until that one was also unusable... I will go back again, but I do hope they pay more attention to the restroom area's..
