Collinwood Regional Park & Campground Introduce
For local users in Minnesota and those searching within the "camping near me" category, Collinwood Regional Park & Campground, located at 17251 70th St SW, Cokato, MN 55321, USA, offers a park-like setting with a variety of recreational opportunities and camping options. Based on customer reviews, the park boasts extensive trails for walking and hiking, nice playground and picnic facilities, and a mix of campsite types to accommodate different camping preferences.
The environment of Collinwood Regional Park & Campground is characterized by its natural landscapes and recreational amenities. The reviews highlight "miles of walking/hiking to be had," indicating a significant network of trails for outdoor exploration. However, it's important to note that the trails can become "extremely muddy" after recent moisture, with clay being prevalent in the soil. Therefore, visitors should come prepared with appropriate footwear. The presence of a lake within the park is also mentioned, although there are cautions regarding its suitability for swimming, particularly later in the season due to potential algae blooms. Despite this, the lake likely contributes to the scenic beauty of the park and may offer other non-swimming related enjoyment. The campground also features a playground and picnic facilities, making it a potentially attractive destination for families and those looking to enjoy outdoor meals.
In terms of services and features, Collinwood Regional Park & Campground provides a range of options for campers:
- Campsite Variety: The campground offers two distinct types of campsites. Numbered sites are located among trees, providing shade and a more traditional camping feel. However, these sites are noted as "questionable for larger units," suggesting they might be smaller or have tighter maneuvering space. In contrast, the alphabet-designated sites are described as "great for large units," indicating they are more spacious and potentially pull-through for easier access. However, these alphabet sites lack trees, offering less shade. This variety allows campers to choose based on the size of their equipment and their preference for shade versus ease of access.
- Bathroom Facilities: The campground provides bathroom facilities for guests. A specific point mentioned in a review is that the hot water in the bathroom is "like warm," which might be a consideration for some visitors.
- Playground and Picnic Facilities: The presence of a "nice playground" and picnic areas makes the campground appealing for families with children and those wanting to enjoy outdoor meals in a designated space.
- Hiking Trails: The "miles of walking/hiking to be had" are a significant feature for those who enjoy exploring nature on foot. Visitors should be prepared for potentially muddy conditions on the trails, especially after rain.
A notable feature of Collinwood Regional Park is its focus on outdoor recreation beyond just camping. The extensive trail system caters to hikers and nature enthusiasts. The playground provides a dedicated space for children to play, and the picnic facilities offer a convenient way to enjoy meals outdoors. The different types of campsites ensure that both RV and tent campers can find suitable accommodations, although those with larger RVs might prefer the alphabet sites, while those seeking shade might opt for the numbered sites (if their unit fits).
The reviews also provide important considerations for potential visitors:
- Lake Water Quality: A significant concern raised is the water quality of the lake. One reviewer explicitly advises against swimming due to "algae bloom on/in your skin" late in the season, describing it with strong negative imagery. While the water quality earlier in the season is not specified, this caution suggests that swimming in the lake might not be a primary attraction of the campground, especially as the summer progresses.
- Muddy Trails: The clay-based trails become "extremely muddy" after rain, so appropriate footwear is essential for those planning to hike.
- Limited Shade on Alphabet Sites: While great for large RVs, the alphabet sites offer no tree cover, which could be a factor during hot summer days.
- Potentially Smaller Numbered Sites: Tent campers and those with smaller RVs might appreciate the trees at the numbered sites, but larger RV owners should verify site suitability.
- Lukewarm Bathroom Hot Water: The issue with the hot water in the bathrooms might be a minor inconvenience for some guests.

Overall, Collinwood Regional Park & Campground provides a range of outdoor recreational opportunities and camping options for those searching for "camping near me" in the Cokato area.

Collinwood Regional Park & Campground Reviews
Miles of walking/hiking to be had.If there's been any recent moisture, wear shoes you don't mind getting *extremely* muddy. (Lots of clay on most of the trails.Nice playground/picnic facilities, but don't swim in the lake unless you like algae bloom on/in your skin. 🧟♂️🤢
Mar 04, 2025 · Nate Wilson (Organic Squirrel)Numbered sites are tree's, but questionable for larger units, there are a few pull through sites. Alphabet sites are great for large units, but no trees. Bathroom hot water is like warm. Lake is green late in the season and I would not swim in it. Not sure the lake quality earlier.
Oct 05, 2024 · Kent GehrkeGreat, well kept campground. We stayed in the upper part, sites 36-38 for our group, and they are all pull through. All the roads are paved and the sites have a nice gravel area for a floor mat and chairs. Fire pits we large with plenty of space to sit around. Lots of space on the sites and the center by sites 36 & 38 had a little sandbox for the kids to play.Nice and clean bathrooms but only one shower stall for each men and women. The shower stall was very large with plenty of space for towel and toiletries. The lower portion is newer and has no shade, but is close to the park and beach. The beach is a huge sandy area with a large space to swim. The playground is huge with lots of slides and things to climb. The kids wanted to stay at the playground all day.We also checked out the Wright County trail system that begins and ends at the park. If you weave all though the woods it is about 3.5 miles. We took the outer ring of the trails and ended up about 2.5 miles. Nicely groomed trails but there were some steep hills and uneven terrain. Really nice views though-out and would love to come back in the fall.

Aug 27, 2024 · Kent ZimmermanI rent out the pavilion every year for my son's birthday! It's a perfect place! Nice pavilion... Decent price.... Playground... Sandy Beach... It's perfect! Everyone enjoys it! Minus the mini biff. If it had a solid restroom with running water it would get 5 ⭐'s
