Lava Lake Campground

Bend, OR 97701, USA

4.0
This campground made for one of the best all-around family camping experiences we've had, and after traveling for 15 months in a travel trailer, that's saying something! The lake makes it so special, whether swimming or paddling or hiking along the shore, you can while away the time with ease. The distant mountain views are superb. Some have said the mosquitos can get pretty bad but they weren't a problem for us. We didn't use the bathrooms much, they were pretty standard for a national forest campground, we used our camper bathroom and paid for the dump station across the road at the private campground. - Andy McIntyre

Lava Lake Campground Introduce

For those seeking a picturesque "camping near me" experience in the Bend, Oregon area, Lava Lake Campground, located in Bend, OR 97701, USA, offers a compelling destination renowned for its stunning lake and mountain views and a plethora of outdoor recreational activities. Situated in a natural forest setting, Lava Lake Campground provides opportunities for swimming, paddling, hiking along the shore, and fishing in the abundant waters of Lava Lake. However, recent customer reviews also highlight some factors that prospective campers should be aware of, including potential issues with mosquitoes and the nature of the restroom facilities.

One enthusiastic review recounts a truly exceptional family camping experience at Lava Lake Campground, stating that it was "one of the best all-around family camping experiences we've had," a significant compliment from a family who had been traveling for 15 months in a travel trailer. The reviewer emphasizes the special nature of the lake, offering easy ways to spend time whether swimming, paddling, or hiking along the shore. The distant mountain views are described as "superb." While acknowledging that some have mentioned significant mosquito problems, this particular reviewer noted that mosquitoes were not an issue during their stay. Regarding facilities, they found the bathrooms to be "pretty standard for a national forest campground" and primarily used their camper bathroom, opting to pay for the dump station at a private campground across the road.

Another review echoes the sentiment of the campground's beauty and the "absolutely gorgeous" lake with abundant fish. The amenities are described as "all right," with specific details provided about some of them. Shower tokens are available for $1.50 per three minutes. The toilets are described as "tall plastic seats over holes in the ground" but are noted to be "kept well clean," although they are also described as quite smelly. The reviewer humorously advises against bringing a phone into the bathroom due to the risk of losing it. A convenience store on-site is highlighted for its wide range of offerings, from beer and marshmallows to board games and towels, though the reviewer noted that some prices, like $8.50 for a bottle of bug spray that lasted only a day, seemed "a little wonky." The trail around the lake is praised as "clean and lovely." However, this reviewer had a significantly different experience with mosquitoes, describing them as "ruthless" and reporting being bitten multiple times very quickly despite using bug spray and a head net. This issue led to them cutting their trip short by a day. They also noted that their dog was even more affected by the mosquitoes. Furthermore, this reviewer reported issues with "drunken unruly camping neighbors" who were loud late into the night, and they found the camp host "useless" in addressing the situation, requiring them to confront the neighbors themselves. They also humorously warned about bees for those with allergies. Finally, they strongly urged the enforcement of the dog leash rule, recounting multiple encounters with unleashed and aggressive dogs approaching their leashed dog, making them feel the need to keep their dog inside the tent for safety. Despite these negative aspects, the reviewer concluded that "all in all, it wasnt a bad trip," primarily due to the beauty of the lake and surrounding area.

The environment of Lava Lake Campground is clearly its primary draw, featuring a stunning lake surrounded by natural forest and offering superb distant mountain views. The lake itself provides opportunities for various water activities. The presence of trails around the lake suggests hiking and nature walks are popular. The varying experiences with mosquitoes indicate that this can be a significant environmental factor to consider, potentially depending on the time of year and specific weather conditions. The surrounding forest likely provides shade and a natural camping ambiance.

The services and features of Lava Lake Campground include standard national forest campground amenities. Restrooms are available, described as vault toilets that are cleaned but can be smelly. Showers are available for a fee, requiring the purchase of tokens. A convenience store on-site offers a variety of goods, though prices may be higher than in town. A dump station is located across the road at a private campground for a fee. The presence of a camp host is mentioned, although one reviewer found them unhelpful in addressing noise issues. Trails around the lake are maintained for hiking. Fishing is a popular activity due to the abundance of fish in Lava Lake. The campground appears to be pet-friendly, although the importance of adhering to leash rules is emphasized.

Promotional information is not provided in the reviews. To inquire about any seasonal discounts, special offers, or specific services available at Lava Lake Campground, contacting the National Forest Service or the campground directly would be necessary.
