Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 Introduce
For those seeking a true "camping near me" experience that ventures beyond traditional campgrounds and into the heart of nature, Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1, located along the Shawnee Backpacking Trail in West Portsmouth, OH 45663, USA, offers a promising option. This campsite caters specifically to backpackers looking for a more primitive and immersive wilderness experience within the expansive Shawnee State Forest. Based on the available customer reviews, it provides essential backcountry amenities and a rewarding natural setting for those willing to venture a bit further from developed areas.
Embrace the Secluded Natural Environment of Shawnee State Forest
Shawnee State Forest, often referred to as Ohio's Little Smokies, is a vast and rugged area characterized by rolling hills, dense forests, and scenic trails. Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 is situated within this extensive natural landscape, offering a "camping near me" experience that truly immerses you in the wilderness. One reviewer enthusiastically described the "indescribable" morning view as the sun rises, highlighting the scenic beauty that awaits those who camp here. The presence of a creek flowing right by the campsite is another significant environmental feature, providing a readily accessible water source, a crucial element for backcountry camping. The abundance of dry wood in the area, as noted by a camper, further enhances the natural camping experience by facilitating campfires without the need for extensive foraging. This setting offers a genuine escape into nature, ideal for backpackers seeking solitude and immersion in a forested environment.
Essential Backcountry Features for a Self-Sufficient Experience
Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 provides essential features that cater to the needs of backpackers seeking a more self-sufficient "camping near me" experience. The presence of an outhouse is a significant convenience, as highlighted by a reviewer, eliminating the need for campers to dig and manage their own waste disposal, adhering to Leave No Trace principles more easily. Multiple fire rings at the campsite indicate designated areas for building campfires, a central aspect of the backcountry camping experience for cooking and warmth. The relatively flat terrain of the campsite, as mentioned in one review, offers several suitable areas for setting up tents, accommodating multiple backpacking groups or individuals. These features, while basic compared to developed campgrounds, provide the necessary infrastructure for a comfortable and responsible backcountry camping experience.
Accessibility and Proximity to Water Cache
One review provides valuable information regarding the campsite's location relative to a nearby water source. Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 is located approximately 0.75 miles and about 300 feet down in elevation from a water cache situated at the intersection of the bridle trail and backpacking trail at State Forest Road 6. This is critical information for backpackers planning their trip, as it indicates the distance and elevation change involved in accessing a potentially reliable water resupply point. While the creek flowing by the campsite offers another water source, backpackers should always treat any natural water before consumption. The proximity to the water cache at the trail intersection provides an additional option, especially during drier periods. The location along the Shawnee Backpacking Trail also signifies that accessing this "camping near me" option involves hiking, further emphasizing its appeal to those seeking a true backpacking adventure.
Considerations for a Backcountry Camping Trip
Choosing Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 for your "camping near me" experience requires a different mindset and preparation compared to car camping at developed campgrounds. Backcountry camping necessitates carrying all your essential gear, including shelter, sleeping system, cooking equipment, and water filtration or purification methods. The limited amenities, such as the outhouse and fire rings, mean that campers must be prepared for self-sufficiency and adhere strictly to Leave No Trace principles to minimize their impact on the environment. This includes packing out all trash, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife. The distance from parking areas and the elevation changes involved in reaching the campsite also require a certain level of physical fitness. Backpackers should plan their route carefully, taking into account the distance to the campsite and the water cache, as well as the overall length and difficulty of the Shawnee Backpacking Trail if they intend to explore further.
Limited Information on Services and Promotional Offers
As Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 is a primitive backcountry campsite, the concept of "services" is minimal and primarily focuses on the basic infrastructure provided, such as the outhouse and fire rings. There are no hookups for water, electricity, or sewer, as this is a wilderness camping experience. Similarly, promotional offers are unlikely for such campsites, as they are typically managed as part of the state forest's trail system and camping permits, if required, usually involve standard fees. Information regarding permits and any associated fees for camping at Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 can likely be found on the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) website or by contacting the Shawnee State Forest directly. It is essential for backpackers to be aware of and comply with all regulations and permit requirements for backcountry camping in the area.

Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 offers a unique "camping near me" opportunity for those seeking an immersive and challenging wilderness experience within Shawnee State Forest. Its secluded location along the backpacking trail, access to a creek for water, the presence of an outhouse, and multiple fire rings provide the essential elements for a backcountry adventure. Shawnee Backpacking Camp 1 Reviews
This one the best campsites I've been to there was both water really close accessible through the creek that flows right by the campsite. There was an outhouse so that you didn't have to go and dig a hole to use the restroom. And there was fire pits and there's a lot of dry wood in the area so I didn't have to go far to provide fuel for my fire. Plus The View in the morning as the sun comes up is indescribable.

Oct 18, 2017 · Austin TroyaCamp 1 is huge. Plenty of fire pits and camp sites for multiple groups. We only met one other set of hikers while doing the trail. Very peaceful and relaxing here.
