Hilltop Campground Introduce
For local users seeking a hospitable and well-equipped campground in Southern Illinois, particularly those exploring the Shawnee National Forest or needing a convenient overnight stop along I-57, Hilltop Campground, located at 255 Baker Ln, Goreville, IL 62939, USA, presents an excellent option within the "camping near me" category. Reachable by phone at (618) 995-9130 or +1 618-995-9130, Hilltop Campground has garnered positive reviews for its personable host, clean facilities, and practical amenities, making it a recommended choice for various types of campers.
The environment surrounding Hilltop Campground offers a blend of accessibility and natural appeal. Its proximity to the Shawnee National Forest makes it an ideal basecamp for those wishing to explore the vast recreational opportunities of this scenic area, including hiking, nature viewing, and other outdoor activities. While the campground itself might not be deeply immersed within the forest, its location in Goreville provides a convenient gateway to these natural attractions. Additionally, its nearness to the I-57 freeway makes it easily accessible for travelers passing through or seeking a quick overnight stay. Despite this proximity to the interstate, one reviewer noted that they "didn't notice much noise," suggesting a reasonably peaceful environment within the campground itself.
Hilltop Campground offers a range of services and amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay for its guests. A standout feature, consistently praised in reviews, is the exceptional cleanliness of the shower house, which also boasts hot water and strong water pressure. This attention to hygiene and comfort is a significant plus for any camper. The availability of onsite laundry facilities adds another layer of convenience, particularly for longer stays. The technical aspects of the campsites are also well-regarded. Reviewers specifically mention that the sites are level and feature a gravel surface. Furthermore, full hookups are available, including 50amp and 30amp electrical connections, water, and sewer, making it well-suited for RV travelers. It appears that most, if not all, sites are pull-through, which simplifies the process of parking and departing, especially for larger vehicles.
One of the most highlighted features of Hilltop Campground is the exceptional hospitality of the host. Multiple reviewers have commented on the host's personable and accommodating nature, indicating a genuine commitment to ensuring guests have a positive experience. One particularly heartwarming example is the provision of an Easter egg hunt for the children staying at the campground, a gesture that created lasting memories and went above and beyond typical campground services. This level of personal care and attention can significantly enhance a camping trip, making guests feel welcomed and valued. The presence of a playground area and a covered pavilion further suggests that the campground is family-friendly and provides communal spaces for recreation and relaxation.
While specific promotional offers are not mentioned in the provided reviews, the positive word-of-mouth and the described amenities serve as strong endorsements. The nightly rate of $40 was mentioned by one reviewer as reasonable for an overnight stop with a 45ft Class A RV and tow vehicle, especially considering the full hookups and level sites. The fact that the campground appears to foster a welcoming atmosphere, even for short-term guests and despite having some full-time residents, adds to its appeal. The good Verizon signal reported by one user is also a practical advantage for those needing to stay connected.
It is worth noting that while the campground offers excellent facilities and a friendly atmosphere, one reviewer mentioned that shopping for groceries and finding restaurants requires a drive, as they are "miles away." This suggests that while the campground provides a comfortable and convenient base, campers should plan accordingly for their dining and supply needs, especially if they intend to stay for an extended period and rely on local amenities. However, for overnight stays or those primarily focused on exploring the Shawnee National Forest, this might be less of a concern.
In conclusion, Hilltop Campground in Goreville, IL, stands out as a welcoming and well-maintained option within the "camping near me" category. Its level, gravel, full hookup sites, clean shower house with excellent water pressure, and onsite laundry facilities cater particularly well to RV travelers. The exceptionally friendly and accommodating host elevates the experience, creating a positive and memorable stay for guests of all kinds, including families. Its proximity to the Shawnee National Forest makes it a great choice for nature enthusiasts, while its easy access to I-57 provides convenience for overnight travelers. Although grocery shopping and dining options may require a drive, the overall quality and hospitality of Hilltop Campground make it a highly recommended stop in Southern Illinois.

Hilltop Campground Reviews
We all know people with a bad experience are the first to post a review. You have to make a real impression on someone to get a 5 star review . Currently on our second night staying at Hilltop. The host has been so personable and accommodating to us and our kids, so much so they provided an Easter egg hunt for all kiddos (a first from what I hear, memories were made).Technicals :Shower house amazingly clean water was hot and a ton of water pressureOnsite laundrySite is level! Gravel, full hookups! Looks like most are pull through50amp and 30am hookup on our boxWater quality seems great.A few full timers but we definitely felt immediately accepted.Onsite playground area and covered pavilion.Definitely would recommend. We came to experience the Shawnee national forest.
Apr 19, 2025 · Preston HarrisThis is the perfect place to stay over for one night. Sites are level fairly easy to get in and out. Power water and sewer all work well. Camp host was very friendly and very helpful. The park is next to i57 freeway but we didn't notice much noise. Clean restrooms laundry not many places to shop for groceries and restaurants are miles away. But over all this is a great over night stop fir 40.00. We have a 45ft class a with tow vehicle. Verizon signal was good we would stay here again
Sep 20, 2024 · Jim KinzyGreat place. Lots are clean and level, include fire ring and nice picnic bench, owner is very friendly and accommodating. Free firewood, and great access to the natural wonders of Illinois. Bork Falls just 5 minutes away is great. 4/5 because of proximity to highway, so it is inevitably noisy, and no Wi-Fi.
May 22, 2023 · Eldar H.Great little campground right off the highway!! Stayed for one night… $35 and free firewood. Bath house was spotless and had a slight bleach smell which I liked. Ron was so accommodating and very friendly long term folks!! Would highly recommend
May 14, 2023 · Pamela TExcellent price with all of the hook ups (water, sewer, and electricity). Open year around, especially important when you can’t reserve a spot at the local state parks during off season. Best part is it’s central location to several parks and towns.
