Giant City Class C Campground Introduce
For local users and travelers searching for "camping near me" in the vicinity of Makanda, Illinois, Giant City Class C Campground, located in Makanda, IL 62958, USA, presents a camping option within the renowned Giant City State Park area. While specific details about the campground's environment, services, and features are not extensively available online, some recent customer reviews offer insights into the potential experience for those considering a stay here.
One review expresses significant concerns regarding the management and atmosphere of the parks in the area, including Giant City. This feedback suggests potential issues with staff interactions, alleging a "para-military" approach and a focus catering towards "wealthy retirees" with high-end RVs. The reviewer advises bringing "extra bribe money and self protection" and describes an unwelcoming environment for those seeking a peaceful retreat. This perspective is crucial for potential campers to consider, especially those prioritizing a relaxed and hassle-free "camping near me" experience.
In contrast, another review offers a more positive, albeit with a caveat, perspective. This reviewer mentions that "the bathrooms needed some major cleaning" but highlights the very affordable price of "8 dollars a night" and a simple check-in process. They also note the 14-day stay limit within a 30-day period and commend the showers as "good." Overall, this reviewer found the campground "totally worth the price" and would recommend it, suggesting that for budget-conscious campers, the affordability might outweigh some of the facility cleanliness issues.
Considering these contrasting reviews, the experience at Giant City Class C Campground appears to be somewhat mixed. For local users searching for "camping near me," the incredibly low nightly rate is a significant potential draw, especially for those on a tight budget. The simple check-in process and the availability of showers are also positive aspects mentioned by one reviewer. The 14-day stay limit every 30 days could be beneficial for those planning an extended visit to explore the Giant City State Park and surrounding areas.
However, the serious allegations in the first review regarding the staff and overall atmosphere cannot be ignored. Potential campers should be aware of these concerns, particularly if they value a welcoming and respectful environment during their "camping near me" experience. It might be prudent to seek additional, more recent reviews or information from other sources to gain a broader understanding of the current conditions at the campground.
Given that Giant City Class C Campground is located within the vicinity of Giant City State Park, campers can likely expect to be surrounded by the natural beauty that the park is known for. This includes unique sandstone formations, hiking trails, lush forests, and diverse flora and fauna. The environment would likely appeal to those who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, nature photography, and exploring geological wonders. However, the specific integration of the campground within this environment and any specific natural features or amenities within the campground itself are not detailed in the provided information.
As a "Class C Campground," this designation typically implies a certain level of basic amenities, often focusing on more rustic camping experiences. These campgrounds might offer:
- **Designated Campsites:** Areas for parking RVs or setting up tents.
- **Basic Facilities:** Potentially including vault toilets and water spigots.
- **Limited Hookups:** Class C campgrounds often have limited or no utility hookups (electricity, water, sewer) for RVs.
However, without official information from the campground itself, these are general assumptions based on the "Class C" designation and might not accurately reflect the specific amenities at Giant City Class C Campground. The mention of showers in one of the reviews suggests at least one significant amenity beyond the very basic.
For local users considering Giant City Class C Campground for their "camping near me" needs, it is highly recommended to seek further information before making a reservation. This could involve:
- **Searching for more recent reviews:** To see if the issues raised in the negative review persist or if conditions have improved.
- **Contacting the Giant City State Park directly:** To inquire about the specific amenities and management of the Class C Campground.
- **Checking official park websites or camping reservation platforms:** For any official descriptions or information about the campground.
In conclusion, Giant City Class C Campground near Makanda, IL, presents a budget-friendly "camping near me" option, as highlighted by the very low nightly rate and the availability of showers. However, potential campers should be aware of serious concerns raised in one review regarding the campground's atmosphere and management. The campground's location within the Giant City State Park area suggests access to natural beauty and outdoor activities. Due to the contrasting feedback and limited specific information, further investigation is strongly advised for local users to determine if this campground aligns with their expectations for a "camping near me" experience.

Giant City Class C Campground Reviews
Bring extra bribe money and self protection. The parks in this area are staffed by para-military cronies and blue stalkers using whatever fun tools they like that cause physical harm to play cops & robbers like a Yellowstone toddler gang. Whether they're fake staff members or not, if you come here to actually unplug and tune out, prepare for this place to be bullied and reserved only for wealthy retirees with $200K RV homes.
Aug 05, 2024 · CristobalThe bathrooms needed some major cleaning. Other than that 8 dollars a night and checking in was the simplest thing you'll do all day. Can stat 14 days every 30 days. Showers are good. Totally worth the price would recommend it.
Aug 06, 2021 · Jonnie RingoThere are 12 tent only sites close to the parking lot. Plenty of shade. First come, first serve. 2 pit toilets and a water spigot (year round) in close proximity to the sites. The rate is $8 (class C) or $6 (class D) when they close the shower house (winter months). Sites are located a few minute walk from the River to River Trail.
Dec 27, 2023 · Thomas CarlsonCampground is confusing to drive through and poorly labeled where you can tent camp and rv camp. Rv camp had a couple that put a dog outside their Rv at 530 am (during quiet time) and just let it bark... till noon.... sounded legitimately like they were hurting the dog and no one would do anything about it... campsite had gumball trees and the gumballs were strewn everywhere. They also decided to mow at 8 am till noon and then started cutting tree stumps out of the ground. The bathrooms were grose, even for a seasoned camper like me. The racoons were ridiculous, I counted ten juveniles that were not afraid of people or dogs.... a bad campground for peace and quiet, and just generally rude people too.... Very disappointing...
