We visited the Condon Lakes West Campground in late June 2020. Its six campsites are situated on the west side of Condon Lake. It's located off of Algers Road/Forest Road 5536 via a very sandy non-paved road. The sites themselves are within eye-site of each other and do not offer much privacy. When we arrived, all six campsites were filled. There is also a boat launch located right as your enter the campground. It seemed like a peaceful site, except for the random gun shots we heard.Condon Lakes West Campground is a USFS site and thus has no camping fees. - Kevin L

Condon Lakes West Introduce

If you are searching for "camping near me" in the Bitely, Michigan area, Condon Lakes West Campground, located off Algers Road/Forest Road 5536, presents a unique situation. As a United States Forest Service (USFS) site, it offers the significant advantage of being free of camping fees. However, recent reviews from visitors paint a picture of a campground with both environmental limitations and potential issues with fellow campers, which prospective visitors should carefully consider.

The environment of Condon Lakes West Campground is defined by its location on the west side of Condon Lake. Access to the campground is via a very sandy, non-paved road off Algers Road/Forest Road 5536, which might pose a challenge for some vehicles or trailers. The campground itself is relatively small, featuring either six or five campsites according to the two reviews provided. These sites are situated within eyesight of each other, indicating a lack of significant privacy between camping parties. Despite its lakeside location, the tranquility of the site can be disrupted by external factors, as one reviewer noted hearing "random gun shots."

In terms of services and features, Condon Lakes West Campground offers very basic amenities, consistent with a free USFS site. Visitors can expect picnic tables and fire rings at each campsite. One review mentions the presence of a vault toilet, which serves as the only restroom facility, as there are no showers or flush toilets available. A boat launch is located right at the entrance of the campground, providing convenient access to Condon Lake for those with boats. However, a crucial limitation is the lack of a potable water source within the campground, with the only water available being the lake itself.

A significant concern raised in one of the reviews pertains to the condition of Condon Lake. It is noted that the lake is "dyed blue to prevent algae blooms and weeds." While this measure might address these specific issues, it raises questions about the natural state of the lake and its suitability for activities beyond boating, given the artificial coloration. The other review does not comment on the lake's color but does mention the presence of a boat launch, implying lake access for boating is available.

The most significant issues highlighted in the reviews relate to the behavior of other campers and the overall atmosphere of the campground. One reviewer who backpacked into the site from Nichols Lake described an overwhelmingly negative experience due to the rudeness and inconsiderate behavior of other campers. This included loud partying until the early hours of the morning, constant marijuana smoking, and excessive noise late at night. The reviewer also noted that at least two sites appeared to be occupied by individuals seemingly living there, exhibiting territorial behavior such as installing trail cameras and bright lights around their campsite. This created a sense of unease and a feeling that something "sketchy" was occurring.

The same reviewer expressed the opinion that the lack of camping fees might be attracting a disruptive element, referring to them as "the trashiest of trashy." They recounted being unable to sleep due to the noise and inconsiderate actions of other campers. This severely impacted their experience as exhausted hikers seeking rest. The reviewer strongly advised backpackers on the North Country Trail or those planning to tent camp to avoid Condon Lakes West Campground under the current conditions, hoping that the NFS would implement a proposed $15 fee and increase ranger presence to address these issues and enforce the 14-day camping limit.

Considering the category "camping near me," Condon Lakes West Campground presents a stark contrast to many other options. While the allure of free camping might be strong, the potential drawbacks, including the lack of privacy, the absence of showers and potable water, the potentially compromised state of the lake, and, most significantly, the risk of encountering rude and disruptive fellow campers, must be carefully weighed. For those accustomed to more managed campgrounds with established rules and regular oversight, Condon Lakes West Campground might prove to be a disappointing and even unpleasant experience.

In terms of promotional information, there is virtually none to be gleaned from the recent reviews. Instead, the feedback serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the potential downsides of an unmanaged, free camping area. The fact that the NFS is considering implementing a fee suggests an acknowledgment of the issues and a potential move towards better management and regulation of the site in the future.

In conclusion, while Condon Lakes West Campground offers the undeniable benefit of free camping on the shores of Condon Lake near Bitely, Michigan, potential visitors must be aware of the significant drawbacks reported by recent users. These include limited privacy between the small number of campsites, the absence of showers and potable water (relying solely on the potentially treated lake), and, most concerningly, the risk of encountering inconsiderate and disruptive campers leading to an unpleasant and sleepless experience. The sandy access road might also be a minor inconvenience. For those seeking a more reliable and peaceful "camping near me" experience with basic amenities and a sense of security and respect among campers, exploring other paid campgrounds in the area might be a more prudent choice until the US Forest Service addresses the issues raised in the reviews and potentially implements the proposed fee and increased ranger oversight. Contacting the US Forest Service or checking for recent updates on the campground's status and any implemented changes before planning a visit is highly recommended.
