Cedar River North State Forest Campground

Stephenson, MI 49887, USA

4.0
This is my absolute favorite place I've camped. The sites are quiet and private even if you have neighbors. There's well water and pit toilets. There's a large gas station roughly ~10 miles from the campground. The sites we've stayed at have had a little hill leading directly to the river which has always been warm when we've stayed and is full of crawfish and other little river critters. There are a few hiking trails which are beautiful. There are as many bugs as you'd expect for rural Michigan, but they were MUCH better this year (early July 2023) than last year (early July 2022). We didn't have any ticks on us and the dog only had a few, we all had repellent on. We come here to escape the chaos of the 4th of July in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and love it. There was only one other group of people staying at the campground while we were there this year.Like others have said, don't follow Google Maps directions to get here. Stay on 551 and you'll start seeing signs for the campground. - Liz Sevier

Reviewers describe the campsites as "quiet and private," suggesting a layout that provides a sense of seclusion even when other campers are present. A significant feature of the campground is its proximity to the Cedar River, with some campsites having "a little hill leading directly to the river." This offers easy access to the water, which has been noted to be "warm" and "full of crawfish and other little river critters," making it an appealing spot for nature observation and possibly wading or playing in the water. The campground is also described as being "nestled in the forest away from the road," further enhancing the sense of immersion in nature and minimizing noise disturbance. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, there are "a few hiking trails" within the area, described as "beautiful," offering opportunities to experience the surrounding state forest.

The availability of "well water" is mentioned, providing a potable water source for campers. For restroom facilities, the campground utilizes "pit toilets" or "outhouses," which one reviewer specifically noted as being "very decent in size and very clean," a detail that often concerns campers using such facilities. While the campground itself is focused on a natural experience, convenience is also considered, with a "large gas station roughly ~10 miles from the campground" for essential supplies.

They also mentioned taking precautions against ticks, with repellent used by everyone, resulting in no ticks on themselves and only a few on their dog. This provides an objective perspective on a common concern for outdoor activities in the region, suggesting that while bugs are present, they may vary from year to year and can be managed with appropriate precautions.
