Hirz Bay Campground Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" in the picturesque region of Lake Shasta, California? Consider Hirz Bay Campground, located on Hirz Bay Rd in Lakehead, CA 96051, USA. Based on customer reviews, Hirz Bay Campground offers a tranquil and well-maintained camping experience, particularly appealing to those seeking a quiet escape in a beautiful natural setting. Its proximity to Lake Shasta suggests opportunities for water-based activities and enjoying the scenic beauty of the area.
The environment of Hirz Bay Campground is consistently praised as "quiet" and "beautiful." Its location near Lake Shasta implies a setting surrounded by nature, likely with opportunities for hiking, exploring the lakeshore, and enjoying the outdoors. One reviewer specifically mentioned the ease of access, noting that it is "not too far off of I-5," making it a convenient stop for travelers as well as a destination for local campers. The weather in April, as experienced by one visitor during two separate stays, was reported as "great," suggesting that the spring season can be an ideal time to visit this campground.
In terms of services and features, the reviews provide some valuable insights. One camper who stayed at site 27, a double site, highlighted its spaciousness, equipped with "2 tables, fire pit and BBQ." The availability of these amenities at least at some sites enhances the camping experience, providing convenience for cooking and gathering. Shade is another significant feature mentioned, with site 27 offering "Shade in the camp site all day," which is highly desirable, especially during the hot California summers. It would be prudent to inquire about shade availability at other sites when making a reservation.
The bathroom facilities at Hirz Bay Campground are reported as "clean," which is a crucial aspect for any campground. Additionally, the presence of "a water spigot outside of each bathroom with potable water" is a significant convenience for campers, providing easy access to drinking water. However, it's important to note that there is "no camp host or any other staff on site," which means that certain services, such as firewood sales, are not available within the campground. Therefore, campers need to ensure they bring their own firewood and any other supplies they might need.
Despite the lack of on-site staff for sales, the reviews mention that "The staff that came through for daily maintenance was awesome and helped us find the best swimming holes." This indicates that while there isn't a constant presence, maintenance is conducted, and the staff are knowledgeable about the local area, offering valuable tips to visitors. The proximity to swimming holes suggests that Lake Shasta or nearby creeks offer opportunities for swimming and enjoying the water.
A notable feature of camping in this area, as highlighted by both reviewers, is the presence of bears. One camper reported "middle of the night visits from a bear," while another detailed how leaving food or garbage out attracted a bear that kept them awake. However, both reviewers emphasized the importance of using the "provided bear lockers" properly. As long as food and scented items are stored correctly in these lockers, the bears "just pass through," and problems can be avoided. This is a crucial piece of information for anyone considering camping at Hirz Bay: adhering to bear safety guidelines is essential for a safe and peaceful stay.
For those who enjoy camping with their pets, Hirz Bay Campground appears to be "perfect for him as well," according to one reviewer who brought their dog. This suggests that the campground is pet-friendly, although it would be wise to inquire about any specific rules or restrictions regarding pets when making a reservation.
Overall, the reviews describe Hirz Bay Campground as an "Amazing place. Quiet, beautiful, and well maintained." The combination of a serene environment, clean facilities, spacious campsites (at least site 27), and access to swimming holes makes it an attractive option for those seeking "camping near me" in the Lake Shasta area. The proximity to I-5 also adds to its convenience for travelers.

Hirz Bay Campground Reviews
We were in site 27. It is a double site and it is huge! 2 tables, fire pit and BBQ. Shade in the camp site all day. The bathrooms were clean and there was a water spigot outside of each bathroom with potable water. There is no camp host or any other staff on site so there are no fire wood sales there so grab wood before you head to camp. The staff that came through for daily maintenance was awesome and helped us find the best swimming holes. We did have middle of the night visits from a bear, but as long as you are using the bear box properly they just pass through. We had our dog with us and it was perfect for him as well. Amazing place. Quiet, beautiful, and well maintained.
Aug 03, 2024 · Christie ContrerasGreat quiet place, not too far off of I-5. I've stayed here twice, both times in April. The weather was great. Just make sure you use the provided bear lockers. The second time I stayed here, multiple camps left food or garbage out and a small black bear kept us up from about 2am to 4am. Don't be an amateur. All you have to do is read the signs that the campsite puts up.
Feb 05, 2025 · Ben Moorea fantastic and gorgeous location. really well maintained when it comes to their bathrooms (flushing & sinks) and trash cans…but holy bear.around 4am a black bear (maybe 500lbs?) came through our site and pulled on the bear box and kept it moving to check neighboring sites (which were vacant) only to come back shortly later for a few sniffs.this would’ve been less scary had we been in an RV buuuut tent camping + bear is not the vibe guys.it definitely smelled us and knew exactly where we were & we’re incredibly fortunate but of course we were terrified.i’d definitely come back with different equipment and plenty of mace and really wish there were more signs about the likelihood of bears in this area at this time. there were a handful of signs but so small and easy to get lost amid all the other super valuable information.
Jul 26, 2024 · j bNice clean bathrooms, strong bear boxes only work if you put your cooler in it! LOL Good flat areas for RV'S or tents. The campground has no control over the yellow jackets, so I recommend you bring bee traps with you. It was beautiful, quiet and rejuvenating. 10/10 will go back. Oh and does a bear poop in the woods? Yes, yes he did.
Jul 21, 2021 · Mama PinkThis was our favorite campground during our multi-state road trip. There were very few people in the campground and we felt like we had the whole lake to ourselves. The scenery was breathtaking.
