A Natural Oasis Amidst Low Oak Trees and Live Oak Hammocks
Etoniah State Forest Campground is described as being nestled in a small grove of low oak trees, creating a pleasant and shaded camping environment. The roads leading into the campground are pleasant lime rock roads, adding to the natural and rustic charm of the location. The campground itself transitions into a pleasant live oak hammock, a distinctive Florida ecosystem characterized by its beautiful and sprawling live oak trees. This environment offers a picturesque and tranquil setting for camping, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the state forest.
Primitive Campsites with Essential Amenities
The campground features several primitive campsites, emphasizing a more back-to-nature camping experience. Despite being primitive, the campsites are well-maintained and equipped with new picnic tables, grills, and lamp poles, providing essential amenities for a comfortable stay. The presence of a nice outhouse (composting toilet) ensures basic sanitation facilities are available. It is important to note that these are primitive campsites, implying a lack of hookups for water, electricity, and sewer, which caters to those who prefer a more self-sufficient camping style.
Abundant Opportunities for Outdoor Activities
One of the significant draws of Etoniah State Forest Campground is its access to numerous options for outdoor activities. Important Considerations: Navigation, Water, and Reservations
Prospective visitors should be aware of a potential navigation issue. As of April 2023, Google Maps may not accurately guide you to the campground's exact location. However, one reviewer suggests entering the State Forest from the Holloway Rd. entrance and using common sense to find the campground, noting that the roads and campsite are well maintained. Additionally, a reviewer reported that the nonpotable water pump was not working during their visit due to a bad valve. Campers should plan accordingly and potentially bring their own water or verify the status of the water pump before their trip. Furthermore, there were reported difficulties in making reservations due to incorrect phone numbers and dead email addresses listed on the website and brochure. It is advisable to exercise patience and persistence when trying to make a reservation and to verify contact information through official channels if possible.
Tick Warning: Be Prepared During Warmer Months
A crucial piece of information for anyone planning to visit Etoniah State Forest Campground, especially during warmer months, is the presence of ticks. One reviewer explicitly warns about ticks, particularly in off-road areas. It is essential for visitors to have a plan for tick prevention, such as using insect repellent, wearing appropriate clothing (long sleeves and pants tucked into socks), and checking themselves and their gear regularly for ticks. Being prepared for ticks is vital for a safe and enjoyable experience in the state forest.
A Quiet and Relaxing Natural Retreat
The overall sentiment from the reviews indicates that Etoniah State Forest Campground offers a very pleasant, quiet, and relaxing atmosphere. The combination of the natural surroundings, the well-maintained primitive campsites, and the access to outdoor activities creates an appealing destination for those seeking a peaceful escape from the everyday. The absence of extensive amenities contributes to the tranquility and allows for a more immersive experience in nature.

Apr 16, 2023 · Wind Tree StudiosVery pleasant lime rock roads leading into pleasant live oak hammock with several primitive campsites with new picnic tables, grills and lamp poles. Nice outhouse. Only problem was the nonpotable water pump was not working when we were there, like a bad valve that wasn't allowing pumping to work. Also, it was difficult to make the reservation as the website and brochure had listed incorrect phone numbers and dead email addresses. The lime rock roads around the forest wood seem to be pleasant for light off-road gravel biking.

Please remember to do your part and pack your trash out.Entrance is from Hwy 100, there is an immediate fork after crossing the paved state bike trail, go right at the fork.
