As a platform dedicated to connecting local users with diverse camping opportunities, we are pleased to introduce you to this campground, which provides specific amenities for those traveling with horses and offers access to an extensive trail system around a picturesque lake, as detailed in helpful customer reviews.
The environment of the Equestrian Campground at Lake Road is specifically designed to accommodate campers traveling with horses. The primary camping area for equestrians (Sites 63-85) offers designated places to park both campers and horse trailers, ensuring ample space for both. The presence of smaller corrals associated with some sites, which can be reserved, indicates a commitment to providing secure areas for horses. Additionally, each campsite is equipped with hitch rails, allowing for easy and safe tethering of horses. The surrounding environment features trails that encircle a lake, offering scenic routes for both horseback riding and hiking. These trails provide opportunities to experience the natural beauty of the area, with loop options ranging from approximately 4 to 6 miles. A day-use area at the front of the equestrian section offers parking spaces for those visiting just for a ride. Furthermore, the campground includes a small pavilion with picnic tables and a fire pit, providing a communal space for gatherings and enjoying the outdoors. The presence of a nearby lake suggests potential for scenic views and a generally natural and recreational environment.
The services at the Equestrian Campground are specifically geared towards facilitating camping with horses while also providing essential amenities for human comfort. For equestrian campers, the provision of reservable corrals and hitch rails at each campsite are key services, ensuring the safety and convenience of managing horses. The availability of wheelbarrow carts for cleaning up and transporting straw and manure to designated piles demonstrates a commitment to maintaining a clean environment for all campers and horses. The recent addition (as of January 2025) of six pull-through equestrian sites (#57-62) in the north campground, designed for trailers up to 32 feet, aims to improve accessibility, particularly to the shower house located in the north campground. While the availability of water and electricity at these new sites was unknown at the time of the review, a hydrant is located nearby, suggesting potential for water access. Eight of the existing equestrian sites (63-85) offer electrical hookups, while fifteen are non-electrical, providing options based on individual needs. The campground also offers restroom facilities within the equestrian area itself, with men's and women's sides in a "RR building." Additionally, during open seasons, the more comprehensive restroom and shower building in the nearby main campground is also accessible to equestrian campers. For those interested in trail conditions, a sign at the entrance to the equestrian area indicates whether the trails are open or closed due to wetness. Calling ahead to the provided phone number (712) 523-2700 to check on trail conditions is highly recommended before arrival.
The features of the Equestrian Campground are particularly attractive to those who enjoy combining camping with horseback riding or hiking. The designated equestrian camping area with parking for trailers, reservable corrals, and hitch rails is a primary feature. The extensive network of trails that loop around the lake, offering varying distances, caters to both riders and hikers. The presence of electrical hookups at some sites provides added convenience for RV campers. The recent addition of pull-through sites in the north campground enhances accessibility, especially for those with shorter trailers seeking easier access to the shower house. The small pavilion with picnic tables and a fire pit offers a communal gathering space. The availability of restroom facilities within the equestrian area and the option to use the shower building in the main campground during open seasons ensure basic comfort. The proactive communication regarding trail conditions through a sign at the entrance and the recommendation to call ahead are valuable features for planning. The park's management, as indicated by the information about reservations through the Iowa DNR website and the park manager's involvement in trail maintenance, suggests a well-maintained and organized facility. The lake itself is a significant natural feature, providing scenic backdrops for camping and trail activities.

Equestrian Campground Reviews
The equestrian campground (Sites 63-85) provides places to park your camper/horse trailers. Eight of the sites have electrical hookups, 15 sites are non-electrical. Any can be reserved through the IowaDNR website. There are a number of smaller corrals associated with some of the sites which can be reserved, as well as hitch rails for each campsite. Wheelbarrow carts are provided so you can clean up and transport the straw and manure to a nearby pile. Those coming in just for a ride, will find a number of parking spaces in the day use area which is at the front of the equestrian area. There are a number of trails available that can go completely around the lake. The shortest full loop is approximately 4 miles, while 5 to 6 mile loops are possible.Note that the availability of these trails depends on the condition due to wetness from rain. The trails had been closed at times when there are muddy areas, or areas of standing and running water on the trails due to rainfall, or snowmelt before the frost gets fully out of the ground. There is a sign at the entrance to the equestrian area which indicates if trails are open or closed. If closed, horses are limited to the hard surface roads within the park. There is also a small pavilion with picnic tables and a fire pit in this area. Also a RR building with men's and women's sides. The RR and shower building in the nearby main campground is also available during open seasons.Calling ahead to check on conditions is highly recommended before making reservations or just showing up. (712) 523-2700.January 2025 - Six additional pull through equestrian sites (# 57-62) have been added to the north campground. They are limited to 32ft or shorter trailers. These sites will give users easier access to the shower house located in the north campground. At present, whether these new sites will have water or electricity is unknown. There is a hydrant presently located about in the middle of the new sites. Plans to include building hitching posts and corrals to go with these sites.P.S. I'm a hiker now, no longer a rider. As such I try to do my part by moving branches and limbs off the trails, and reporting larger trees or limbs to the park manager. When I encounter a muddy area, I'm usually trying to skirt the mud to the drier sides of the trail. So I appreciate it when those on horseback have kept their horses off of the edges of the trails, leaving the drier area for those of us enjoying the trails on foot.
