Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts seeking a true "camping near me" experience focused on backpacking and immersion in nature, Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2, located in West Portsmouth, OH 45663, USA, offers a compelling opportunity. Situated within the expansive Shawnee State Forest, this campground serves as a basecamp for those looking to explore the extensive network of backpacking trails, particularly the well-regarded Shawnee Backpacking Trail. The reviews from experienced backpackers highlight its enduring appeal and the natural beauty of the surrounding area, emphasizing its suitability for multi-day treks and those seeking solitude in the wilderness.
Located within Shawnee State Forest, often referred to as Ohio's Little Smokies due to its rugged terrain and vast forested areas, Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 is undoubtedly surrounded by a rich and diverse natural environment. Backpackers can anticipate traversing through mature woodlands, across rolling hills, and potentially alongside streams and other natural features that characterize this region of southern Ohio. The reviews specifically mention the trails being "naturally beautiful," suggesting an environment that offers scenic vistas and a deep connection with the wilderness. The emphasis on solitude further implies a setting where backpackers can escape the more crowded and developed campgrounds, finding a sense of peace and tranquility in the heart of the forest.
As a designated "backpacking camp," Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 likely provides very basic amenities, catering to the needs of self-sufficient backpackers. Unlike developed campgrounds that offer facilities like electric hookups, water spigots at each site, and modern restrooms, backpacking camps typically focus on providing designated areas for setting up tents and perhaps a few primitive facilities. These might include a non-potable water source (requiring treatment by campers), a basic pit toilet, and possibly designated fire rings or areas for Leave No Trace cooking practices. The focus is on providing a backcountry experience with minimal impact on the natural environment.
The reviews offer some insights into the features of the area. The mention of the "North loop" and "South loop" of the Shawnee Backpacking Trail indicates that Camp 2 serves as an access point to a significant trail system suitable for multiple days of backpacking. The fact that one reviewer has camped there "many times over the last 50 years" speaks to the enduring quality and appeal of this location for backpackers. The statement that "The trails are clear" suggests that they are generally well-maintained for foot traffic, which is crucial for a safe and enjoyable backpacking experience.
The primary feature of Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 is undoubtedly its direct access to the Shawnee Backpacking Trail and the opportunity for multi-day backpacking trips within Shawnee State Forest. The emphasis on "solitude" suggests that this location is ideal for those seeking a more remote and less crowded camping experience, allowing for a deeper immersion in the natural surroundings. Backpacking itself is a feature, requiring participants to carry all their necessary gear and supplies, fostering a sense of self-reliance and connection with the wilderness.
For local users interested in "camping near me" that involves backpacking, Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 provides a gateway to exploring the extensive trails of Shawnee State Forest. The positive reviews from experienced backpackers highlight the natural beauty and the well-maintained nature of the trails. However, potential visitors should be prepared for a more primitive camping experience with minimal amenities, consistent with the needs of backpackers who carry their own supplies. It is essential for backpackers to be self-sufficient, knowledgeable about Leave No Trace principles, and prepared for backcountry conditions, including carrying water purification methods and appropriate gear for the weather and terrain.
Given the nature of a backpacking camp, promotional information in the traditional sense (like discounts or special offers for amenities) is unlikely to be relevant. The primary draw is the access to the natural environment and the backpacking trails. For local users considering a trip to Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2, it would be beneficial to obtain detailed maps of the Shawnee Backpacking Trail, understand the regulations and guidelines for camping in Shawnee State Forest (including any permit requirements or fees), and be well-prepared for a backcountry experience. Information about water sources along the trail and at Camp 2, as well as any specific rules regarding campfires or waste disposal, would be crucial for responsible backpacking.
The longevity of one reviewer's patronage, spanning 50 years, speaks volumes about the consistent quality of the backpacking experience offered by this location. For those seeking an authentic and solitary backpacking adventure in a naturally beautiful setting, Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 appears to be a highly regarded choice within Shawnee State Forest. Local residents looking to explore the wilderness on foot will find this camp to be a valuable starting point for their multi-day journeys.
In summary, Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 near West Portsmouth, OH, is a dedicated basecamp for backpackers looking to explore the Shawnee Backpacking Trail within the scenic Shawnee State Forest. Praised for its naturally beautiful and clear trails, as well as the solitude it offers, this camp provides a primitive camping experience for self-sufficient backpackers. Shawnee Backpacking Camp 2 Reviews
Camp 2 has always been a favorite of mine. I have camped there many times over the last 50 years. The North loop of the Shawnee Backpacking packing trail was built before the South loop. So I spent a lot of time at both Camp 1 and Camp 2.
