Turkey Ridge Campground Introduce
If you're searching for "camping near me" in Southern Illinois, Turkey Ridge Campground, located in Goreville, IL 62939, USA, offers a promising option for a nature-filled getaway. Based on feedback from fellow campers, this campground, seemingly part of a larger state park (likely Ferne Clyffe), provides a beautiful environment and spacious, relatively private campsites, particularly appealing for those who enjoy a more rustic or "primitive" camping experience.
One camper who visited in March described having the "entire state park to ourselves," which speaks to the potential for a secluded and peaceful experience, especially during the off-season. The review highlights that the campsites are large and offer a good degree of privacy from one another, which is often a sought-after feature for those looking to immerse themselves in nature without feeling crowded. The overall area is noted as "quite beautiful," suggesting that the environment surrounding Turkey Ridge Campground is scenic and worth exploring.
For those planning a visit, the reviewer recommends bringing water, as the water pump closest to their location was not working. This is a practical tip for future campers to be aware of, ensuring they come prepared with their water supply. Additionally, they suggest bringing toilet paper for the outhouse, "just in case it's gone," indicating that while basic facilities are available, it's wise to be self-sufficient with essential supplies. The reviewer also mentioned bringing their own firewood and was unsure if it was sold nearby, so it might be prudent to inquire about firewood availability when contacting the campground.
Despite these minor considerations, the overall recommendation from this camper is strong: "I would highly recommend this campsite! I was a bit dubious at first, but it's quite a beautiful place once you see it!" This positive endorsement suggests that the natural beauty and the quality of the campsites outweigh any potential inconveniences.
Another camper, who has been camping in Southern Illinois every October with their son, mentioned that a friend introduced them to Ferne Clyffe eight years ago. They specifically appreciate the "Primitive" camping offered, noting that the campsites at Turkey Ridge Campground work great for both tent and hammock camping. This aligns with the previous review's description of large and somewhat private sites, ideal for a more traditional outdoor experience.
A significant feature highlighted by this repeat visitor is the abundance of hiking trails available. This makes Turkey Ridge Campground an excellent choice for those who enjoy exploring nature on foot. The mention of Ferne Clyffe suggests that the campground provides access to the natural wonders and trails of this state park, known for its unique rock formations, waterfalls, and lush greenery. If you're looking for "camping near me" that combines a natural setting with opportunities for hiking, Turkey Ridge Campground could be ideal.
In summary, Turkey Ridge Campground appears to offer:
- Large and fairly private campsites, suitable for tent and hammock camping.
- Access to a beautiful natural environment, likely within or near Ferne Clyffe State Park in Southern Illinois.
- Proximity to and access to hiking trails.
- A more "primitive" camping experience, suggesting fewer amenities directly at each site but a greater connection with nature.
Potential considerations for campers include bringing their own water and toilet paper, and possibly firewood, although it's advisable to confirm firewood availability with the campground directly. The best way for local users to get more detailed information about the specific amenities, rules, and the current status of facilities like water pumps is to contact Turkey Ridge Campground directly at the provided phone numbers: (618) 995-2411 or the mobile number +1 618-995-2411.
For those in Southern Illinois seeking "camping near me" that offers a blend of natural beauty, spacious and private primitive campsites, and access to hiking trails, Turkey Ridge Campground in Goreville is a compelling option. The positive experiences shared by other campers, particularly those who enjoy a more traditional and nature-focused camping style, suggest that this campground could be your next favorite local getaway. Don't hesitate to reach out to them to plan your visit and prepare for a beautiful camping experience.

Turkey Ridge Campground Reviews
Came here for a night camping in March. It was cold, but with warm sleeping bags and blankets we were alright. We pretty much had the entire state park to ourselves, which was awesome. The campsite is large and each site is fairly private from the others, especially with fewer people there. The area is quite beautiful. I'd recommend bringing water, since the pump closest to us didn't work, and toilet paper for the outhouse, just in case it's gone. We also brought our own firewood, so I don't know whether they sell it nearby. Overall I would highly recommend this campsite! I was a bit dubious at first, but it's quite a beautiful place once you see it! Sadly I did not take pictures of the actual campsites, only of the hiking trails.
