Dekkas Rock Group Campground, situated on Gilman Rd, Lakehead, CA 96051, provides an ideal base for day walks, day fishing, and overnight camping near the renowned Shasta Lake. Based on recent customer reviews, this campground is particularly appealing for its tranquility and access to the lake for fishing, although the experience can be significantly influenced by the water levels of Shasta Lake.
Versatile Recreation: Day Walks, Fishing, and Overnight Camping:
Dekkas Rock Group Campground is highlighted as a "Great place for day walks, day fishing, and overnight camping." This versatility makes it an attractive destination for a variety of outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're looking to explore the surrounding trails with scenic day hikes, spend a relaxing day fishing on Shasta Lake, or set up camp for an overnight stay under the stars, Dekkas Rock Group Campground serves as a convenient and well-located base for these activities.
Secluded and Tranquil Environment:
One of the key benefits mentioned by visitors is the "Nice and secluded" atmosphere of Dekkas Rock Group Campground. This sense of seclusion offers a peaceful escape from more crowded camping areas, allowing campers to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings and enjoy a greater sense of privacy. For those seeking a tranquil retreat where they can unwind and connect with nature, the secluded environment of Dekkas Rock Group Campground is a significant draw.
Prime Location for Shasta Lake Fishing:
Shasta Lake is widely recognized as an excellent fishing destination, and Dekkas Rock Group Campground benefits from its proximity to this abundant water body. One reviewer enthusiastically states, "Can't beat Shasta lake for fishing!" This suggests that anglers choosing to camp at Dekkas Rock Group Campground will have convenient access to prime fishing spots and the opportunity to catch a variety of fish species that inhabit Shasta Lake.
Crucial Consideration: Shasta Lake Water Levels:
A critical factor that significantly impacts the experience at Dekkas Rock Group Campground is the water level of Shasta Lake. As one reviewer advises, "Check local water levels before going, Shasta lake can get very low. This makes getting to the water a bit of a hike." This highlights the importance of planning ahead and being aware of the lake's current conditions. Low water levels can extend the distance to the shoreline, potentially making access for fishing, swimming, or launching boats more challenging. Conversely, another reviewer notes, "Best when lake is full!" indicating that the overall experience, including lake access and aesthetics, is optimal when the water levels are high.
Implications of Water Levels for Activities:
The fluctuating water levels of Shasta Lake can affect various activities for campers at Dekkas Rock Group Campground:
- Fishing Access: Low water levels might require a longer trek to reach the water's edge or preferred fishing spots. When the lake is full, access is likely much easier and more direct.
- Boating and Water Activities: Launching boats may be difficult or impossible during low water levels. Full lake levels provide optimal conditions for boating, kayaking, and other water-based recreation.
- Lakeside Relaxation: The scenery and accessibility for simply enjoying the lake's edge are also influenced by water levels. A full lake typically offers more picturesque shorelines and easier access for relaxation.
- Hiking Trails: Water levels might also impact the accessibility or length of certain lakeside trails.
Therefore, it is strongly recommended that potential visitors check the current and projected water levels of Shasta Lake through official sources before planning their trip to Dekkas Rock Group Campground.

Dec 27, 2021 · Chris HansonNice and secluded! Best when lake is full! Can't beat Shasta lake for fishing!
Aug 11, 2017 · Matt C in ReddingPerfectly tucked away from everyone. Great family experience. A little smokey from neighboring fires but overall not too bad. Not too hot with a nice breeze during the day & not too chilly at night. The kids had a blast running around and we didn't have to be concerned with bothering other campers which made it even better for them. The restrooms were clean for being in the middle of the Forrest. Bear proof trash cans & bears lockers made it interesting. No bear sights though 😕 but the bees were a little overwhelming. Know better for next time to bring the bee traps. Double sink made washing dishes a lot easier. Everyone had their own space & really enjoyed our weekend. Definitely recommend even if you're not in a large group.
Aug 23, 2021 · Heather MeninaPrivate campground that is perfect for a large group. Nice view of the lake, the campground was clean, had 2 vessel type restrooms, many nice areas for your tent or to park your trailer.. and there a few lock boxes for food.
Oct 26, 2020 · Jay CanBeautiful place to go, but I thought that the campground was lacking. Many of the camp spots were in disrepair. Certainly needs attention and better maintenance.
