South Campground

Mud Lake Rd, Oregon 97703, USA

4.0
Nice campground. Both back-in and pull-through sites. All dirt roads and sites. Good space and lots of trees between sites for both RVs and tenters. Non-flush toilets are spaced around camp and are pretty clean but smell, of course. Few sites have views of the lake but that's what the boat launch is for. Bring your SUP, kayak, canoe, rowboat, or electric boat for the best views of the lake. The fish are huge but catch-and-release only. Osprey, eagles, river otter, ducks, and lots of other birds. - Erin K. O'Connell

South Campground Introduce

For local users in Oregon searching for "camping near me" near the 97703 area, South Campground, located on Mud Lake Rd, Oregon 97703, USA, offers a lakeside camping experience with spacious, wooded sites suitable for both RVs and tents. While the campground provides a beautiful natural setting and access to a lake with abundant wildlife, prospective visitors should be aware of certain limitations and potential conditions, as indicated by recent customer reviews.

The environment of South Campground is generally described as "nice," characterized by "good space" between campsites and "lots of trees" providing shade and separation for both RV and tent campers. The roads and campsites within the campground are all "dirt," which contributes to a more rustic and natural feel. While "few sites have views of the lake," the campground does offer a "boat launch" providing easy access for those wishing to enjoy the water. The lake itself is a significant environmental feature, home to "huge" fish (catch-and-release only) and a variety of wildlife, including "osprey, eagles, river otter, ducks, and lots of other birds," making it an excellent location for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers. However, it's important to note that "no water available at lake or at either campground," meaning campers must bring their own supply. Additionally, the campsites are described as "uneven," which may require some effort for leveling RVs or finding suitable spots for tents. The area is also subject to seasonal conditions, with "June-July mosquito season in the Cascades," necessitating appropriate insect repellent and protective measures during this time.

The services and features of South Campground are somewhat basic, focusing on providing essential facilities in a natural setting. The campground offers both "back-in and pull-through sites," catering to different types of RVs and trailers. Non-flush toilets ("vault toilets") are "spaced around camp" and are reported to be "pretty clean" although they do have a noticeable odor, which is typical for this type of facility. The availability of a "boat launch" is a key feature for those wanting to access the lake with their own watercraft. The catch-and-release fishing policy helps to preserve the large fish population in the lake. The campground is also conducive to various water activities, with reviewers recommending bringing "your SUP, kayak, canoe, rowboat, or electric boat for the best views of the lake." The abundance of wildlife provides opportunities for nature observation and photography. However, the significant limitation is the complete lack of available water at both the lake and within the campground itself, requiring visitors to be entirely self-sufficient in their water supply. The unevenness of the campsites is another factor to consider when choosing a site and setting up camp.

The features of South Campground are its spacious and wooded campsites, its access to a lake teeming with wildlife and opportunities for boating, and its relatively clean non-flush toilet facilities. The availability of both back-in and pull-through sites is convenient for RVers. The catch-and-release fishing policy is a notable feature for anglers who enjoy the sport while preserving the fish population. The lake's suitability for various non-motorized watercraft allows for peaceful exploration and enjoyment of the scenery and wildlife. The presence of diverse birdlife and other animals makes it a great destination for nature lovers. However, the critical feature to be aware of is the complete absence of potable water, requiring campers to bring all the water they will need. Additionally, the unevenness of the campsites may pose a challenge for some. The extreme crowding on weekends from June to October, and sometimes on weekdays due to tour groups, is another significant factor to consider when planning a visit, as it may impact the overall peace and quiet of the campground.

For local users searching for "camping near me" in Oregon near the 97703 area who appreciate spacious, wooded campsites and access to a lake for boating and wildlife viewing, South Campground offers an appealing option. However, the complete lack of water availability is a crucial consideration that requires careful planning. Campers must bring an adequate supply of water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. The unevenness of the campsites should also be taken into account when selecting a site and setting up camp. Additionally, those seeking a quiet and secluded experience should be aware of the extreme crowding on weekends during the summer and early fall, and occasional weekday crowding. If you are prepared for these conditions and prioritize a natural setting with lake access and wildlife viewing, South Campground could be a worthwhile "camping near me" destination. Remember to bring your own water and be prepared for potential crowds and mosquitoes during the peak season.

If you are a local resident of Oregon looking for a "camping near me" experience near the 97703 zip code with a focus on lakeside recreation and wildlife observation, South Campground offers a natural setting with spacious, wooded sites. Be sure to come fully prepared with your own water supply, as none is available at the campground or the lake. Also, be aware that campsites may be uneven, and the campground can become extremely crowded on weekends from June through October, with occasional weekday crowding as well. If you plan to visit during June or July, pack insect repellent to deal with mosquitoes. Despite these considerations, the beauty of the lake, the abundant wildlife, and the spacious campsites may make South Campground a suitable choice for your "camping near me" adventure, provided you are well-prepared for the conditions. For reservations, you can use the provided phone number (877) 444-6777 or +1 877-444-6777, which is often the central reservation system for federal campgrounds.
