Dower Lake Recreation Area Campground appears to offer a mix of positive attributes, including spacious campsites, a variety of activities, and a generally safe and enjoyable environment, although some areas, like the shower facilities, have received mixed feedback. This introduction aims to provide a detailed overview based on the available reviews to help local campers make an informed decision.
Environment and Location: The campground is situated in the vicinity of Dower Lake, suggesting a lakeside environment that likely offers scenic views and potential water-based activities such as swimming. One reviewer specifically mentions "swimming" as one of the available activities, indicating direct access to the lake for recreational purposes. The presence of a "pier" further supports the likelihood of lake access for fishing or simply enjoying the waterfront. The area seems to be generally well-maintained, with one reviewer describing it as an "awesome little campground." The campsites themselves are noted to have "level pads," which is a significant advantage for both tent and RV campers, ensuring a more comfortable and stable setup.
The campground appears to be part of a broader "park" area, as mentioned in one review, implying additional green spaces and possibly other park amenities beyond just the camping sites. The availability of space for activities like volleyball and disc golf suggests an open and recreational-oriented environment. The mention of a "nice area to walk around" indicates that the campground and its surroundings are conducive to leisurely exploration and enjoying the natural setting.
Services and Amenities: Dower Lake Recreation Area Campground offers both "rustic and electric camping alike," catering to different preferences and equipment needs. The availability of electric campsites is a significant amenity for RVers and those who prefer to have access to power. For all campers, the provision of "free firewood" is a notable perk, enhancing the camping experience by allowing for campfires without additional cost. The campground also provides "free shower rooms," although the reviews offer mixed feedback on their condition. While described as "clean" and offering "plenty of hot water (after about a minute)," the showers are also noted to be "old," smelling "like a washing machine," and having "stains on walls from years of water." Reviewers suggest that they could use an "overhaul" and improvements like new hooks or shelves.
The presence of restroom facilities is implied by the mention of showers, though specific details about the number and condition of toilets are not provided. The signage within the campground regarding shower cleanliness and vandalism, while noted as "excessive" and "concerning" by one reviewer, suggests that the management is attentive to maintaining the facilities and addressing potential misuse. Another positive aspect mentioned is the general feeling of safety within the area.
Features and Highlights: Dower Lake Recreation Area Campground boasts a variety of features and highlights that appeal to local campers. The access to Dower Lake for swimming and the presence of a pier are significant attractions for water enthusiasts. The inclusion of recreational facilities like a park, volleyball court, and disc golf course offers diverse activities for campers of all ages and interests, ensuring there are "plenty of things to do" during a stay. The availability of both rustic and electric campsites provides flexibility for different types of camping setups.
The provision of free firewood is a standout feature that adds value and convenience to the camping experience. While the shower facilities have room for improvement, the fact that they are free and offer hot water is still a benefit. The level campsite pads contribute to a more comfortable camping setup. The overall atmosphere is described as "wonderful" by one reviewer, and the area is generally perceived as safe.
The combination of natural beauty (the lake), recreational activities (swimming, park, volleyball, disc golf, pier, walking), and practical amenities (level pads, electric campsites, free firewood, free showers) makes Dower Lake Recreation Area Campground a potentially attractive option for a local getaway.
Promotional Information: While no specific promotional offers are mentioned in the reviews, the positive aspects highlighted by campers serve as implicit endorsements. The "awesome little campground" description, the enjoyment of the stay ("My son and I very much enjoyed our stay here!"), and the appreciation for the free firewood are all positive points that could attract local users. To further promote the campground, the management could focus on the range of activities available, the level campsites, and the beautiful lake setting. Addressing the concerns about the shower facilities through upgrades could also be a significant selling point.
Potential promotional angles could include: advertising the family-friendly nature of the campground with activities for all ages, highlighting the convenience of having both rustic and electric sites available, and emphasizing the value of free amenities like firewood and showers (while acknowledging the need for shower improvements). Showcasing the scenic beauty of Dower Lake and the recreational opportunities it provides would also be beneficial in attracting local campers looking for a "camping near me" experience that combines relaxation and activity.
Local residents searching for a camping destination near Staples, MN, that offers a variety of activities, level campsites, and the bonus of free firewood should consider Dower Lake Recreation Area Campground. Dower Lake Recreation Area Campground Reviews
Awesome little campground. Level pads, noise was kept to a minimum. Showers need help. They were clean, but old. Smelled like a washing machine. Stains on walls from years of water. Just needs an overhaul. The amount of "campers only" signs and "we will prosecute" notices about keeping the shower clean or vandalism was concerning. We felt safe in the area, but the signage was more than excessive.
Jul 13, 2024 · Conor TreacyThis was a wonderful place to camp! Large spots for rustic and electric camping alike. There are plenty of things to do between swimming, the park, volleyball, disc golf, the pier, and just a nice area to walk around. Free firewood, which was awesome! Free shower rooms (not the newest) with plenty of hot water (after about a minute), definitely could use new hooks to hang things on, or perhaps a shelf....but we felt safe and got clean! My son and I very much enjoyed our stay here!
Oct 05, 2023 · Kristen PiccioloBeautiful campground!! Quiet! Bathrooms are wonderful, the only issue was all the water on the floor! The campsites are big and spacious. Docks everywhere. Playground is nice. Staples is a short 6 minute drive away for anything you may have forgot or for live bait!
May 26, 2024 · Elizabeth SmithGreat spot to camp, right off the highway but peaceful.Small swimming area for the kids, playground as wellPlenty of cut wood to burn was so nice as we had a fire going all weekend
Jun 16, 2024 · Josh SmithThe place is beautiful. Enough space for rustic camping, nice beach, dog friendly. The one bad thing about this place was the unclean bathrooms and showers. I was only there for 2 days and I never saw staff clean or take the overflow garbage in the bathrooms. The showers were spacious but again dirty, but the worst thing about the showers is that there's nothing but two hooks on the door to put your towel and maybe hang your clothes in a bag. A shelf or something would be nice to put shower items. Other than that I enjoyed my stay.
