Crab Orchard Campground Introduce
Looking for a campground with scenic beauty and lakeside access in your local area? Crab Orchard Campground, located at Campground Dr, Carbondale, IL 62901, USA, offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature within the "camping near me" category. Situated in a beautiful area, this campground boasts great views and is reportedly an excellent spot for bird watching, with many different species to observe. For those who enjoy angling, there are indications that the fishing opportunities on Crab Orchard Lake are also noteworthy.
One of the frequently mentioned positives in customer reviews is the stunning natural environment surrounding the campground. Guests have consistently praised the beautiful views, particularly those overlooking the lake. This picturesque setting provides a tranquil backdrop for your camping experience, allowing you to relax and connect with nature. The abundance of birdlife adds another layer of appeal for nature enthusiasts, offering opportunities for observation and photography.
In terms of cleanliness, the grounds are generally well-maintained, as noted by a recent visitor. However, one specific concern was raised regarding discarded black rubber gloves found in the ditches along the path while walking a dog. While this appears to be an isolated incident reported by one guest, it is worth noting as it impacts the overall impression of the campground's upkeep. It suggests that while the main areas are clean, there might be room for improvement in maintaining the peripheral areas.
The experience with the campground staff appears to be a point of contention based on the available reviews. One guest reported an unhelpful and unengaging interaction when inquiring about camping information. Instead of receiving direct assistance, they were directed to a bulletin board and instructed to take pictures of the map and first-come, first-served sites. This lack of personalized service and guidance could be a drawback for visitors seeking assistance upon arrival.
Furthermore, the same guest recounted an incident where they informed the staff about a nearby tent that was being blown away by the wind while the occupants were away. Despite having the campers' phone number from check-in, the staff reportedly did not contact them, leading to a delay in the tent owners being alerted. This raises concerns about the responsiveness and proactiveness of the staff in ensuring the well-being of their guests and their belongings.
For RV campers, it's important to note that one visitor staying at site A11 described the gravel parking as not level. Additionally, they reported receiving "minor unnecessary trouble from staff about the way I parked." This suggests that RVers might encounter challenges with site leveling and potentially face scrutiny regarding their parking arrangements. It would be advisable for RV owners to inquire about the levelness of specific sites when making reservations.
Lake access from at least one site (A11) was described as rocky. This is important information for campers planning to access the lake directly from their site, as it might pose challenges for swimming, launching small watercraft, or simply enjoying the shoreline. Depending on your intended lake activities, you might want to inquire about the accessibility of the lake from different campsites.
Despite the reported issues with staff interactions and site conditions, one positive review highlighted a "beautiful view of the lake" and a "very quiet campground." The cleanliness of the restrooms was also specifically praised. This suggests that while there are areas for improvement, the fundamental aspects of a peaceful and scenic camping experience are still present at Crab Orchard Campground.
The mention of a YouTube channel, "SIMPLE LIFE BIG ADVENTURES," indicates that some visitors have had positive enough experiences to want to share their adventures. While this is not direct feedback on the campground itself, it implies that the area offers opportunities for memorable experiences that some campers are eager to document and share.
To gather more specific information or to make reservations, you can contact Crab Orchard Campground directly at (618) 922-4075 or their mobile number +1 618-922-4075. When calling, it would be prudent to inquire about site leveling for RVs, lake access from specific sites, and any current guidelines or procedures for check-in and assistance. Given the mixed reviews regarding staff interactions, it might be beneficial to be prepared with specific questions to ensure you receive the information you need.
In conclusion, Crab Orchard Campground offers a compelling option for those seeking a "camping near me" experience with beautiful lake views and opportunities for bird watching and fishing. The generally clean grounds and quiet atmosphere are also positive aspects. However, potential visitors should be aware of the reported issues regarding staff friendliness and helpfulness, as well as the possibility of unlevel RV parking and rocky lake access from some sites. Weighing these pros and cons will help you determine if Crab Orchard Campground is the right fit for your local camping needs.

Crab Orchard Campground Reviews
Beautiful area with great views, great bird sightings many different species. Seemed to be great fishing. Grounds clean except ditches along the path where i found several discarded black rubber gloves while walking my dog. Staff not friendly or engaging or informative when asking about camping. I was pointed to a bulletin style wall and told to take pictures of the map and which sites were First come first serve. A nearby tenting family was away from their site when the winds picked up started to blow the tent away. So I, knowing they require phone number at check-in, informed at the staff and asked them to call and let them know. They said they would. They showed up and had never gotteb the call. I stayed in site A11. Not level gravel parking for RV, was given minor unnecessary trouble from staff about the way I parked. Lake access from site is rocky. Would camp again if not for the very unprofessional and mostly unpleasant staff interactions.
Apr 18, 2025 · Jay ClemWe loved our stay at this campground. We had a beautiful view of the lake. It was a very quiet campground. The restrooms were very clean. We wish we could have stayed longer. To see our adventures subscribe to SIMPLE LIFE BIG ADVENTURES on YouTube.
Oct 28, 2023 · Scotty TuckerWe just got here to the campground....All we can say is we are quite impressed! The office people are soooo friendly and go up and above to be accomadating, Prices are so cheap per night ( $25 for full hookups and $20 for water and electric sites). Our site is so spacious which is great and the VIEWS from our RV are panoramic and Amazing of the beautiful lake!! It is so quiet here, which is so refreshing! You can hear traffic noise very lightly in the distance. Towns are close by in case you need to grab anything. Facilities are nice too. Only downfall that we see so far is they don't have Laundry here, so we will have to go yo town to do that. All in all we think it's going you be a great stay!!!
Oct 18, 2022 · Beth SimondetWe wanted a nice view of the lake... Then some shonzola decides to park their car half way in the grass and halfway in the gravel road.. Right behind our rig... In our spot..We just can't seem to find a nice scenic spot without some snot deciding its OK to park their car behind our camper...Then you have people driving by, looking at me like its MY CAR, that's halfway in the roadway... Arrgh... And then I wondered... Why do they have you pay for a whole day camping fee, when you can't check-in till 5pm? That's the latest checkin time of all the camping I've ever been to.
Jun 14, 2024 · Seesaw BabagnushWe made a stop here to see the eclipse, and it was such a nice spot for it. A very calm and quiet place.
