Dickie Bridge Campground

Wise River, MT 59762, USA

4.0
This is one "must do" destination, especially if you are a fisherman, to fish the Big Hole River that runs by Wisdom and Wise River, Montana. What an idyllic place. Here time runs still on crisp clear mornings, with a breeze blowing down river, through the warming day of ranchers putting up hay in big round bales or by "beaver slide" and hay stacks. The Big Hole Rivers runs through it, calling to all. Dickie Bridge Campground is located conveniently partway along the highway west of Wise River. There are 8 or so designated campsites, situated right at the Dickie Bridge. Lots of trees shade the sites and create a haven of color, shade and protection from the wind. Here anglers and raft/ kayaks can put in to float downriver. A sizable parking lot affords good parking for vehicles for those floating. This site also has an outhouse. The Pioneer Mountains to the south offers ATV exploration and tons of hiking opportunities. Further west the Pintlar Mountains rise breath takingly, seen through the horizon of the valley. Dickie Bridge Campground is a perfect resting place. We found ourselves, amazingly enough, alone in Campground for a whole day on a Friday, and sparsely filled on a Saturday. - Linda Meuret

Campers can wake up to crisp, clear mornings with the gentle sound of the river flowing by. The area evokes a sense of timelessness, with glimpses of traditional ranching practices adding to the idyllic charm. The campground itself is nestled amongst plenty of trees, offering ample shade and creating a colorful, sheltered haven from the elements. This lush environment provides a stark contrast to the open skies and distant mountain ranges, creating a visually rich and tranquil setting for a camping getaway. While the highway is nearby, reviewers note that the noise is infrequent, allowing for a generally peaceful experience immersed in nature's sounds.

Dickie Bridge Campground is characterized as a primitive campground, which means that the services and amenities are basic. It is important for local users to be aware of these limitations when planning their stay. The campground offers approximately eight designated campsites, situated right at the Dickie Bridge. Each site is equipped with a large and sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, providing essential infrastructure for outdoor living and cooking. The campground has a single outhouse facility for restroom needs. Crucially, it is noted that there is no potable water supply available at the campground. Therefore, campers must bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. Despite its primitive nature, the campground offers a significant advantage with its direct access to the Big Hole River, making it exceptionally convenient for fishing and launching rafts or kayaks. A sizable parking lot is also available, providing good parking for vehicles, especially for those using the river for float trips. The lack of extensive amenities contributes to the campground's simplicity and natural appeal, allowing visitors to focus on the surrounding environment and recreational activities.

The key features of Dickie Bridge Campground are its unparalleled access to the Big Hole River, its scenic location amidst Montana's stunning mountain ranges, and its suitability as a basecamp for exploring the wider region. For anglers, the opportunity to fish the renowned Big Hole River right from the campground is a major draw. The river is easily accessible for casting a line and enjoying some of Montana's premier fly fishing. For those interested in water sports, the campground serves as a convenient put-in point for rafting and kayaking trips down the river. The shade provided by the numerous trees offers a comfortable camping environment, especially during warmer summer months. The proximity to both the Pioneer Mountains to the south and the Pintlar Mountains to the west opens up a wealth of opportunities for outdoor exploration beyond the river. The Pioneer Mountains are noted for their ATV trails and extensive hiking opportunities, catering to those who enjoy more adventurous land-based activities. The breathtaking views of the Pintlar Mountains on the horizon further enhance the visual appeal of the campground and the surrounding valley. The fact that reviewers experienced periods of solitude at the campground, even on a Friday and Saturday, suggests that it might offer a more secluded experience compared to more developed and crowded campgrounds, particularly outside of peak season.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Dickie Bridge Campground in the provided reviews. As a primitive campground, it is likely that fees are minimal, if charged at all, but this information is not explicitly stated. Local users interested in camping here should check with the relevant land management agency (likely the Bureau of Land Management or the US Forest Service, given the proximity to national forests) for any information on permits, fees, and regulations. It would also be wise to inquire about the best times to visit for fishing or floating, as well as any safety precautions related to wildlife or river conditions. Given the limited number of campsites (around eight), it might be advisable to arrive early, especially during peak fishing season or popular weekends, to secure a spot. As there is no potable water, local users should ensure they bring an adequate supply for their entire stay and have a plan for waste disposal, adhering to Leave No Trace principles to help preserve the pristine nature of the area.

In conclusion, Dickie Bridge Campground offers local residents and visitors a fantastic "camping near me" option for experiencing the beauty and recreational opportunities of the Big Hole River valley near Wise River, Montana. Its prime location provides direct access to world-class fishing and serves as a launch point for river adventures. The surrounding landscape, with its abundant trees and stunning mountain views, creates an idyllic setting for a Montana getaway. While the campground is primitive, lacking potable water and having only an outhouse, its natural charm, riverside access, and proximity to other outdoor activities in the Pioneer and Pintlar Mountains make it a worthwhile destination for those who appreciate a more rustic and nature-focused camping experience. Local users should be prepared for the lack of amenities and come fully equipped to enjoy the simple pleasures of camping in this remarkable Montana landscape.
