Three Creek Lake Campground Introduce
Welcome, local Oregon adventurers! If you're searching for "camping near me" and are located in or around the Sisters area (address: NF-16, Sisters, OR 97759, USA), Three Creek Lake Campground offers a potentially breathtaking mountain lake experience. Based on recent feedback from fellow campers, this location boasts stunning natural beauty and recreational opportunities, but it also presents some challenges that prospective visitors should be aware of.
One enthusiastic reviewer exclaimed, "This place is amazing!" and highly recommended visiting the store, praising its service as "totally phenomenal" and the staff as "rock stars!" However, it's crucial to note a significant update from a more recent review: "The store is shut down, so bring your own bait, water and pack out your trash." This indicates a change in services, and campers should not rely on the store for supplies during their visit. The earlier positive mention of the store suggests that it may have been a significant amenity in the past, offering a convenient place to purchase necessities and perhaps even enhance the overall camping experience with its exceptional service.
The centerpiece of Three Creek Lake Campground is undoubtedly the lake itself. One reviewer described it as "absolutely stunning," and another highlighted that "the fishing is great, if you know how to fish for trout." This suggests a pristine alpine lake environment perfect for scenic enjoyment and angling. The clear waters and the potential for catching trout are likely major draws for visitors. Paddling opportunities, though not explicitly mentioned, are often associated with such beautiful mountain lakes and could be another popular activity here.
However, accessing this idyllic location comes with a significant caveat: the road conditions. One camper who stayed for two weeks and also visited a campground across the lake via canoe reported that "The road to these campgrounds are suitable for anything with 4WD or dirt bikes." They further elaborated on their challenging experience with a truck camper, stating they "about rolled it through the small car sized ruts that cover this road for about 4 miles." This paints a picture of a very rough and potentially hazardous road that may not be suitable for all types of vehicles, especially those with lower clearance or without four-wheel drive. Local users considering a trip to Three Creek Lake Campground should seriously assess their vehicle's capability and their comfort level with driving on such terrain. It might be advisable to inquire about the current road conditions with the managing authority (likely the US Forest Service, using the provided phone number: (541) 383-5300 or mobile phone: +1 541-383-5300) before planning their trip.
Despite the challenging road, the camping experience itself seems to offer some desirable features. The reviewer who stayed for two weeks mentioned the presence of "designated camping areas that were numbered and had fire pits," indicating some level of established infrastructure for camping. They also noted that there was a "burn ban" in effect but that fires were permitted within these designated areas. This is important information for campers who enjoy having campfires and need to be aware of current fire restrictions.
For those interested in hiking, Three Creek Lake Campground offers access to at least one notable trail. The reviewer mentioned "a trail that goes to the Little Three Creek Lake and another smaller pond." They described this trail as "not marked and not easy to see from the road (at the camp across the lake)," suggesting it might require some effort to locate. However, they found it to be "about a mile long and well worth the trip," highlighting its secluded and "amazingly quiet" atmosphere, even though they didn't have success fishing in Little Three Creek Lake. This indicates that the area offers opportunities for exploring beyond the main lake and finding more tranquil natural spots.
The weather at Three Creek Lake Campground appears to be typical of a higher elevation mountain environment. The reviewer who stayed into September noted that it "started to frost" and was informed by a Park Ranger that "it would be winter in October till sometime around June." This suggests that the prime camping season is likely during the warmer months, and visitors during late summer or early fall should be prepared for colder temperatures, especially at night. The short window of warmer weather might make reservations during the peak season highly competitive.
Overall, the reviewer who stayed for two weeks indicated a positive experience, stating, "I would definitely come back here again in the warmer months." However, they also mentioned that they "would have given this a 5 star if the roads were better," underscoring the significant impact of the road conditions on the overall rating of the destination.
For local users searching for "camping near me," Three Creek Lake Campground presents a trade-off between stunning natural beauty and recreational opportunities (lake, fishing, hiking) and challenging access (rough road) and potentially limited amenities (store closed, requiring self-sufficiency). If you have a suitable vehicle and are prepared for a more self-reliant camping experience, the allure of the pristine lake and surrounding wilderness might make the journey worthwhile.
Before planning a trip, it is strongly recommended to contact the US Forest Service using the provided phone numbers to inquire about the current road conditions, the status of the store and other amenities, and any specific regulations or advisories for the campground. You might also want to ask about the reservation system and the best time to visit to avoid extreme weather and road closures. Given the report of a short warmer season, planning your trip within that window would be essential for the best experience.
In conclusion, Three Creek Lake Campground near Sisters offers a potentially amazing camping experience with a stunning lake, great trout fishing, and access to scenic hiking trails. However, local users searching for "camping near me" must be fully aware of the very challenging road conditions and the current closure of the store, requiring them to be self-sufficient with water, bait, and trash disposal. Checking the current status and road conditions with the managing authority is crucial before embarking on a trip to this beautiful but potentially demanding location.

Jul 10, 2024 · KimberleeWe stayed here for about 2 weeks. This camp and one across the lake that we canoed to.The road to these campgrounds are suitable for anything with 4WD or dirt bikes. It is about a mile long and we’ll worth the trip. No one we talked to, nor us, caught fish from this lake but it was most definitely secluded and amazingly quiet.I would definitely come back here again in the warmer months. Sep 20, 2022 · Dawn CraigI visited this wonderful place with two people very close to my heart, it is the most relaxing and calming place to visit. Waking up to watch the sunrise and watching baby birds from a small tree individually run quickly to have a drink from the lake and run back to their nest, and then two baby chipmunks playfully chase each other around a log. To top it off when we canoed around the lake we saw a bald eagle graciously perched on top of a large tree, it was most certainly a beautiful and mindfulness moment. If you love camping, you will love Three Creek Lake.
Jan 01, 2022 · Michelle BrinsonThis is a gorgeous campground is you don't mind off grid. The road is wash board for about 2 miles before the campground. The sites are spacious and the lake is pristine. You can sit and enjoy the view while listening to the waterfall behind you. They also kept the restrooms stocked and clean (vault toilets).
Sep 22, 2024 · Barb BallThe small lake has a nice day use area, it's a sandy beach. People like to bring kayaks and canoes to either fish or just have fun in the sun. The temperature there is at least 10 degrees cooler than Bend!! Outside of sisters, about 19 miles 2 of the miles is a bumpy road, but not to bad. There is a small store, spendy, but if your desperate. Chips, candy, pop, beer, t-shirts and sweatshirts. We had fun!! And caught 2 fish.
